Quick Impressions

Here are some impressions on three new games Ive been playing this week. Ill be writing reviews for two of them shortly.

Bad Company 2-Ps3

Time Spent- Single Player: 13 Hours Multiplayer: 20 Hours

-Beat Campaign on Normal and Hard all collectables found..Its a C for Backloggery

-Rental From Gamefly

Well Bad Company 2 is much the same as the first one, but it is improved in many aspects. I played the beta and multiplayer demos extensivly and knew what to expect in terms of multiplayer. Bad Company 2 has a lot more weapons and unlocks than the first one and has a very nice class progression system as you earn points while playing online. The game modes are largly unchanged and the maps in my opinion can be a lot better. I also play the game very fast and good( prolly the shooter im best at) and I always get stuck on terrain objects and in doorways where i shouldnt be getting stuck, and this pisses me off. The campaign is alot better in the 2nd one with there being a lot more action and set pieces and a lot less running around doing nothing. Still though there are some faults and I really cant justify giving bad company 2 too much higher than the 8.5 I gave the first bad company. Im just about done the game and ready to ship it off to gamefly. I cant give it much higher than a 9.0/10.

Dantes Inferno PSP

Time Spent- 5 Hours 60% into single player

Gamefly rental

I wanted this on the consoles, but it was only available on psp so I got it there. The game is pretty much the same as the console versions with obviously worst graphics. The gameplay is fun but only a little bit. The puzzles in the game are annoying and frustrating and there are a lot of them. The combat comes in the form of set pieces where you have to kill certain enemies to open doors ect. Most of the combat and puzzles are timed too which is so annoying. Ive died a lot in the game and honestly most times where due to design flaws in the game. This surprised me as it was made by Visceral Games, the company that did Dead Space (which was awesome but the lead designer left). I am slightly dissapointed in the game and cant wait to finish it so I dont have to play it again.

6.5/10

Final Fabtasy XIII-Ps3

-5 Hours in on Chapter 3

Bought at launch

Im not the biggest RPG fan and I find most of them boring. I do however like square games especially Final Fantasy. FF VII is one of my all time favorite games. I played a little of FF X and havent played XII at all. Honestly everyone who has complained about FF XIII needs to shut up. It has gotten mixed reviews scoring as low as a 5 out of 10 and people have said its too slow the characters and story suck ect.

Right now I am honestly blown away with the game and cant find anything wrong with it. 10/10. Honestly once I get around to finish its massive length it could be one of the best games of this generation. The graphics especially in cutscenes are stunning, the combat system is so awesome, the characters are all good, and there is a ton of story and back story here. I honestly love the game.

The only games Ive given a 10 to this generation include...GTA 4 (2008) Goty...Modern warfare 2 (2009) GOTY....thats it do you see a trend.

Unfortunate Things and SFII Turbo HD Remix

To start I just wanted to say that a really bad hurricane hit New Hampshire this weekend where I am currently in college. I know its very odd for a hurricane to hit in the winter, but it was snowing, raining, and we had wind over 120 mph. The city I live in and where my campus is located is a complete disaster area. I was forced to leave campus and go back home on friday, as there is no electricity and there wont be any for a week at least. A tree came up right next to my dorm and I watched it fall and crush a car in the parking lot next too it. It was the worst storm ive ever been in, and there have been some deaths and Hampton Beach, a famous beach, had a huge fire because of the storms.

So unexpectidly I am home here with barely any clothes or anything. I do however have my ps3 with me to keep me occupied when while I wait for word that it is safe to return to campus. I purchased Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the psn because I saw it was half price. I always wanted this game but I felt 15$ was too expensive. I am a little disappointed in the online play as it is very laggy at points and the match making system is pretty bad. I have however gotten into some good matches over the past couple days, and the graphical style really looks great. As much as I love Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV ill have to give HD Remix an early score of 7.0 since it doesnt play as good as it should and because of the matchmaking.

Thanks for bearing with me with this long blog.

Gamespot Review posted by me

Thats all for now looking to play demon souls and a few other games in the near future!

Demon Souls Follow-Up

First, I just wanted to note a mistake in my last blog where I had said the game was made by Atlus. In fact it was published by Atlus but developed by a different company. (thanks serbine).

Since I last posted my impressions I have spent another 3 hours or so on the game bringing my total time spent close to 10 hours. I had said I could play it for 3-4 hours at a time, but I have only been able to play it a max of 2 hours at once during a sitting. The main reson for this is that it has becme so repetative dying and playing levels over and over. Sone grinding for souls has also been involved. However it still really feels like you accomplish something major everytime you slay a demon or progress further into the game. I am still going to try and stick out and at least beat the game if not get a platinum trophy which requires 4 playthroughs. Ive upgraded some weapons so the game is getting a little easier, and I also just killed a dragon that was killing me everytime by lighting bridges on fire. It took about 75 arrows to kill the dragon which is pretty insane.

One good thing about Demon Souls is that because there isnt much of a story I will be able to play Final Fantasy XIII alongside it and I am also working on an Uncharted 2 Hard run, Bad Company, and Just Cause as well. I always try to play one story game at a time because I get jumbled easily.

I have also found a way to stream on justin.tv while playing in HD so usually when I am playing something you can watch and get my reactions to the game

Demons Souls Impression Wow just Wow

Wow, Idonteven know where to start when looking at Demon's Souls, so I will give you a warning. This game is one of the hardest if not the hardest gameihave ever played. Iveplayed the game about 6-7 hours over the course of 2 days and I was barely able to get by the first boss of many and into the second level. I must say that I was on the verge of rage quitting many times.

The main concept of the game is to warp to these various worlds and slay the 3 or 4 major demons that are trying to throw off the world balance. There are roughly 6 worlds in total with at least 3 parts of each. Once the first bossis beatenit opens a new path to the next boss in the level. There has been not much story so far which is unusual for an RPG, but in my opinion the game creates a newrpggenre mixing different elements to create a first time experience.

The game plays as a third person action RPG. The action however has to be very planned and the player must use tremendous patience in attacking and blocking. Yourcharacterhas a very limited stamina bar and using attacks and blocking drains the bar quicklyforcingyou to step back for a second and recover the stamina. Therefore if you go in with your axe swinging you will fail and fail again. Honestly even if you are patient you will fail. There are various weapons that can be upgraded and many shields as well. You can equip weapons to each hand or use a weapon with both hands to make it more powerful. In order to besuccessfulyou must play the game slowly and really think about eachcharactermovement, and enemies will often ambush you or jump out from nowhere.

The main purpose of the gameplay is to collect souls by killing enemies and using these souls to upgrade weapons, charecter stats such as strength dexterity ect, and to purchase items. The difficulty comes in here as everytime you die you loose all of the souls you have collected. They stay at the spot where you died, and you must start the level over and reach the souls you lost before you die again or else they are gone for good and your pretty much screwed. Everytime you die you lose everything except for items, and are forced to play the entire level over until you get to the end of it. This is where the frustration comes in and I spent about 5 hours trying to get past the first level where if in a regular game it would have taken an hour tops. Demon Soul's really isnt that long but the replaying of levels when you die can easily add 50+ hours to the game with a lot of frustration.

The uniqueness of Demon Souls comes from its online component. As you are playing the game in your world you see the outline of other players that are currently playing the game. You can see every move other players make. You can also interact with other players by leaving messages on the ground that indicate traps ect. Messages can also be rated, and when a message you left is rated you gain all of your HP back. Whenever a player dies you can see their bloodstain on the ground, and thisallowsyou to interact and you can watch exactly how the player died leaving you with some hints as how to kill enemies ect. When you die you enter soul form as I mentioned with having lost all of your souls and playing the level over. As you advance past the first stage of the game the option is allowed that you can join some one elses world and help them in coop beat a stage. This will give you your souls back and allow you to regain your body without having to go find your bloodstain and recover the souls. If you want to be summoned to another players game much like player messages there is a blue indicator on the ground that is placed for you and people who stumble apon it can summon you into the game. Likewise as you are traveling you can summon people in your game to help you with stages. The other aspect to this is that you can become an evil soul and invade other players games, and if yousuccessfullykill the human player you get your body and souls back. Therefore you can play the game as friendly orabsolutelyevil. I havent done either of these yet, but as I play more I will no doubt explore those options. In your world you can also kill NPCcharactersto gain an evil soul or you can remain on the good side. The game world itself can also shift from good to evil, and when the world is evil the enemies are even harder but you gain greater treasures from killing them. Another aspect that adds to the difficulty is that the game pretty much saves with every step you take so if you really messed up there is no way to reverse what happened.

Technically Demon Souls looks fine and the graphical ****really creates a mysterious and dark world to play in. There have been notechnicalglitches or bugs so far. The graphics and audio in the game are not outstanding but they are done well to fit the theme of the game. Some of the enemies and bosses are just creepy looking and each type of enemy has its own ****

Honestly if this game was a little less difficult and more forgiving and had a more developed plotline it could be one of the best rpgs ever made. I have mentioned how infuriating and frustrating the game is, but there issomethingthat makes you keep playing and playing even though you arnt making any progress. I could see myself pouring hours into the game without ever accomplishing much at all, and I applaud Atlus for making such a unique and pleasing game even though they are putting gamers through torture with the difficulty. This is also my first Atlus game Ive ever played and I am really impressed. My early score of Demons Souls is an 8.5/10 and without the numbing difficulty this game would be getting close to a 9.5/10 but right now I cant score it much higher due to the frustration. I will keep you all updated to my progress in the game. If you really like rpgs or are looking for a challenge there is no doubt a ps3 is worth owning just for Demon Souls!
