I guess 2 years development time isn't near enough to build an engine from the ground up. But it's not like they've made spectacular titles like Valve has done with Source (Portal 2 being one example). There's no doubt to the fact that Call of Duty gameplay is solid, but this using of the same engine is going against the flow of competition. Not only did Frostbite 2 revamp the graphics of the Battlefield franchise, bringing it on par with Unreal Engine 3.5 and CryEngine 3, they also significantly improved upon sound design. Both the changes become apparent upon playing the game. Look at how the graphics of Gears of War 3 shadowed that of Gears 2 while greatly improving upon its gameplay mechanics. There's also no doubt that Blacks Ops 2 will have an intriguing tale to tell, but wouldn't it be a profitable investment both professionally and as gamers to dramatically improve the technical aspects of this juggernaut to better present its story?
