Like some of the more sensible posters on here are saying, online mp did not ruin gaming however, it did cause some problems. I personally believe the introduction of the internet to gaming has caused problems, because it changed the way games were/are played and now, monetised.
From the advent of F2P MMOs to the selling of weapons, maps etc via downloads, gaming is now more and more geared towards enticing people into an online trap (as I call it) and once they are hooked, monetising it until nothing is left but the bare bones of a game (Battlefront and Destiny are prime examples).
On top of all that, console developers have gotten in on the act and started charging for online play. First it was only MS but now Sony are in on the act and we, the consumers, keep falling for it, time and time again. I mean, do people paying for online mp via Sony not realise the PS3 had the exact same service for free? With the option of paying for PS Plus? If we had simply boycotted that service or fewer people had signed up for it, Sony would have given it for free rather than lose out on an online platform.
This leads me to the two things that have truly ruined gaming: publisher/developer goals and consumer habits. The game providers are now in the business of providing a service for £50 which then requires another £50 or more to enjoy to its full extent. The consumer on the other hand, a generation of children and teenagers brought up by gaming fathers (sometimes mothers) have only ever experienced this and feel it is perfectly normal to have their parents fund their micro transaction addiction, because that's what it is.
It's why I, on a personal level, buy very few games these days and only buy them when I know I am getting a complete experience for my £50.
