@bush_dog: I wasn't really talking about games we would like to play (ES VI would be a great release or even announcement) but improvements to the gaming industry.

As you can tell from the theead, decreased monetisation, increased sp experiences and so on are what people are talking about.

In terms of developers, as companies, they make money through game sales and through sales of DLCs. There is no reason apart from purely greed, for micro transactions. Some developers even make money through publishers commissioning them to make a game or through licensing deals and so on. There's plenty of cash around.

@todddow: Is Origins really that good? I played the first AC game, played a bit of the sequel, recently played the American Civil War version and none of them really hit the "oh wow, thats so cool" quotient of the first game. Has Origins developed its mechanics and exploration enough to be worth a buy?

Like some of the more sensible posters on here are saying, online mp did not ruin gaming however, it did cause some problems. I personally believe the introduction of the internet to gaming has caused problems, because it changed the way games were/are played and now, monetised.

From the advent of F2P MMOs to the selling of weapons, maps etc via downloads, gaming is now more and more geared towards enticing people into an online trap (as I call it) and once they are hooked, monetising it until nothing is left but the bare bones of a game (Battlefront and Destiny are prime examples).

On top of all that, console developers have gotten in on the act and started charging for online play. First it was only MS but now Sony are in on the act and we, the consumers, keep falling for it, time and time again. I mean, do people paying for online mp via Sony not realise the PS3 had the exact same service for free? With the option of paying for PS Plus? If we had simply boycotted that service or fewer people had signed up for it, Sony would have given it for free rather than lose out on an online platform.

This leads me to the two things that have truly ruined gaming: publisher/developer goals and consumer habits. The game providers are now in the business of providing a service for £50 which then requires another £50 or more to enjoy to its full extent. The consumer on the other hand, a generation of children and teenagers brought up by gaming fathers (sometimes mothers) have only ever experienced this and feel it is perfectly normal to have their parents fund their micro transaction addiction, because that's what it is.

It's why I, on a personal level, buy very few games these days and only buy them when I know I am getting a complete experience for my £50.

Great point about destructible environments. BF1 had it to a certain extent but it's barely improved from what was happening on the PS2/PS3. In fact, speaking of environments, why not make them responsive to player actions and weather changes. Take the way the mud reacted in motorstorm for instance, too few weather changes affect player movement these days. TW3, graphically very impressive but regardless of it being dry or raining, Geralt moved and behaved exactly the same.

The tech is there to do it, heck it was there last gen. Let's actually see graphical improvements beyond simply a face lift.

@blogstrum: Yep, without the quicksave feature, the experimentation would not have been possible, or as interesting.

The title says it all I think, what do you hope will be the improvements the industry sees this year? Or rather, what would you like to see?

My first ask is pretty straightforward, the immediate removal of any game affecting micro transactions, in any form. I know this will not happen but these should be restricted to purely cosmetic buys only, with nothing affected game play. Sadly, with fighting games on the horizon, rstar re-entering the arena and EA still blatantly looking at the market like we're mugs (most of us are) I don't think this can ever come true.

My second ask would be remove all the indie rubbish that pops up on various download services, whether it be PSN, Steam or anything else. I'm not saying all indie games are rubbish, some of them are great and are rightly successful BUT close to 80% of it that pops up is what we would have, in the past, called shovelware. All these online services need tighter controls.

Have your say folks.

There arent enough games that let you save where you want. I love Skyrim and Dishonoured and co for allowing you to do that,

It's easily the best controller going. The shoulder buttons and just right, the sticks are correctly placed and even the motion sensors are OK. The XB controllers have always been too bulky and the switch feels cheap.
