He doesn't die on normal or any other difficulty. The people back home presume he's dead, yes, but he's still on the ship that they left off of.

I'm actually a bit uncertain of why he was left there, or what exactly happened, so I guess this doesn't help you much sry.

And in the legendary ending, you see the ship heading towards some sort of planet or something, but I don't have the time to explain all of that info atm.
