I buy lots of digital content -- games, comic books, music, TV shows -- and so far I haven't been burned by having anything that I purchased revoked in any way (*knock on wood*) but stories like this aren't doing anything to make people more confident in moving to an all-digital world.

This is almost as bad as Sony removing backwards compatibility from the PlayStation 3 and then trying to re-sell me digital versions of PS2 games that I already own.

That's one man's opinion. The truth is that if Nintendo can get just a fraction of their Wii base to upgrade, they'll do fine. Any improvements in the US economy will only benefit them as well.

@da_chub So the kids commandeered your PS3 for themselves, and now--no longer content with Nintendo consoles--they've relegated you to playing Zelda and Mario on the Wii U that you have yet to buy?

Sounds like you need to re-establish some control in your household...

I was really hoping that Microsoft would be able to hit lower price points with the Surface tablets. (Maybe $400 for the RT and $750 for the Pro.) I don't know if those price points were unacheivable or if they decided not to let Apple be the only player in the "premium" category.

I wonder how the battery life of those Pro tablets will compare with the RT...or even with a regular laptop.

I love PC gaming, but I learned long ago to accept that we have second-class status behind console gamers. That sometimes means that we get shoddy ports or no port at all for certain games.

I'm always surprised to see older consoles selling so well. Sure, I guess the price is right for some people after a system has been around for eight years, but I wonder if they consider how quickly the game support for that console will dry up.

With most games launching with an MSRP of $60, it makes sense that only a few will percolate to the top. The perennially good sales of Madden NFL or Call of Duty aren't because they deliver exciting new gameplay every year; it's because they're not likely to let you down. It's the same reason that you might prefer eating at Wendy's as opposed to that local diner when you're out of town.

Unfortuantely, most gamers can only drop $60 every so often, and we're more likely to do it on something that we already know or have reason to be excited about. We're less likely to take a shot and see what's up with that new 007 game.

Anyways, before this turns into a full-blown rant, the moral of the story is this: MAKE YOUR GAMES CHEAPER, AND YOU'LL PROBABLY SEE INCREASED SALES.

@Dragdar I don't think it's being about being a fanboy at all. I think people like us who follow technology get excited about a lot of things that most other people don't care about. Sure, I'm impressed by seeing Android phones with quad-core processors and HD screens, but do you think my aunt knows the difference between a true HD screen and a Retina display? No. Will she ever care to find, install, and configure a dozen widgets on her home screen? No. But she does check her email, and setting that up and using it was super-easy for her on her iPhone.

I'm not saying that the iPhone is The Greatest Phone Ever Made (TM). I'm saying that there is probably more profit in making good technology that's easy to use than great technology that's not easy.

Same goes for Nintendo. They made billions of dollars in the last cycle, and they didn't do it with great hardware / tech. I fail to understand why people keep pointing out that the Wii wasn't as graphically capable as the X360 and PS3; we already knew that at launch. But I played Wii games with people that I never could have convinced to touch a standard game controller. That's what they do. Like Apple, they're making good tech that's not intimidating to average folks, not just us tech-heads.

Nintendo doesn't care how many gigaflops the PS4 or XBOX 3 can push. They're trying to catch lightning in a bottle again and find games that get aunts and grandfathers and little kids and lots of other people in the game who don't know the shoulder buttons from the triggers. It's not a bad strategy at all when it works.
