AMA Pro Racing to Investigate Fuel Situation

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (February 28, 2006) – AMA Pro Racing announced today that it will launch a special investigation into the fuel situation surrounding the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series. On Friday, Feb. 24, Ricky Carmichael was penalized 25 points for using illegal fuel at round six of the series at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., on Feb. 11. As part of a routine post race technical inspection at the end of the San Diego event, the fuel from Carmichael’s motorcycle, along with seven others, was tested. The fuel from Carmichael’s motorcycle was found to be out of compliance with the rules and the Team Makita Suzuki rider was assessed a 25 point penalty. The fuel from the other seven competitor’s motorcycles was determined to be within the rules. The list of riders whose fuel was tested includes Mike Alessi, Grant Langston, Jeremy McGrath, Nate Ramsey, Chad Reed, Andrew Short and James Stewart. AMA Pro Racing has required the use of unleaded fuel in AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross competition since the 2004 racing season. In making the announcement that a special investigation will be launched, AMA CEO Patti DiPietro noted that while a fuel penalty is not an appealable offense, there is enough evidence in this case to warrant an investigation. “Our goal here is to get to the bottom of this ongoing fuel situation,” said DiPietro. “The rule on unleaded fuel is clear cut. If the lead content in fuel exceeds 0.005 g/l (grams per litre) it is illegal for competition. This is an objective, easily defined measurement that has been in place for three racing seasons. What concerns us here is that we keep finding fuel that is outside of the rule limits. We expect our competitors to take every possible step to ensure that their equipment is completely within the limits of the rules, but to penalize a competitor for an offense that is completely beyond his or his team’s control is not our purpose. “Furthermore, it is not our intention to have a ruling influence the outcome of the series unless completely and absolutely warranted. This investigation will objectively determine all of the facts surrounding this issue.” DiPietro stated that an outside consultant will be contracted to conduct the investigation. It is expected that teams as well as fuel suppliers, among others, will be interviewed in this process. The finding and recommendations of the consultant will be the foundation for any further action to be taken by AMA Pro Racing officials. Until the outcome of the investigation is determined, Carmichael’s penalty stands

Week 8 Supercross Results & Updated Points Standings

ATLANTA (February 25, 2006) – Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., bounced back from a last-place finish at the previous race with a win tonight at the Georgia Dome before a crowd of 70,133, a record attendance for supercross in the 28 years of racing in Georgia. Honda’s Joshua Grant, of Riverside, Calif., won the AMA Supercross Lites main event. Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap feature event. He settled into the lead as Carmichael began working his way through the field after a seventh place start. Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., went down in a first-turn crash that ultimately cost him a shot at the win. With Reed out front, Carmichael began to make his move, and by lap eight, he had closed to within a couple bike lengths. On lap 11, Carmichael shot to the inside of Reed in a turn to take the lead. Reed stayed close down the stretch but was unable to get close enough to make a move as Carmichael took the victory, the fourth of his career at the Georgia Dome. Reed finished second and Stewart was third.“(Chad) hounded me for while out there and I was just sticking to my lines,” said Carmichael, referring to the latter part of the race. “As the track wore out it just got harder and I knew that it would be harder for Chad to get by me. We got our back against the wall and I’m going to try to win every race from here on out.”Grant won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the AMA Supercross Lites main event. He held the lead in the early stages of the and avoided a cluster of crashes that kept series front runners KTM’s Josh Hansen, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Honda’s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., out of contention.Grant cruised to the easy victory ahead of Millsaps and Martin Davalos, of Cairo, Ga., who finished third for his first career podium. -------- Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP Season Standings 1. Team Makita Suzuki Racing to Appeal

BREA, Calif. (Feb. 24, 2006) – Team Makita Suzuki Racing announced today that the team will appeal the penalty imposed by the AMA for the use of illegal fuel at round six of the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series in San Diego, Calif., on Feb. 11, 2006 . The entire Team Makita Suzuki Racing organization, including Ricky Carmichael and his crew, have followed closely all the rules established for AMA Supercross and Motocross racing. The team has purchased the same fuel throughout the last several seasons; it has been tested and was never found in violation of fuel rules before. The fuel used by the Supercross team at the San Diego round was supplied by a third-party vendor and was not tested by Team Makita Suzuki technicians before the race. Carmichael and Team Makita Suzuki Racing will compete at round eight in Atlanta with the same determination that earned World and AMA Championships in 2005, and has kept Carmichael near the top of the standings in 2006.

Penalty Issued for Illegal Fuel at San Diego Supercross

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (February 24, 2006) – AMA Pro Racing has announced that Ricky Carmichael has been penalized 25 points for using illegal fuel at round six of the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., on February 11. Fuel samples from eight motorcycles were collected at the San Diego round and the sample from the motorcycle of Ricky Carmichael was found to be in non-compliance. Fuel from the motorcycles of Mike Alessi, Grant Langston, Jeremy McGrath, Nate Ramsey, Chad Reed, Andrew Short and James Stewart was found to be in compliance. As is required by the AMA Supercross/Motocross rulebook, the samples were sent to a certified testing lab which confirmed the results of the testing. AMA Pro Racing has required the use of unleaded fuel in the AMA Supercross Series and the AMA Motocross Championship since the 2004 racing season.

Reed Comes to Atlanta Supercross with Series Lead

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (February 23, 2006) – Yamaha’s Chad Reed finds himself in the points lead of the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series as the championship moves to Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on Feb. 25, for round eight of the 16-race series. Reed took over the championship chase after a pair of unexpected turn of events in this past Saturday’s race in St. Louis. Defending AMA Supercross champ Ricky Carmichael lost his points lead after his Suzuki suffered mechanical problems resulting from a first-turn crash in St. Louis. He finished 20th, his worst result since crashing out of Anaheim I in 2002. That opened the door for Kawasaki’s James Stewart to move into the series lead, but Stewart could not capitalize on the tremendous opportunity handed to him. He crashed as well and spent nearly a lap trying to bend his lever back into place and getting his bike started. Stewart eventually got back in the race, but could only muster a 17th-place finish. Meanwhile Reed took maximum advantage of his rivals’ misfortunes. The 2004 AMA Supercross champ moved past Suzuki’s Ivan Tedesco just past half-way and pulled away to a convincing 11.3-second victory. It marked Reed’s first victory since the Las Vegas round last year and led to an emotional podium celebration for the Australian rider. “It’s unbelievable,” Reed said after winning Saturday. “I’ve been pulling my hair out this season trying to find my speed. At times I almost felt like giving up. I kept telling myself that it was a long series and I still had what it took to win. I’m so happy for my team. It felt horrible to see them working so hard and not being able to produce the results. I thank my wife and my fans for believing in me. Their support made all the difference in the world. Now we’re starting fresh and I’m ready for the second half of the season.” Carmichael dropped to second in the standings, nine points behind Reed. Stewart is now third, eight points behind Carmichael. With Atlanta marking the halfway point, the series is shaping up to be one of the best battles for the championship in many years. Carmichael has the opportunity to tie Jeremy McGrath for the record of five Atlanta Supercross wins this weekend. The Floridian has won four of the last five races in the Georgia Dome. Reed won the race in 2004. Mike LaRocco is the other former race winner expected in the field on Saturday. The AMA Supercross Lites East Series kicked off last weekend in St. Louis and Georgia’s own Davi Millsaps won the event to take the early series lead. Millsaps, riding for American Honda, will try to keep his momentum going in Atlanta. If he wins Saturday it would mark the first Atlanta Supercross Lites (formerly 125 Supercross) win for Honda since 1993. Christopher Gosselaar, of the Monster Energy Drink/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team, finished a close second in St. Louis, followed by Boost Mobile Yamaha’s Branden Jesseman making them among the favorites to challenge Millsaps this weekend. Tickets for the Atlanta Supercross are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, all participating Yamaha Dealers, at the Box Office, or charge by phone at 404-249-6400. A special Family Section is also available in the Georgia Dome for non-alcoholic family fun. When ordering tickets through Ticketmaster, request the Family Section for an alcohol-free atmosphere. You can also meet the stars of the AMA Supercross Series in the Georgia Dome pit party going from 12:30 – 5:30 pm.

Supercross Season Changes Direction as Reed Moves into the Points Lead

AURORA, Ill. (February 21, 2006) – In a matter of one week and 20 laps, Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., moved into the points lead for Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series. This Saturday at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, the season takes on a new look with former World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series champion leading by nine points (149-140) over Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., as the gate will drop in Atlanta for the 28th time in history. Press day will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23 from Noon – 2 p.m. Racers will be available for interviews and will ride the track for the media. Reed, who has finished on the podium 50 out of the last 55 races, was winless this season, but the 23-year-old Australian moved into the lead last Saturday night on lap 11 and never looked back. “I knew I could do it,” said Reed. “I never gave up. That was all I had, belief in myself because my on-track performance wasn’t showing a whole lot (in the past few weeks). So, I just went into the main event knowing that I could do it and I had to do it.” Despite going winless during the first eight Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series races, Reed’s win Saturday night may not have been such a surprise. Known for getting hot midseason, Reed has well-established track record for winning in the second half of the season. In 2003, he won six of the last eight races, in 2004, five of the last eight races and in 2005 four of the last eight races. “When you know you can win and everybody around you knows you can win, it’s tough to go home during the week wondering why I feel so good and then be so pathetic on the weekends,” said Reed. “It’s nice, I’m extremely proud of the team for sticking by me.” Carmichael, who came into St. Louis with an 11-point lead over Kawasaki’s James Stewart and 15 points ahead of Reed, was unable to add to his collection of 35-consecutive podium finishes as he did not finish the race (DNF). In turn one, Carmichael crashed with a group of riders and remounted in 17th place before heading to the pits. “We think that some suspension parts were damaged when Ricky tangled with another rider at the beginning of the race,” theorized DeCoster, Suzuki’s team manager. “There was no error on anyone’s part and no one was at fault -- it was a fluke. That’s just racing.” A favorite track of Carmichael’s, Atlanta marks his 100th supercross race. Carmichael has won in Atlanta six times during his career, twice on a 125cc and four times in the AMA Supercross class. “It’s a shame that things turned out this way because my lap times were really good in practice and I think this would have been a good race,” said Carmichael after the race. “But next week we go to Atlanta, and that’s always a special race for me because a lot of my friends and family come out.” Carmichael wasn’t the only victim of bad luck at the Edward Jones Dome. After riding in one of the top three positions for the first 10 laps of the race, Stewart crashed, stalled his bike and re-entered the race near last place. Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., was hoping to take over the AMA Supercross class’ points lead, but a disappointing 17th-place finish dropped his season standings to third place. “I had a good race going and I don’t know what happened,” said Stewart during a post-race interview. “It’s hard because I’ve worked hard all week and tonight was a good chance to take over the points lead. Either way, the Kawasaki team worked hard and we will be back next week.” In the AMA Supercross Lites class, Honda’s Davi Millsaps hopes to repeat his winning performance from last weekend when he won the opening race in the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class. If he does so, he will become the first Honda rider since 1993 to win in this division. Suzuki’s Carmichael picked up his sixth World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series race win in front of 62,764 fans last year. Kawasaki’s Grant Langston, of Murrieta, Calif., won his first 125cc Eastern Regional Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series race since 2001.

Chad Reed Walks Away from St. Louis the big Winner!

St. Louis, Missouri – February 18, 2006 – Coming into St. Louis without a win in 2006, Reed was looking to kick start his season and return to his championship winning ways. Arguably to the surprise of no one, Reed put on a dominating performance that not only gave him the win, but the class points lead as well. Reed has a past record for coming on strong in the middle of the season; winning five out of the last eight races in 2004 and four of the last eight races in 2005. Chad now sits a comfortable nine points in front of second place and seventeen points in front of third place in the Championship standings. “I knew I could do it,” said Reed afterwards. “I never gave up. That was all I had, a belief in myself because my on-track performance wasn’t showing a whole lot (in the past few weeks). So, I just went into the main event knowing that I could do it and I had to do it.” Reed later graciously thanked his team for “sticking by him” and “being so patient” this year while he tried to find his rhythm. Their patience was rewarded handsomely with a big win and the championship points lead Look for Reed to try and extend his points lead this weekend when the series heads to Atlanta for round eight of the Amp’d Mobile Supercross Series. Chad Reed is sponsored by: Yamaha, Thor, Parts Unlimited, AMP’D Mobile, Unbound Energy Drink, Alpinestars, and Scott.

Chad Reed Wins St. Louis and shakes up 2006 points standings...

St. Louis (February 18, 2006) – Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., put himself back into the championship hunt with his first victory of the season tonight before a crowd of 52,022 at the Edward Jones Dome. Honda’s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., won the opening round of the Eastern Region AMA Supercross Lites. Honda’s Jacob Saylor, of Knoxville, Tenn., won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award to start the 20-lap main event. Suzuki’s Ivan Tedesco shot to the early lead as front runners James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael struggled with bad starts. Kawasaki’s Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., was held up in the first turn and found himself back in 12th place. Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., found his fate much worse after a first turn crash caused apparent damage to his Suzuki that forced him to not finish the race. With Tedesco out front, and Carmichael out of the race, the attention turned to Stewart, who had worked his way up to third behind Reed. Only a bike length separated each rider as Tedesco crossed the finish line to start lap 10. On the ensuing lap, Reed slipped by Tedesco and took over the top spot. Stewart’s night took a turn for the worse a couple turns later when he spun out and crashed. It took him more than a minute to get his bike restarted, which, like Carmichael’s, had suffered major damage in the crash. The damaged motorcycle caused Stewart to finish the race on sub-par equipment; however, he did finish the race in a disappointing 17th place. Once out front, Reed cruised to the win. Tedesco finished second while Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca, Murrieta, Calif., was third. “Today I was horrible,” said Reed explaining his poor lap times during practice and the disappointing third place finish in the heat race. “I’ve had my head in my behind the whole season. I needed this as a confidence booster. Our whole team worked hard and I have to thank them for being patient.” Kawasaki’s Chris Gosselaar, of Victorville, Calif., won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award off the start of the AMA Supercross Lites main event. KTM’s Josh Hansen, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., jumped out to an early lead ahead, while Millsap began his charge through pack after a seventh place start. Hansen held the lead until the beginning of lap nine when Millsaps made the move into the lead. Millsaps led next six laps en route to his third career win. Gosselaar was second and Yamaha’s Branden Jesseman, of New Brighton, Pa., was third. “Unfortunately I wasn’t up front at the start, but I was able to get around traffic early,” said Millsaps. “I saw that the top guys were up front and I knew I had to pass them to get into the lead. It didn’t take me long to get used to my new bike and I guess I got it off to a good start.” ---- Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series Event Results, St. Louis 1. Chad Reed, Dade City, Fla., Yamaha 2.
