PS3 can do splitscreen online multiplayer - Insomniac says

In an interview with Insomniac, PS3 Blog.net hammered the lack of splitscreen multiplayer in Resistance: Fall of Man, resulting in both interesting and hopeful answers.

On 1080p splitscreen v. 720p splitscreen, Rob Wyatt, Senior Engine Programmer had this to say;

Split screen is a difficult problem from a performance point of view and it is certainly more difficult from an engineering point of view than rendering 1920×1080. Both together, no doubt, requires a serious engineering effort but it's not impossible. As the PS3 hardware is better understood it will become easier. Rendering 1080 is more performance intensive than 720 simply because it has two and a quarter times as many pixels, which is not only more pixels to render but also more video memory and bandwidth is used for the bigger frame buffers... The combined overhead of the 1080 resolution with the extra polygon processing required for multiple viewports, while keeping in frame and not sacrificing AAA quality, is a very difficult problem. In the limited development time frame of a launch game there were bigger battles to fight but it's certainly possible and you will see split screen games running at 1080. For Resistance: Fall of Man, split screen with co-op play simply brought more to the table so 1080 support had to wait.

It's certainly possible! There's the hope.

On whether the PS3 is technically capable of supporting splitscreen play online (like Call of Duty 3 on the Xbox 360), Eric Ellis, Multiplayer Team Lead provided a more specific answer;

Splitscreen online play is certainly possible on the PS3. Resistance: Fall of Man did not implement this feature because as a launch title we had to make some compromises in the interest of time and that was a feature we didn't get the time to complete. However, I wouldn't rule out seeing it in future Insomniac games.

Eric Ellis was also able to provide insight into LAN play using the PS3, and while possible noted that those who are LANning most likely have internet access, and can play together via the Internet.

There we have it, the PS3 can do splitscreen online multiplayer. Expect to see it in Resistance: Fall of Man 2, maybe.

edit: sorry, some people think this post is about if ps3 can do online splitscreen....of course it can, but thats not what im getting at. Im just saying that RESISTANCE 2 might have ONLINE SPLITSCREEN =D. thanks

they both are gonna be really good games, however, i feel that for ME DMC4 will be more entertaining. by watching the videos, it just seems that DMC4 has more variety in gameplay with all the combos you can do to juggle all your enemies and such.......guns and swords, cant get any better. Graphically i think tht Ninja Gaiden 2 has the better graphics for sure, and the limbs falling off looks really awesome but i still think it wont have as much variety as with DMC. Another thing is that i love the cutscenes in DMC. The characters are not way to serious and can be pretty funny at times, and the moves they do (in the cutscenes)are pretty sick.

i am so glad that i didnt buy this game. man i didnt think that the game was gonna beTHIS bad...

- the framerate is effin terrible.it felt like i was playing an online game withall this lag. moving around actually gave me a headache....

- so many jaggies!!!

- graphics are just disgusting

i just cant believe this game was released in this condition....to be honest, if it was polished up, it could of been an awesome game with the big a** aliens and such, what a wasted opportunity.

try ninja gaiden sigma, its a really good game. However, depending on the difficulty, the "hack and slash" type gameplay wont work as much as you progress through the game

there have been many reports that Haze will have online splitscreen. I hope they are rightthe_crosbie

its just that there were also some reports starting that there was online splitscreen for UT3 as well, and there where some FAQs that stated splitscreen as well...so yea, i just want to know if there was solid confirmation from the developers itself.
