Hey all, excuse the block of text below!
Me, and I'm sure many others, have noticed a trend in mainstream (by "mainstream", I mean, like, ultra-mainstream) music over the last year or so:
It all seems to be produced with a club in mind, specifically, it seems to take after House music. Listen to Lady Gaga, Rihanna, or Britney Spears' new singles for example. Nearly all of them have heavy 4x4 bass-clap-bass-clap rhythms, with bass notes that play after every bass drum and snare drum. All of this is topped off with some melody and lyrics about "goin' all night in da club", as well as the occasional bass-drop.
This is similar to what has happening with Hip-Hop for a while. Pure Hip-Hop songs were topping charts. 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Dre, Nas and other Hip-Hop giants could release singles without a lick of pop-ness and have them become extremely popular. Look at 50 Cent's "If I can't", for example. No female pop singer on the hook, lyrics that were very gangsta-focused. In addition, non-rappers would try to sound more like Hip-Hop, be a tad more "street" and feature rappers left and right.
So I guess my question is:
Do you agree that this is happening? Do you like it/dislike it?
Love to hear yall's thoughts, and thanks a bunch if you bothered to read all that!
