i could be wrong, but i believe as with most electronics, if left plugged into an outlet, there will still be some minimal current flow to the unit, even when the power has been turned off.
if you turn the unit off with the switch in the back, it may stop the current drain. again, i'm not 100% certain that this is the case with the ps3.
i try to unplug any electronic equipment that i don't use on a regular basis (logitech remote recharge base, rock band usb hub, IR wireless speaker receiver, etc.).
i also have a 360 with a quick recharge station. if i leave that plugged in, the unit makes a high pitched buzzing sound when held up to my ear so i know it's wasting electricity when not in use.
when in doubt, turn your ps3 off in the back as long as easily accessible. mine isn't and since i use it daily, it would be too much of a hassle to get up every time i wanted to turn it on.

i believe you are correct. leaving it in standby mode will drain energy still but not switching it off in the back will allow you to turn on it via your wireless controller so you don't have to walk to your ps3 :)

you can download the database from psn. that's how i caught up on some of it since i only played one and two
