Game of the Year Awards 2012

These are my personal Game of the Year Awards. These are my opinions, so don't complain about my choices. Expect the winners on New Year's Eve.

Update (December 7, 2012):

Due to the length of my message, I could not put up the full list on this site. Where I will put my awards will be determined and when I find it, I'll post a URL to said blog when the time comes.

Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland - Got it!

After waiting all week for it to come in, I finally got my copy of the collevtor's edition of Atelier Meruru, the sequel to 2011's Best Sequel winner Atelier Totori. I got the To-shirt, art book, soundtrack and (of course) the game itself. This was the highlight of my night since I had to work long tonight. I know there are people who feel worse after their days, but my right foot is feeling funny right now. I'll get to playing Meruru once I test a combo in Street Fighter X Tekken (haven't been able to stop playing it). I might post up my review for this when I get around to it, but definitely expect me to play it.

Most Anticipated Games of 2012: Role-Playing Games

Happy New Year! People have announced their Game of the Year and are looking forward to what's next. 2011 was arguably THE Best Year in Gaming. Rather than compile a Top 10 List like in the past, I decided to just discuss the big games of 2012 from each genre. I can already see 2012 being another incredible year, possibly even better than last year. But only time will tell if it will be able to claim that title. Since these blogs can only hold so many words, I'll have to do the Most Anticipated of 2012 as a series. Before I start, I should mention that this is only for games with confirmed 2012 release windows and games with incredibly vague release schedules (Grand Theft Auto V, The Last Guardian, etc.) will not be mentioned or involved. Now with that out of the way, please enjoy.

Role-Playing Games

This will be the last of my Most Anticipated of 2012 series and it's undoubtedly the best. RPGs have had a constant slew of quality releases since 2010 and that continued in 2011 and will continue in 2012 based on what's already set to release this year. This might also be the longest of my Most Anticipated series, since there's so much to talk about, but I'll keep it to the minimum of what I can do.

There are two 2012 RPGs that are on everyone's mind in particular and they're both multiplatform: Mass Effect 3 and Final Fantasy XIII-2. First, I'll talk about Mass Effect 3, the final game in the planned trilogy from BioWare. Other than the melee system, nothing's really changed from Mass Effect 2, though that's not a bad thing. However, the sense of scale in terms of your decisions and the enemies you fight are at an all-time high for the series and players will finally get to see the decisions they made in the first two games affects their experience in the final game. Actually, I just remembered that I need to play the first two games over again because of the XBox profile problem I had last month. Once I finish those up, I'll play Mass Effect 3. I'll probably still pick it up, but if I don't beat them both by March 6, I'll have to buy it and play it when I'm done.

Now, on to Final Fantasy XIII-2, the sequel to my Best Role-Playing Game, Best Graphics and Best PlayStation 3 Game in 2010. Though that's not why I'm excited about it, it's the improvements to the design. While I didn't mind the linear hallway of the original, I'm even happier knowing that I have a lot more flexibilty in the order in which I tackle the objectives. When it was first announced, I was not expecting time travel at all. While this might evoke Chrono Trigger, it's set up more like Radiant Historia where you can go to specific periods in time and go in as though almost nothing you did happen before. Sqaure is really trying to make up for its mistake, with an evolved version of XIII's battle system that's more invloving and has a variety of monsters to recruit to customize your Paradigm loadouts, a Crystarium that has you evolving a character's particular stat when they level up and a seemlingly endless number of ways to alter each timeline that multiple playthroughs are a necessity for this Final Fantasy. What's even better, what took players 25 hours to get to ill be provided within the first few hours of XIII-2. It comes out early on January 31, so be sure to pre-order soon if you want to get your hands on this, and you can get the Collector's Edition for an extra $20. Sounds like a deal to me, I already have the CE on reserve and fully paid off.

Here's an interesting story. RPGamer put up a poll last month to ask their users what their most anticipated RPG of 2012 is. Surprisingly, neither Mass Effect 3 or Final Fantasy XIII-2 were #1, as they were #3 and #2 respectively. What was #1 was none other than Tales of Graces F, the PS3 port of a 2009 Japanese Wii title that was released in 2010, and we get it a week after Mass Effect 3, March 13. While Japan has had a flood of Tales games over the last 3 years or so, other countries have been left out in the cold. That changed when on February 2, 2011 Namco announced that they were localizing Tales of Graces F for North Americs, and Europe later in the year. We finally have a solid release date and fans of both Tales and JRPGs in general will finally have an experience to really sink their teeth into. Other than an enhanced resolution, Graces F adds a few new titles and an epilogue sequence that adds an extra 10-15 hours to the already beefy 30-40 hour game, and that doesn't even include stuff like side quests. Unlike past Tales games, titles directly affect the gameplay rather than being purely cosmetic costumes. Titles in this game allow you to level up your character in a particular way such as specializations in healing, combat, magic, ice damage and more. Based on the latest trailer, it appears that the localization is going very well, with Bryce Papenbrook (Masaomi Kida from Durarara!!) voicing main hero Asbel and Cassasndra Morris (1st voice of Leo and Luna in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds) as heroine Sophie and solid dialogue. For me, March 13 can't come soon enough.

Another one of 2012's RPGs is one that has been bringing up a lot of questions, particular when you're also talking about this site's Best of 2011. What many people are calling the savior of the JRPG genre, Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii was awarded GameSpot's Best Wii Game of 2011. This was probably on the part of the UK editors. However, for some weird reasons, Nintendo of America has refused to bring this game over to the States until last month and what's even weirder is that us North Americans won't have the game until Spring. The game's already in English, so why they chose not to release it close to the UK release is so eccentric, it makes Dan Schneider's shows (such as iCarly and Victorious) seem tame by comparison. It might be coming a little late in the Wii's life cycle, especially for North America, but it might be the Wii's lastamazing title, in addition to be an awesome role-playing game.

One of the other RPGs I'm excited about is set for release on the 3DS and that title is Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. Birth By Sleep on the PSP has set new standards for the series and with faster combat and superb visuals for a 3DS game, it's looking the part so far. There's still much more we don't know about the games, like what are the other worlds that will appear, since we know about Traverse Town and locations from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, The Three Musketeers and Tron: Legacy. What's probably the most interesting part of the game is what the story's revelations will be, as 3D will be the start of the story to the final game. Another thing to note is rather than Final Fantasy characters making cameos, characters from another game by Tetsuya Nomura, The World Ends With You, will be making an appearance. I was a big fan of that game when I got to play it in 2008 and is still one of my favorite games on the Nintendo DS.

And there's much more where that came from. RPGs such as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (which I'm not exactly excited about), Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, Gungnir for the PSP and Dragon's Crown by Vanillaware (developer of cult hitsOdin Sphere for PS2 and Muramasa: The Demon Blade for Wii) for PlayStation Vita and PS3. The genre is no stranger to remakes and there's already a few on the way such as Tales of the Abyss for the 3DS (which Europe already has) and hopefully, Persona 4: The Golden, which is a PS Vita remake of my favorite game of all time. If you're a RPG fan, 2012 is going to be like 335 days of Christmas. (I'd explain why not 365, but it woudn't be witty if I did.)

Most Anticipated Games of 2012: Platformers/Action Games

Platformers/Action Games

Numerous action games are scheduled to release in 2012, but none probably have people more excited than the Tomb Raider reboot. Earning my Best Action Game Award at E3 2011, this new Tomb Raider sees a younger Lara Croft on an expedition that precedes the others and transforms her into the treasure hunting archaeologistwe know today. This new Tomb Raider appears to be more engrossing, atmospheric and terrifying. I can't wait to see what happens next for Lara Croft.

Although other people aren't particular fond of where Ninja Gaiden is going with Ninja Gaiden III, I think it'll still be a great game. Sure, the difficulty is going to be easier than any of the prior games, but Sigma 2 proved that they could make Ninja Gaiden easier without taking away challenge. Sure, you're all mad because the high difficulty defined Ninja Gaiden, but for others it's the responsive and satisfying combat system. I fall into the latter, as it was the reason I liked the games. I've played Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden IIand Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. In Sigma, I had quite a bit of difficulty with stronger enemies, but I was able to complete it on Ninja Dog mode. In Ninja Gaiden II, I had died so many times, I got an Achievement (and I was playing on Path of the Acolyte) and when I was fighting two exploding armadillos at once and th Archfiend in its first form, I respectively had an extremely frustrating time getting through and could not complete that fight (in other words, I never finished the XBox360 version). When Sigma 2 came out, I played on Path of the Acolyte, died only twice during the whole game and finished it. I just think the difficulty was too high (I had a much easier time in the likes of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls) until Sigma 2. While I don't think the competitive multiplayer will be all that (why would they not have customizable kunoichis/female ninjas when we've played as them in prior games), it will be a nice step forward for the series. I know I spent a lot of words for this one game, but I'm just trying to get a point across.

If there's one platformer this year I'm looking forward to more than any other, it's Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, the long-awaited sequel in the Sly series. Fans have been waiting over 6 years for the series to return and thanks to Sanzaru Games who developed the Sly Collection for PS3, we can finally see our friends Sly, Bentley and Murray again. Sanzaru clearly has respect for the series, as they are trying to meld the best parts of the three games with beautiful new graphics and more cinematic cutscenes than the PS2 hits. And one of the best parts for fans is that they'll get to meet Sly's ancestors, who were only mentioned in the prior games. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that this is my most anticipated game of 2012, even though there are a couple of other games that hold that title.

Another action game I can't wait for is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which was originally called Metal Gear Solid: Rising, a stealth and action game. But after some revisions, the game became squarely focused on action. Thankfully, Konami and Kojima Productions chose the right developer for the job, none other than Platinum Games, the developers behind the great MadWorld and amazing Bayonetta and Vanquish. They are a developer that know action games and I have no doubt that the final product will be polished and fine-tuned. I wasn't as excited about this game until they revealed the changes to the project. While it's true that I would've prefered to know how Raiden became the samurai cyborg he was in Metal Gear Solid 4, I think I'll like the gameplay for the better. And with the level of scale, flair and polish that developer Platinum is known for, and I think we might have one of 2012's best action games, if it comes out this year.

And that's only scratching the surface, since there will be other sequels to big hits such as Darksiders 2, Uncharted: Golden Abyss as a launch title for the PlayStation Vita, Resident Evil: Revelations and Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS, Max Payne 3 (which I'm not that excited about), as well as new games in the Assassin's Creed and Sonic the Hedgehog series. 2012 is sure to be another great year for action games and platformers.

Moat Anticipated Games of 2012: Shooters

Happy New Year! People have announced their Game of the Year and are looking forward to what's next. 2011 was arguably THE Best Year in Gaming. Rather than compile a Top 10 List like in the past, I decided to just discuss the big games of 2012 from each genre. Now with that out of the way, please enjoy.

Shooters

While the shooter genre is the most popular out there, 2012's line-up feels somewhat slim compared to that of 2011. Probably the most prominent and interesting shooter scheduled for release this year is BioShock Infinite. Winning numerous Best of Show Awards at E3 2011, many are looking forward to this game. Rather than returning to the underwater dystopia of Rapture, Irrational is introducing a whole new place set in the skies in the 1920s(which seems almost impossible in that time period), players will get to experience a similar feeling when they enter Columbia as they did when they first entered Rapture. What's more exciting about this installment is that the main character is far more tangible, with a name, personality, story and voice that's far more interesting than BioShock's protaganist. Without a doubt, BioShock Infinite is intent and most likely set to be 2012's top shooter.

While BioShock Infinite may be the most interesting shooter of 2012, but Ubisoft is bringing two shooters this year. What's probably the one I'm looking forward to the most is Far Cry 3, the follow-up to 2008's hit and a graphical stunner. Based on what Ubisoft revealed at E3, the visuals are probably the most realistic and prettiest I've ever seen in a game with lush tropical jungles, excellent water and fire effecs and amazing animation overall, that latest Far Cry might take home 2012's Best Graphics. However, the quality gameplay seen in the same video also looks interesting. Even months after its unveiling, I still have the line "Have I told you the defintion of the word insanity?" stuck in my head. That single moment is just that memorable.

The other Ubisoft shooter aiming for a 2012 release is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. To me, it seems like the type of shooter I'd go online and team up with a few strangers for some co-op action. I have no doubt that it will provide a solid multiplayer experience, but whether the single-player delivers is still to be determined. We'll have to wait until it's released to find out for sure.

One of the things my friends and I love about Borderlands was how it meldedthe RPG mechanicsof Fallout 3(minus the decision-making) and much more precise shooting that was far less stat-based. Many expect Borderlands 2 to offer many more guns (a bazillion more as the developers would probably say) among other things. One of 2009's surprise hits gets a follow-up that is one of 2012's most anticipated games.

Other shooters include Syndicate, a FPS reboot of a RTS, X-COM, Prey 2, Halo 4 (developed by 343 Industries who made the Combat Evolved Anniversary)and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The only other shooter I'm interested in is the 2012 Call of Duty. Say what you will about me being a COD fan, but I had to kick MW3 off some of my awards, so what does that say about me?

Most Anticipated Games of 2012: Fighting Games

Happy New Years!

Fighting Games

So far, there are quite a few high profile fighting games coming out in 2012. The first one to be released will be SoulCalibur V for XBox360 and PS3 owners on January 31. Although it probably refines the series more than it will innovate, it will still be a high-quality fighting game. While I will miss Taki, Project Soul has been keen on keeping fans of certain characters satisfied by keeping some of the original cast while introducing their children or proteges. What has me and my friend most excited about this installment is that Character Creation now offers near limitless possibilities with additions such as customizable and movable paints among other options (although I'm sure several people already have dirty ideas about customizing the chest sizes of their female creations).

Another high profile fighting game is scheduled to release on March 6, Street Fighter X Tekken. Considering that a large portion of the cast is still unannounced, I do hope that the leaked character roster is true (Many people are really clamoring for the likes of Juri and Sakura from Street Fighter and Jin and Ling Xiaoyu from Tekken). Even though the Pandora system seems a bit too risky to be something I would use, the trailers have clearly shown just how incredibly deep this fighting game is. Trailers have also revealed that this will be the most fully-featured fighting game ever with new online modes such as waiting for matches in Practice Mode, a 4-player Brawl mode al a Super Smash Bros. among a few others.

Yet another fighting game sequel is set for 2012. Although Tekken X Street Fighter probably won't launch until 2013, Tekken fans do get Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I never played the original Tekken Tag Tournament, but I always hear how it's the best game in the series. Sounds like it has a very high pedigree to live up to, but so far it seems to be a quality fighting game with great visuals and animations.

One other fighting game scheduled to release in 2012 is, oddly enough, a licensed title from Japan. However, Cyber Connect 2 have proved themselves time and again to be true Naruto fans and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations appears to be their best and content-filled game yet. Taking both the original Naruto and Naruto Shippuden anime series and merging them together for one game is a Naruto fanboy's dream come true. As obvious the outcome as it seems, fans will finally see which version of the #1 hyperactive knuckle-head ninja comes out on top in a fight. With the Ultimate Mission Mode spanning both ends of Naruto's story with special hidden stories and a roster of over 60 characters, fans will have plenty to sink their teeth into.

If we're lucky enough, we might get the long-awaited Dead or Alive 5by the end of the year. Include this with other fighitng games such as the dowbloadable Skullgirls, the Vita remake BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus and (hopefully) the localization of Persona 4: Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena, and we've got a great year for the fighting game genre.
