Let's face it - achievements and trophies have become a stock item in every console game's landscape. Everyone - regardless of their personal opinion on them - takes their presence for granted these days. They are nothing more than a method of keeping track of one's progress in video games yet it is difficult to suppress the sense of satisfaction when one suddenly pops on the screen. Together with controllers they are about the only objects that set console gaming apart from pc gaming. They do so in a positive way. That is why having backwards compatibility with the original XBox games on X1 is not something to be excited about, especially as those games will be coming to PC as well. It would be much better to have these titles released as digital downloads instead with added achievements and perhaps upgraded graphics, why not. As much as I don't want to give Sony credit, for they deserve little of it most of the time, I have to point at their "PS2 on PS4" effort as something Microsoft should pursue, instead of rewarding those select few who have the original XBox games in a working condition. This feels like a hasty decision that will only benefit few lucky owners of old discs instead of promoting and preserving older titles for future generations.

You do know that PC gamers use controllers for most games and that all modern PC marketplaces (steam, gog, orgin, uplay) have achievements right?

Anyway, I don't really care for achievements. They don't bother me but I don't miss them when they aren't there.

It depends. Right now my PC is better for 1080p60 due to much better processor (4790K) but much worse at 4k30 due to worse graphic card (R9 390). The Xbox One X also clearly has hardware optimizations that push it well above what should be possible for its hardware.

I'm waiting on a new gtx 1080 right now. That should give me a good edge over XOX.

If the PC didn't have a much larger library of games of the genres I like to play (like isometric RPGs) and mouse and keyboard control (can't play fps with controller), I would seriously consider going for an XOX for gaming on my 4K TV, instead of upgrading my PC.

There have been some great JRPGs lately, especially if you count the Souls games as JRPGs (although I wouldn't since the term the way is used today doesn't usually indicate country of origin but gameplay, story and aesthetic similarities).

Bloodborne is probably the best game of 2015 and Persona 5 the best in 2017 so far. Yes I thing Bloodborne is better than the Witcher 3 despite being a fan of the series (I've read all the books, played the first 2 games twice each) and I also think it's better than all the Dark Souls games.

However there has been such a huge influx of top quality western RPGs over the last few years that I can say with certainty that WRPGs are better than JRPGs now as they have always been. To be clear, I wouldn't put Skyrim or Fallout 4 in the list but games like Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, Tides of Numenera, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Tyranny, Transistor, Path of Exile, etc.

For me the most solid Trilogy is Star Wars Jedi Knight(Even Though the First Game is outdated in lightsaber combat)

Is it really a trilogy though? It comprises of 4 games total (Dark Forces, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, Jedi Knigh 2: Outcast, Jedi Knight 3: Academy) and one expansion (Jedi Knight- Mysteries of the Sith). Either way I've played all of them, in succession no less, and although Jedi Knight 2 is clearly the best, each game is great in its own right and can still be enjoyed today.

Max Payne 3 is way way worse than the first two but that's not the problem.

On it's own it's not so bad. It's practically little more than an on-rails shooter but it had great graphics, amazingly detailed locations and a very interesting setting. The shooting part wasn't bad either. A solid effort.

However, labeling Max Payne did the game a disservice because it had such a legacy to live up to. They could have just created a new character with exactly the same story and it wouldn't have to be judged so harshly.

As it stands, it's a bad story continuation, it shits all over the amazing finale of Max Payne 2 and Max bears little resemblance to the character of the first two games. Also the gameplay is extremely different and you are much more limited to the way you move about spaces. It feels much more "corridor-y".

As for 1 and 2, each is a masterpiece on its own right. I played them for the first time many many years after they were released, when they were already considered old, and I found them very fun and enjoyable and I loved the story and tone. When Max Payne 2 first came out a lot of people were disappointed that it wasn't more like 1 but I think that was for the better. Each game has its own strengths and together they make a great character arc for Max.

About being the most solid trilogy in gaming, Max Payne 3 on its own debunks that statement but even if it was a worthy continuation there are a lot of other great trilogies out there, like the Witcher games.

A lot of adventure games, especially older ones, are indeed overrated. However I wouldn't write off the genre as a whole. Developers just need to push forward, learn from the past and improve where the games of the past faltered. RPG developers seems to have embraced this and the new wave of isometric RPGs, although not always as inspired as their predecessors, have ironed out rough mechanics, making them much easier to play.

Despite all the flack it got for various reasons, I though Broken Age was very good at what it did. Most puzzles were easy enough to not mess with the pace with only the later ones ramping up the difficulty a bit. I managed to finish it without reading any short of guide, which is uncommon for me in adventure games. There are usually a puzzle or two that I can't solve on my own.

From the RPGs in your list I've played, from best to worst:

1. Bloodborne

2. Witcher 3

3. Dark Souls 3 (the worst Souls game but still very good)

4. Dragon Age: Inquisition

5. Diablo 3

And with special distinction as being the only mediocre game in a list of good and great ones:

6. Skyrim

@the_master_race Great list

I don't have time right now to watch the video but if you've played it I have a couple of questions.

First of all does the game have a map? I know it doesn't have a minimap but how about a full map from the menu? Second, does it have collectibles like the previous games? For example you have X chests and Y flags in a district to gather, or is it more dynamic? I really wish Ubisoft moves on from the collecathlon gameplay.

Last, the battle from the trailers looks a bit like Dark Souls. Is that accurate or it just looks that way?

I'm not gonna even ask about choices. I doubt it has any. Despite wanting to be more like the Witcher in a sense, it's still an Assassin's Creed game with a linear story, at least that's what I understood from the presentations.

I want more high budget JRPGs that push the envelope in terms of story and mechanics. I don't want another linear grindfest with cutesy graphics.

As an example I'll mention Resonance of Fate that we god last generation. The combat mechanics are amazingly deep and very different from anything else out there. The story feels half-told and unfinished but at least it was something different in both content and way it was told.

As for lack of linearity, that's harder to find in JRPGs but Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor does this well.

Not really, I make more than the average in my country but it's hard not to compare with people doing the same job in the UK or Germany who make a lot more, usually working under better conditions. Since I'm in EU I could just go to these countries (well UK for now, for the future we'll see) but I haven't felt confident yet to leave my home country for good. I may do so when I decide to quit my current job.
