for the record saturn has over 1000 gamesbultje112

No, it most certainly does not, it has ~600-700 games and 300-400 Picture and music CDs, and special editions, the picture CDs (of which there are masses) are put in the Saturn, and it cycles through artwork, that's it, that aint a "game".

The Japanese Saturn library has ludicrous amount of shovelware in it.

Compared to the N64, the Saturn had a larger software library, more third-party support, and wider diverse selection of games...Jag85

....The majority of which are Fighters and 2D scrolling Shmups.

  • Crude three-course racing games
  • Crappy 3D platformers
  • Crappy splitscreen support
  • SNES-era Action-Adventure games

What competes with the Zelda's and Soul Reaver? Nothing

What competes with Mario 64, Banjo's, Spyro's, Ape Escape? Nothing

What racers have >8 courses, Championship modes? Nothing, parts customisation? Nothing.

FPS Splitscreen deathmatch? Nothing.

Neither N64, nor Saturn have all genre's covered, only one that manages that is PS1 unfortunately.

Most of the high profile Saturn games came out prior to 1998, N64 didn't even start until 1997, and carried on till 2000, as such they have very different libraries, and very different strengths and weaknesses to each other, Saturn has more 2D emphasis, N64 has more 3D emphasis.

Saturn may have a bigger library, but it also has significantly more shovelware, putting shovelware on N64 was a losing proposition due to the expense or manufacturing cartridges.

I'm not arguing that Saturn doesn't have more ok to good games on it than N64, it most certainly does, I'm just arguing that Saturn's library isn't inherently more balanced than that of the N64. Quite frankly as a platformer and Racing game fan I find the Saturn extremely lacking.

I don't know about Yager (doesn't look that good to me)Lucianu

Yager is actually supposed to be pretty good, I own it but haven't played it yet.

"Call of C'Thulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" is awesomeMonkeySpot

I also enjoyed it, but people have told me the US version isn't as cheap as the European version so I'm a little wary of recommending it (the difficulty can be quite brutal at times IMO).

I like how you have to include 2D platformers.Jakandsigz

I thought I was doing you a favour! :?

5 of which play very similar and are collect-a-thons, some with a few gimmicks to change it up.Jakandsigz

5? What 5?

Conker certainly doesn't play anything like M64, the Banjo's, or DK (outside of maybe the first 20 minutes at least), the game is pretty much a linear action game of zombie shooting, beach head attacking, racing, platforming, and slo-mo Matrix shoot-outs.

I guess you could say Rocket: Robot on Wheels has a similar structure, but the implementation is very, very different.

You also forgot about Rayman 2 again, and adding Silicon Valley to the mix (a game that I personally don't even consider to be a platformer), hurts your case even further, that game is pretty much all puzzles (and is brutal).

and whatever Ape Escape falls inJakandsigz

Its a game where you collect monkeys :)

The point was that the top 3D platformers on this site have more variety than the top A+ platformers on the N64.Jakandsigz

According to this site there is only one A+ PS1 platformer anyway!

(which I disagree with, but hey you're the one using Gamespot as the yardstick)

What is this? Klonoa Crash 3 Ape Escape Crash 2 Spyro 2 Spyro 3, Lost in time, Pandemonium 2, Spyro 1, Pit Fall 3DJakandsigz

Yup, you just listed three Spyro games, two crash games, and a sequel to Pandemonium, loads of samey sequels

Not sure what your point was to be honest

Compared to: Banjo one and 2 Super Mario 64 and Conker.Jakandsigz

and

  • Rocket: Robot on Wheels
  • Better Rayman 2
  • Donkey Kong 64
  • Duck Dodgers
  • Mischief Makers
  • Kirby 64

and according to gamespot, the PSX has more high rated platformers to choose from.Jakandsigz

Eh? Not that anyone cares about Gamespots ratings, but this is what they look like -

  1. Banjo Tooie - 9.6
  2. Banjo Kazooie - 9.5
  3. Mario 64 - 9.4
  4. Conker's Bad Fur Day - 9.3
  5. Rayman 2 (N64) - 9.3
  6. Klonoa - 9.2
  7. Donkey Kong 64 - 9.0
  8. Crash 3 - 8.9
  9. Ape Escape - 8.8
  10. Spyro 2 - 8.6
  11. Crash 2 - 8.6
  12. Spyro 3 - 8.4
  13. Tomba 2 - 8.4
  14. Spyro - 8.3
  15. Rayman 2 (PS1) - 8.2
  16. Tomba - 8.0
  17. Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time - 7.8
  18. Lomax - 7.7
  19. Rocket: Robot on Wheels - 7.6
  20. Pandemonium 2 - 7.3
  21. Pitfall 3D - 7.1
  22. Mega Man X5 - 7.1
  23. Mega Man X4 - 7.0
  24. Mega Man X6 - 7.0
  25. Kirby 64 - 6.9
  26. Crash 1 - 6.8

As far as I can see Gamespot only has 1 PS1 platformer in the 9s

Only one IP has multiple N64 releases, Banjo Kazooie/Banjo Tooie (if you drop the quality down you get Gex too)

Playstation has

3 Spyro games

3 Crash games

3 Mega Man X games

2 Tomba games

etc

All I can say is, wow. Can't believe that got past the censors in a game aimed at children.Emerald_Warrior

Their menu doesn't seem very appetising either.

I think I'd be especially suspicious of Seaman's Surprise

Not that I'm saying PS1's platformers are "adult material" or anything, but you can't seriously think games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 aren't just as childish.Emerald_Warrior

Shame most good PS1 platformers were just samey sequels.

I got really fed up with Spyro and Crash by the time I got to their 3rd games.

In retrospect I think I should've just gone from 1->3 on both games.

I've also never found it surprising they had better framerates, Spyro was still doing that Mario 64 teleporter schlock even in 2000, whilst Tooie and Conker were attempting to create proper overworlds that joined onto the levels logically.

Then you've got how cramped Spyro's levels are by comparison, how much weaker the boss fights were (Tooie's balloon boss was really impressive, whilst Spyro's were all basic, small-ish boss battle in arena's).

Those PS1 games also tended to have irritating protagonists and childish plots, whilst a lot of Rare's games had sneaky humour, in jokes, and better dialogue.

Nope, I like them well enough, and both Spyro, & Crash series, as well as Ape Escape are definately 9/10 games, but Conker, and Tooie were simply more advanced, more ambitious games with more interesting plots and characters in my opinion.

I used to say 3DO, but now even that has gained a little more respect.

Probably the only legitimate one is the Master System.

-------------------------------------------

I would say N64 and XBox are also underrated, at least amongst forum-goers. Where those consoles are concerned people tend to only list the 10 highest profile releases and then act as though nothing else exists after that.
