I guess people sometimes fail to remember that kids don't want to play kiddy games. They want to rock the car in GTA3 and have chainsaw fests in their games or play what their older relatives are playing. Mature gamers don't actually care about the rating of a game is or how 'cutesy' the character is if the game is fun. The fat plumber lives on with a fairly similar story everytime because getting from point A to point B is so insanely fun. It isn't a nostalgia thing, either.
