I got through 2010 without getting a moderation - kind of!

Well, this is just going to be a quick blog post, but I just realised I actually got through 2010 without receiving any legitimate moderations... sort of!

The only moderation I received last year was a minor censor bypassing issue, where I'd written b****, and at the time the first letter was not allowed to be visible. After receiving the moderation, Jody PMd me to say that the rules were being changed (which they were within just a few days) so that the first letter could be shown. So really, I don't feel like I broke the rules and I'm going to consider it as a moderation-free year.

My moderation prior to that was in September 09, so I've been doing ok. I don't generally get moderated, but I did have a care-free attitude a couple of years ago that I've grown out of.

So... yay for me I guess :P

**P.S.**

I still don't have my Reader's Choice Awards emblem, despite 100% double-checking that I had voted in every category of the award... I'm quite upset about that :(

A special date with my special girl

Okay, so my girlfriend and I have a long distance relationship. She lives in Adelaide and I live in Melbourne. That's 750km (or 460 miles) - so quite long.

Anyway, it was our 2 year anniversary a couple of weeks ago and she's coming to Melbourne on Saturday while she's on holidays from uni, so I'll get to spend more than 2 months with her which is great.

As she wasn't here when the official 2 year mark was upon us, I've taken the liberty of organisng a somewhat surprise date for when she arrives. When she gets off the plane, she'll be greeted by one of these shiny Chrysler 300c limos, with all the trimmings and a bottle of bubbly (and me of course :))

I don't believe she's ever been in a limo, so I'm hoping this will be a nice, pleasent surprise. From the airport we'll make our way back into the city to a nice 4 and a half star hotel, where I was a cheeky boy and booked one of their premier spa suites. The suite includes a room with King bed, a separate living room and a bathroom with double shower, and a corner spa IN THE BEDROOM!!! I think it sounds awesome and looks something like this:

I plan to take her to dinner as well, and a full room service breakfast is included. I'm really looking forward to Saturday and I hope this surprise only continues to sweep her off her feet

I'll post an updated blog post-date with some awesome photos of us in the limo!

Melbourne Weather - The frustrating awesome

Melbourne weather... what do I say?

For those who have been to, or live(d) in Melbourne, you know exactly what I mean. For the rest of you, it's something you have to see to believe.

The weather in this fine, fine city changes so much that it's easy and normal to expect up to four seasons in a day. Just when you think it's time to put that winter coat away for another year, it starts pouring with rain and blowing icy cold winds from the antarctic, followed closely by warm northly winds from the deserts of central Australia. All of this happens before lunchtime on a Tuesday, and it's always so hard to prepare for.

This week is no different. It's been miserable and rainy, then hot and sunny, then overcast and windy, all in an afternoon. Today is the first solid nice day in a good 2 weeks, but I dare to wonder when the weather will do something crazy again.

In Melbourne we don't have seasons, just weather, and despite its frustrating aspects, it's one of the most awesomely unique things about this place. Love it or hate it, it's Melbourne :).

I have a cold :(

It's that time of the year here in Aus, and spring is in the air! For some reason, the weather started to get warmer in Melbourne but then headed back to cold, wet and miserable. Now, almost everybody in the office, including me, has the sniffles and I friggin hate it :(.

To make matters worse, my girlfriend thinks I'm being moody with her because I don't want to talk on the phone much, even though I've told her it's because I'm not feeling the best. Let the good times roll!

Finally got my iPhone 4!!!

Okay, so I know a lot of people have beef with Apple, and I've never been one to indulge in the offerings of this technology giant. However, upon hearing about the release of the iPhone 4, I was intrigued. I was intrigued primarily because it seemed to me as though this would be the one - this would be the iPhone that would have everything the first itteration of the iPhone should have had.

My excitement grew, but my skepticism wasn't too far behind. In Australia, there are two major telcos (telecommunications providers) called Telstra (the former national carrier) and Optus. With previous iPhone releases, Optus had severely strugged to provide supply for the demand, and issues went on for MONTHS!

When the iPhone 4 was released, each of the major telcos received about 12,000 units, meaning it would be nearly impossible to get the phone here around launch, unless you were willing to camp outside of the stores for days on end in an attempt to snap-grab any iP4 you could find. As a result I decided to hedge my bets and order online - but I couldn't. They'd quickly disabled that ability as the demand was too great.

I then waited for weeks but still couldn't order online. I tried visiting Optus stores, but was told that Rainchecks (as they call it) were not being taken as the demand was still far too great for the supply. So I patiently waited and waited until eventually I could order the phone. After 3 weeks and 1 day (and many emails in between) I finally got the call to get my pone!!!

On Friday (17/09) I finally received my baby, my first Apple iPhone and only my second ever product from Apple. I must say, I'm extremely impressed. The iOS is amazingly smooth, fluid and intuitive and the features that come standard with the iPhone are so handly compared to my previous POS phone, that it's nearly pointless and impossible to compare.

The phone looks like pure sex, and it's something I intend to look after and polish on a regular basis :P. I went on the $89 Timeless Cap with Optus, and that includes unlimited calls, SMS, MMS etc, and 3GB of data for 3G! Where I would previously spend between $60 and $90 for credit, and never be able to call people for fear of ridiculous expense, I can now do whatever I want, whenever I want, and the feeling of liberation is amazing!

A few of the notable features for those who don't know:

  • 720p HD video recording
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • Face Time (awesome two-camera video chat via WiFi - or 3G if you buy an app)
  • Retina Display, the screen looks amazingly sharp and crisp with the 960x640 touch display!
  • Improved multi-tasking that allows you to use multiple apps at the same time, and it doesn't seem to affect battery life!
  • Long lasting battery, quick recharge (30 minutes is about 80% charge from my experience)

I would strongly recommend to anybody the iPhone 4, if you can get it, and I'm glad that my first real Apple purchase was a resounding success! :D

My Gaming Setup!

Thanks to anshul89's suggestion, I'm posting my gaming setup!

Well like many others here I'm sure, I've been gaming since I was a toddler and been lovin' every minute of it. I started off playing games on the good old Amiga 500 which is still in a box somewhere in the garage, along with many of the archaic floppy disks that house some of the best games of my nostalgic childhood, including Alien Breed and Jaguar XJ220.

Over the years I went through various systems including the Sega Master System I and II, Sega Megadrive (or Genesis as it's known in the States), NES and SNES. Gaming consumed (and continues to consume) a particularly large portion of my daily life, in which I am happy!

Gaming in the present though has changed an awful lot since the good old days, but not at all in a bad way. Below is what you can call my gaming-life in a way, since this is where I spend my countless hours doing the thing I love most (except a few select activities... ;)).

These first pics are of my first custom-built PC from 2006. I had played around with computers before and was familiar with changing out hardware and installing components, but this was my first PC build from scratch. A long time overdue if you ask me.

This wasn't a great build so far as cable management goes, but I enjoyed building it.

Specs were:
E6600 - OCd to 3.2Ghz
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
2GB G-Skill DDR800
XFX 8800GTX

WD 320GB HDD (7200rpm)
Antec TruPower Trio 550w PSU
Antec P180i case

I later upgraded the machine with the following:

Q6600 OCd to 3.2Ghz
4GB Kingston Value RAM DDR800

Anyway onwards! Next up is my current rig which I initially built last year but upgraded my 2 9800GX2s with 2 GTX295s. Pointless upgrade? Maybe... but why should I care? :P

My PC with the 2 9800GX2s

My PC with the 2 GTX295s!

Current Specs:
Core2Quad Extreme QX9650 @ 4Ghz
EVGA 780i Mobo
4GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer - DDR1066
2x Palit GTX295 - OC 675/1170
WD 320GB and 2x 500GB HDDs (7200rpm)
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU Cooler
Thermaltake Toughpower 1200w PSU
7x Antec blue LED fans
Coolermaster Cosmos S Gaming Case
LG Blu-Ray ROM
Logictech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Logitech G9 Gaming Mouse
Razer Mantis Gaming Mousepad
ASUS VW222u and VW224u 22" LCD monitors

Fail Logitech Speakers
Sennheiser PC161 Gaming Headset

Then we have my Samsung 40" HDTV for my XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3 and sometimes PC. I got this baby about 2 years ago and it was one of the best purchases I've made.

My bed is directly infront of my computer desk and my TV is directly in front of my bed, so I can see the TV when I look over my computer monitors and can watch TV while I lie in bed :). You can actually see my PS3 in the above picture just above my left monitor.

Well that's my gaming setup for now, I might post more pics as time goes by to spruce things up a bit! Now back to playing games!!!!

It's taken a while, but I think I've kind of started! :o

So this is just me saying that I might actually start using this thing called a "blog". It's scary stuff and I haven't done it before on other forums until now. I might even consider updating it, that's right, updating it as things change in my little gaming-life.

For those who don't know, my name is Ray, I live in Melbourne Australia and I spend far too much time (wait, you can't have too much, I take that back) playing games and enjoying all of the wonderful things technology has to offer.

So, as I gradually get off my ass and start using the GS functionality a bit more, I might actually have something worth showing in my blog.

Happy hunting in the meantime! :)
