The only thing that matters to everybody on this board, who are gamers and consumers, is this:
The PS3 has a blu-ray player, has free online, AAA multi-plats, and plenty of game exclusives that aren't on any other platform. For the end user, they are getting quite a lot when they buy a PS3 today and that's all that matters - how the needs of the consumer are fulfilled, and the PS3 fulfills them and then some. The console is solidly supported by Sony and other third party companies. Financial performance of Sony and it's place on the install base rankings are pointless details that don't matter to the end consumer that purchases the console, because the important, relevant stuff is fulfilled.
Dreamcast, that was a failure. Virtual Boy, that was a failure. PS3 is not a failure - it's just not as successful as the PS2 was. There was no way it was ever going to be.
PS3 is a successful console because it has a healthy install base and plenty of software and support by Sony. If it didn't have these things, it would be a failure. It is a very safe buy for consumers.
