well a lot of other games use SECUROM copy protection. that protection system is completly broken from a design point of view. i have no problem with software 'phoning home', hell i make software that phones home (though not for the purpose of authenticating but for updates) it's a pretty standard process, what is annoying however are use-counters, they're crap especially from a programming point of view, they will only cause you pain and suffering, subcription based copy protection is a thousand times more effective.
THE REAL PROBLEM WITH SECUROM AND DRM IN GENERAL is that stiffing 'pirates', quoted because i use about 3 different PC with more than one OS on each, with a system that count the number of time it's used in a different machine is a pain for the legal user ONLY. there's few cases where this kind of method is appropriate, RETAILS SOFTWARE IS NOT
THEY HAVE ALTERNATIVES TO DRM AND USE-COUNTER, using a subscription scheme fixes all that. they can use the already popular, tested and loved STEAM. by using a subscription system they eliminate the need for use-counters, keep a nice record of your buying habits, can come in contact with you more easily AND DO NOT SUFFER BAD PRESS.
i loved Mass Effect on the 360, i'll buy this on Steam if it is available otherwise i won't go through the hassle of SECUROM
Steam offers publisher and user the perfect solution for copy protection, backup, updates and a lot more
it's a shame that publisher, that means you EA, are reluctant to move to steam for the simple reason they don't own it, but mark my words, they will be forced one or another to move to Steam or waste million in development of another subcription based service
