I have no doubt that FFVII is the most popular entry in the series. Media coverage, sales numbers etc.

But you are right that there are many more factors, why this particular poll can show a different result..

I think that more hermits voted or that there are more hermits on this site. Thats all there is to it.

Thats because people can vote for their favorite without being attacked for their opinion. The FFVI fanbase is rapid to the FFVII fanbase like the SMT fanbase is to the persona fanbase.
