The reality is that developing games has become a more expensive undertaking than ever before - it's becoming increasingly cost-prohibitive. I think it is the chief reason why you are seeing so many of these dispenseable, simple, party games that are meant to appeal to as many people as possible. It's because they are cheap to make, far cheaper, compared to games like Halo and Gears. Many gaming studios just don't have the budgets.
Third option. Miyamoto said he doesn't expect it to blow the PS3 and 360 away, so I don't see a major shift in tech.

Yep, of course not. If it were to blow them away, that would mean the hardware inside it would be very, very costly. That, combined with a touch screen controller (with camera), would make the console very expensive for consumers.
I think the Wii U will be slightly more powerful than the PS3, but that's it. The console won't be setting any new benchmarks in graphics, that's for certain.
Games need to mature beyond just shooting stuff. I really appreciate creativity and artistic elements in games, I also appreciate the ones that are very immersive and provide cinematic experiences.
Actually Blu-Ray won mostly because it support movies rated NC17.

Fact. MS never really put any weight behind HD-dvd, hence why it wasn't built into the system. Sony lost this gen in all ways possible, they lost alot of their market share and lost alot of their exclusives. BR still hasn't taken over as a format, it probably never will. The next big thing will be out before BR ever has a chance to take out DVDs.
Sorry, but not fact. Blu-Ray beat HD DVD because it A) had more studio support and B) because Blu-Ray enjoyed the vastly larger install base after the PS3 hit the market. There was nothing that HD DVD could do that could get into homes in such a trojan-horse like way like Blu-Ray. It had nothing to do with NC17.
Mariokart64fan - You don't know Sony, over the last 3 years, hasn't been profitable in over half of their quarters? Sony has openly stated they aren't spending nearly as much towards development of the PS4 as they did with the PS3. Meanwhile, MS is as profitable as ever and will expend both Sony and Nintendo in terms of development of a new console.

While MS is definitely profitable, that doesn't mean they are going to spare no expense when it comes to their next console. Sony put out a technologically superior console, and it wasn't the huge money-maker and runaway success they hoped it would be. I think they expected that with such a huge install base for the PS2 that people would just naturally buy a PS3. Who knows? It's a blunder they are likely not going to repeat and one that Microsoft won't duplicate.
I bought a Blu-Ray player. Other people may be enjoying them, but for me it was a waste of money - I shouldn't have bought it. I haven't watched a single Blu-Ray movie on it in months. Every movie I have watched has been from on-demand, downloaded on streamed.
If it were the only HD game in town, then I would use it a lot more, but there are too many other ways to get HD movies.
So yeah, Sony won the format war, but Blu-Ray will also meet its end.
