Maybe I should start a weekly "What were you thinking" topic. What do you think?
Well let me tell you about this one.
As most people know we are knee deep in the middle of Lent. Giving up things, and no meat on Fridays for most Christians at this time.
Chick-Fil-A prides itself on being a spiritual company, putting on a huge light display on during the Christmas holidays, and they are close their locations every Sunday. "Our founder, Truett Cathy, made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened his first restaurant in Hapeville, GA. He has often shared that his decision was as much practical as spiritual. He believes that all franchised Chick-Fil-A Operators and Restaurant employees should have an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and worship if they choose to do so." This quote was taken from www.chickfila.com
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Chick-Fil-A, they are a fast food restaurant that serves chicken sandwiches and waffle fries. They have a great add campaign with a bunch of cows that tell us all to "Eat more chikin" (spelled incorrectly on purpose :)).
Knowing all of this I was shocked to see that they are offering FREE chicken biscuit sandwiches on Friday mornings during Lent.
What are they thinking?
Now, I am not a very religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but I do adhere to the no meat rule on Fridays during Lent. I know that they have to know that this is Lent, and it upsets me that they would do this. Not because that I cannot partake in free food, but because of the mixed message that this company is sending out. This time of year most restaurants are showing commercials with their fish sandwiches, or fish platters, etc and this company is offering free sandwiches that contain meat! By doing so they are excluding a huge portion of the community, the community that they pride themselves on being a part of.
Just for grins I sent them an email about my thoughts on this matter. I'll post back if and when I get a response from them.
Until then what do you think about this?
