[QUOTE="runpoochrun"]

My PS3 Slim has the YLOD and I would like to hear some recommendations.

What I want:

- UK service

- High value:cost ratio

- Preferably no HDD data loss, but this is not essential

Thank you.

Deaho

save your money and get a new ps3.

Are refurbished PS3s really bad enough to cost more in the long-run?

Say I could get it repaired and get a 4-year warranty for around £100. Don't you think this would be preferable to spending around £200 to get a new PS3 that only comes with a 1-year warranty?

Or are refurbished PS3s really that bad?

Yeah it's a crappy position to be in. I ended up doing the reflow and selling my old 60 GB to a friend for 40 dollars (I let him know what was wrong with it). After that I just ended up getting a new PS3. With the deals coming up around the holidays you may seriously want to consider just getting a new one. You'd probably end up spending about the same as the repair fee.Canvas_Of_Flesh
Does the soldering method work well? I keep on hearing it usually only lasts for a few weeks to a few months. If it worked well in your case, do you know if it applies to PS3 Slims?

wait wait wait, slims can get YLoD? great just great...

anyone mind explaining how it happens?almossbb

I wish I could, but at this moment, I honestly have no idea.

I kept the PS3 reasonably well-ventilated, mostly dustfree and it was not played for more than a few hours a week max on average (it was sometimes played for several hours at a time, but never more than that).

In fact, it was working just fine up until just 1 or 2 weeks ago, when apparently my brother first encountered the issue. Our last play session was perfectly fine: no hint at anything going down the drain.

Perhaps Sony put a timebomb on some PS3 slims (not all, or it would be too suspicious). Seriously, what the fudge happened to cause the YLOD? And why the hell does it cost over $100 to get it repaired? Sony is a POC.

Why should I pay hundreds to get my console fixed or replaced when it isn't my fault?

This involves turning two knobs on the power supply component slightly. It seems like this worked for a lot of people as well, although I haven't heard too much on how long it lasts or whether it could screw the console up even more in the long run. See the videos below. Anyone here tried this?

Oblivion and Crysis 2 also had lag and freezing issues.I think they possibly contributed to my PS3 Slim's YLOD.

No other PS3 game I've played has had these issues, with the exception of Uncharted 2 which only froze once.

Oh, and I have contacted Sony about the issue and am awaiting a reply from them.

Apparently it would cost upwards of $150 to have it refurbished by Sony, with only a 3 month warranty afterwards, which seems ridiculous for something that is an issue with their console.

Don't trust Sony.

If you want a temporary fix you can do a reflow.Canvas_Of_Flesh
Yeah, I've heard of that, but it seems that most people say it would only last a few weeks to a few months max, which isn't quite good enough. Thanks for your consolation though. I've also heard about another method, which involves turning two knobs on the power supply component slightly. how bout the simple fact that they fixed the overheating problem? (YLOD)ChikaraShref
I'm not sure if they've fixed the overheating problem, but my PS3 Slim does have the YLOD, which many people seem to think wouldn't have occurred for the PS3 Slim, so apparently the PS3 Slim might not be as flawless in this aspect as you think it is.
