I liked it and I had never played final fantasy either until it. The gameplay is old school and of course it is an rpg, so if that is what you are into then go for it.
I don't mean to state the obvious, but it is weird noone mentioned the original game boy. Without it there is no handheld market. Handheld video game still means "game boy" to most people.
