~Movies - Cinema? Home theatre?~

The movies have long been a means by which an ordinary person can leave behind the troubles of everyday life for a few hours and become caught up in an entirely different, a more glamorous and exciting life. However, I wonder what is so special about watching a movie at the cinema. What is it that keeps people going even though the price of a movie ticket keeps rising?

There is tough competition for the entertainment dollar – sporting events, concerts, plays, cable and network television, video games, the internet and more. Yet, the film industry thrives. The reason, for the most part, is simply that magical experience that one gets from going to the cinema and the experience of watching in it. It just cannot be replaced by a home theatre system, no matter how great the system is. Many theatre operators take extra measures to ensure movie patrons have a pleasurable experience by providing friendly service, extra comfortable chairs and a superior audio-visual system. The whole ambience of the cinema is created so that moviegoers focus entirely on the movie without interruption. There is also something about sitting in that dark auditorium that is able to draw one into the story. Besides, the big screen really makes a difference, especially for watching action-packed movies with special effects.

Sitting in here? Totally awesome.

Another important factor which enhances movie-going is the group reaction in an audience. Watching a movie alone at home is a very different experience from watching with a big group of people. Comedies seem much funnier when seen with a receptive crowd. Action films seem more exciting when an audience collectively cheers on the hero. People usually go with at least one friend to the movies, so it is more of a social outing than anything.

Having a decent home theatre system at home. Can you really afford it?

Although electronic digital presentation is improving, and theatrical presentation technology may eventually change from its century-old standard of 35mm motion picture film, a night out at the movies will likely survive as one of the many entertainment alternatives because it is special.
