I think the drop in confidence is due to the release of two models at once. They haven't done that before (that I know of), so there's some risk involved. Sometimes giving choice sends a signal of weakness.
(1) He said in March that: "[Atari founder Nolan Bushnell] believes mobile games are over. Speaking to All Things D..."
(2) And he said 6 years ago that: "Video games today are a race to the bottom. They are pure, unadulterated trash and I'm sad for that,"

No (1) is contrary to what he said in this article - either mobile games are over or they're not. He hasn't decided.
No (2) is contrary to this article as Nintendo - according to him - have pursued the under 12 (that is, non-violent) market. So he hasn't decided there either.
