UK - Halo 3 News - Halo 3 Sold Early - And Cortana No Pants And Bra

UK high street retailer Argos has responded to claims that a gamer has been able to buy a copy of Halo 3 six days earlier than the 26 September official release date (25 September in US) from one of their stores.

The reason, according to an Argos spokesperson isapparently down toa 'genuine administrative error'.

Their full response is as follows:

"Argos would like to make it clear that it does not endorse breaking street dates and continues to be committed to preventing pre-release sales through its stores and web site.

"However, we are aware that a genuine administrative error has resulted in a small number of cases where Halo 3 has already been sold. We are currently ensuring that there are no further sales of this product in-store until the official release date, Wednesday 26 September. We have already taken steps to ensure that Halo 3 is unavailable on the Argos web site for reservation or purchase until the correct date.

"We accept that this incident falls short of the usual high standards we aim to achieve and operate within and we will be taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future."

So might as well cancel that trip down to Argos, then...

Halo 3 is easily 360's biggest launch this year, but it seems Microsoft isn't about to whore out its leading series for just any range of branded tat. But while we're on board with ditching the plainly idiotic idea of Halo-themed lotto tickets, we're slightly let down to hear that Microsoft won't be taking up the opportunity to release Cortana-branded lingerie.

After all, if Bungie's Halo 3 is the Star Wars for 'generation Xbox', then surely Cortana's flourescent form is the new millenium's Princess Leia in the gold bikini? And which hot blooded male wouldn't raise an appreciative eyebrow if their loved one dressed up like Leia, or her modern equivalent? And, yes, we probably have thought about this too much...

Anyway. Microsoft's decisions aren't confined to axing holographic brassieres. Master Chief pyjamas and Covenant cups are out, but McFarlane models, Actionclix miniatures and laser-tag blasters are in.

"It's a balancing effort to be very, very careful that we don't over saturate and piss off our 15 million fans," Bungie's franchise bigwig Brain Jarrard told Reutersrecently. "We are obviously looking to broaden 'Halo' and make it accessible ... while at the same time, we want to keep feeding our core audience."

Come on, Brian. We're certain any Halo fan lucky enough to see a lady taking off her clothes would go bananas if said strumpet was clad in Cortana-esque skimpies. What? We've got to stop thinking about this stuff now? Jees...

Max Payne 3 Could Be On The Way

Analysts' double-take on Take-Two earningsIndustry watchers unveil expectations of BioShock sales, downloadable GTAIV content release date, and new installments of Max Payne and Red Dead Revolver.By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot Posted Sep 11, 2007 7:23 pm GMT

Yesterday after the end of the trading day, Take-Two Interactive released its quarterly financial report. The publisher touted the success of BioShock, lessened losses compared to the prior year, and expectations of a bright future that included its 2K Sports label turning a profit for the first time next year.

Investors seemed to like what they were hearing, as today the stock has been trading up about 6 percent from yesterday's closing price of $15.75. However, a handful of analysts expressed reservations about the numbers. Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter questioned why the company left its sales guidance unchanged despite the performance of BioShock, Manhunt 2's arrival on the last day of the company's fiscal year (October 31), and other good news from management regarding its sports label and profitable distribution subsidiary Jack of All Games.

"We are hard pressed to explain how the company will manage to generate an expected $112 million in pro forma operating losses during fiscal year 2007," Pachter told investors in a note today. "The implication is that the rest of Take-Two's business is a black hole, with losses of $112 million on approximately $400 million in other revenue."

Nollenberger Capital Markets analyst Todd Greenwald was similarly dubious of Take-Two's math, but his note to investors suggest a different reason for the flat earnings guidance. "Despite the addition of Manhunt 2 and the encouraging release of Bioshock in August, management did not raise guidance for the October quarter, leaving it at $275 to $300 million," Greenwald wrote. "We continue to believe that Bioshock's financial success will be somewhat limited by the hardcore scope of the game."

Pachter also noted that Take-Two has re****fied revenue related to the release of its Xbox 360 Grand Theft Auto IV episodic content as "long term," which he said implies a release sometime in the fourth quarter (August through October) of Take-Two's fiscal 2008. In his own note, Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson wrote that he expected the Grand Theft Auto IV episodic content to arrive in the company's third quarter (May through July) of fiscal 2008.

Wilson also delved a little deeper into BioShock, following up on Take-Two's acknowledgement that the game has shipped 1.5 million copies already.

"We forecast 3 million units in Q4 and 4 million through the January quarter," Wilson wrote, adding, "Given BioShock's enormous initial success, Take-Two will clearly release it on other platforms and create sequels if the market makes sense and if quality would not be compromised. Regardless, we expect a sequel to be released toward the end of fiscal 2009 at the earliest."

Wilson, Pachter, and UBS Investment Research analyst Ben Schachter all had a couple other expectations for fiscal 2009, with each predicting Take-Two to release new installments of Red Dead Revolver and Max Payne during the time frame. While Take-Two didn't announce those games during its conference call yesterday, it has brought the two franchises up regularly as examples of its stable of owned intellectual properties, and CEO Ben Feder said they would return sooner or later.

"In addition to Grand Theft Auto, our roster of $1 million plus wholly-owned brands includes BioShock, Civilization, Midnight Club, Max Payne, Red Dead Revolver, Manhunt and Bully," Feder said. "We fully intend to leverage these products, which are on development cycles that should complement and counterbalance each other."

David Cameron hints he would ban violent video games
The UK's opposition leader, conservative David Cameron, has outlined his "mini-manifesto" to combat crime, which he will deliver later today. Cameron told The Guardian, "We are never going to deal with crime unless we look at the broader context and say, 'Yes, tough laws, strong action on the police, but also action to strengthen our society'. And that includes, I think, video games and things like that where we do need to think of the context in which people are growing up."

Conservative leader David Cameron unhappy about "violence and misogyny" in popular culture in his speech on law and order issues.By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK Posted Aug 29, 2007 10:43 am GMT

David Cameron, Leader of the Opposition, believes that the producers of video games, movies, and music videos, along with hardware manufacturers, and ratings body the British Board of Film ****fication, need to be more responsible.

Cameron spoke out against video games and music videos as he delivered the Conservative party's manifesto on law and order in Great Britain in a press conference at Westminster yesterday. He had suggested he would do so before the event.

On the topic of the rise in crime in the UK, Cameron stated that a Conservative government, if elected, would give the police more power by abolishing the need to file forms to question members of the public, and reform current alcohol licensing laws.

During his speech, he referred to popular culture as being one of the things he believes is promoting crime, and leading to a "coarsening effect on the ethical sensibility of young people." He said, "The companies which make music videos, films and computer games have a social responsibility not to promote casual violence, the gang culture, and the degradation of women."

Cameron didn't mention what his intentions were to prevent these kind of references in popular culture, but the report did hint that greater powers would be given to the BBFC. In the report, titled It's Time to Fight Back, it states, "We all have a responsibility to ensure a healthy culture for our children to grow up in. This includes not just the producers of films and video games, but the manufacturers of the relevant hardware, and the regulators who determine age-related ****fications.

"A Conservative Government will review the regulatory framework relating to films and video games to ensure that violence and misogyny are not directly promoted to young people."
