Well, it's been fun

I don't know how many of you are still around from the "old" Gamespot, but nevertheless it's been a fun ride, and I'm sorry to see it go.

It looks as if Gamespot has decided to get rid of the unions, and while I have to say I'm quite disappointed that this is happening, I can't say I'm really all that surprised. The unions have been rotting for the last 4 years or so, and instead of fixing them, Gamespot has decided to off all of us and our internet hangouts.

Am I leaving Gamespot? I guess I really left Gamespot a few years ago. I've had a lot of fun though, and met a lot of good friends. If any of you read this, I wish you the best in life, wherever that may take you.

It's been fun. Bye.

Game Update? Game Update!

I haven't blogged in a while, I normally have no time and nothing interesting to say, and Gamespot has seen better days as far as a community that blogs goes. But since I haven't done one in 6 months, and I have some stuff to say, I've decided to do one. I won't bore anyone with any personal life stuff; let's go straight to the games.

First off, let's get the crap out of the way. I preordered the collector's edition of Zelda Skyward Sword literally the week it was announced. Yesterday, I got an email from Amazon saying that it wouldn't even be shipping until like December 21 or something. Now normally I'd just cancel my preorder, order elsewhere, and call it a day. I can't do that this time though, as A) The game has blown up in price, like doubled, and B) they've already charged my account. I've come to expect more than this from amazon. All I know is if I don't get the Collector's Edition I'm going to be pissed.

Onto the good news. So far this seems to potentially be the greatest year for gaming this generation, which is a good thing since overall this generation has disappointed compared to others. All the games I've played so far (for the most part), have either been on par or superior to their predecessors. So far I've gotten:

  1. Gears of War 3: Haven't got to play it too much but what I have played seems great, MP much improved from 2
  2. Skyrim (PC): Absolutely awesome. Could be greatest ES game ever... Heck it has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever (though I won't say that for sure until I've 100%'ed it).
  3. Uncharted 3: Haven't gotten around to playing it yet, can't wait for Christmas break
  4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: It seems ok, not good though. Better than MW2, not better than COD4
  5. Batman Arkham City (PC): Haven't got to play it yet (pc version just came out today), although I already know it will be a solid game
  6. The King of Fighters XIII (PS3): This game has made me a VERY happy camper so far. It fully redeems any shortcomings XII had, and is superior to what I've played of the arcade version (anyone that knows me very well knows that me saying that about a console port is a big deal, as I am an arcade player first, pc player second, and console player third). I'm begging anyone who plays fighting games even a little bit to give it a shot... SNK and Atlus outdid themselves with this one and it deserves to be in your collection. I haven't played the game that much, as like Batman it's only been out for a day, but it has all the right pieces.

I also have Star Wars: The Old Republic down the pipeline. I thought I was going to be disappointed, but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the beta. Other games I want are Sonic Generations, Dark Souls, UMvC3, and maybe a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Right now I'd say Skyrim and KOFXIII are the two top contenders for GOTY, although after I get around to playing through everything that is subject to change.

Comments? What have you been playing and are looking forward to? What looks like it's going to be your GOTY? let me know! :)

Just a summer update

So I haven't done a true blog post in quite a long time, and since I've somewhat had a bit of a gaming resurgence since summer started I decided I'd post one and tell you all what I've been up to so far in my free time.

First and foremost, let me just say that I haven't bought a true, new game in over a year. Not counting my purchase of Super Mario All-Stars on wii 6 months ago, as it is not really new at all. The game I got before that can also be argued to be not new, and that would be Super Street Fighter IV over a year ago when it released. As far as a true full priced game goes, I honestly don't know how long it has been. It's kind of ironic, since I used to get virtually every new release that came out.

With that out of the way, I just wanted to say I've acquired quite a good bit of games in the last month or so and didn't really expect or even pay for almost any of them. hey just kind of fell into my possession. It's kind of strange, but pretty cool.

  • The first was this guy sold me his relatively new 360 Elite, along with Fable III, for $100. I was not expecting to buy another 360 any time soon, but I'm glad to upgrade from the launch model I was using.
  • The next games that I got, both randomly and for free, were Dark Cloud and Namco Musuem (PS). I haven't gotten around to playing DC yet, though I did play a little pacman on namco museum. I technically already have Namco Museum on Xbox and maybe a few other systems, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have this version either.
  • A little bit later I was given Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for free from a friend of mine. Did not expect this at all. On top of that I was given the PS2 version of Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection. I do have the Xbox version, but I've wanted the PS2 version for control purposes ever since the original Xbox's XBL went down.
  • Another friend also got me a copy of Twisted Metal 1 in its original longbox. I already had the rereleased TM1 in a jewel case, but its interesting to see the longbox version. It also happens to be my first longbox game period.
  • Strangest of all, a regular customer of where I work came in today and just straight up gave me a redeemable download code for Alan Wake. I honestly did not care all that much about this game, but then again I didn't really ask for the rest of this crap so I guess I don't mind.

It's kind of wierd because I almost never make impulse buys unless it's something I already considered getting at one point, and I NEVER get gifts. At least I won't be bored any time soon.

In response to my earlier statement of not buying any new games in a long time, I think I'm ready to start buying stuff again. The 3 games that are out that I've been wanting for quite some time are Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Dynasty Warriors 7. At this point, I think I'm going to end up dropping MK and MvC from that list, at least until they drop price; I have enough fighting games, and neither of them are necessarily groundbreaking.

The only game that is coming in the summer months (that I know of as of this pre-E3 typing, you never know what is gonna happen the week of E3) that I know for sure I want that's new is Super Street Fighter IV. Even though I have the first two on PS3, I'm considering buying this for 360. With the whole PSN outrage, along with my fancy new elite, I've decided I will be showing a good bit more love to my 360 collection, I might transition completely to 360 excluding PS3 exclusives. The local players in my town mostly play SF on 360, and I don't play fighting games with a pad anyway, so that's just even more of a reason.

Finally, I have been seriously contemplating importing a PS2 lately. There are many a game that I want that for some reason or another didn't come stateside, and now seems to be the perfect time to buy games are now old enough on the system so that they are relatively cheap, yet not so old that they've started to go back up in price. I'm considering buying some other things too though, so I don't know if I'll get this or not.

Games I'm looking forward to

Hey people, Unknown here, still suffocating under his work load. One month until freedom!

Anyway, I posted this in a union of mine and I figured I'd post it here to see what everyone else is looking forward to.

Here is the post:

So what games that are coming out in the next several months are you looking forward to? Also include any released titles you haven't gotten yet but would like to.

Not in any particular order

Just released/ Coming soon

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
It looks really interesting, has promising gameplay, and is ZELDA. No more explanation needed)
  2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS (3DS)
The game tied for my favorite game ever with redone graphics AND Master Quest? Sign me up!
  3. Pokemon Black/White (DS)
The Gen 5 Pokemon games look really refreshing, with all new pokemon and some new improvements. Looks like a bigger jump compared to last installments.Might wait for 3rd version, but will hopefully get eventually.
  4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC)
Like Zelda, it needs no explaining. It looks AMAZING, and I can't wait to sink a good 500 hours into it like I have with the others.
  5. Crysis 2 (PC)
I'm honestly not all that excited about this anymore. It seems like it's been consolised. That said, I loved the first, and PC games get cheap quick.
  6. Diablo III (PC)
Diablo II is one of my favorite PC games, and Diablo III looks like pure joy. Forget all the people saying they "screwed up" the art styIe, I think the game will turn out amazing like 99.999% of Blizzard's games.
  7. Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
For years if you asked me what my favorite game was, I'd probably say KOTOR (since it's release it has never been out of my top 5, and usually in my top 3). Couple that with my enjoyment of all things Bioware, Star Wars, and MMO's, and you've got a great game.
  8. Armored Core V (PS3)
AC5 looks really impressive so far. It seems like it'll be worth it.
  9. Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3)
I'm ashamed of myself for not yet buying this, considering I've bought ALL the other Warriors games on day one for almost a decade. It looks to be one of the best DW games ever.
  10. Samurai Warriors 3Z(PS3)/ Samurai Warriors 3 and 3XL (Wii)
Same boat as DW7, though I haven't yet decided which version(s) to get.
  11. Samurai Warriors 3DS (3DS)
It would probably be a good first 3DS game, I loved the early PSP DW
  12. Gears of War III (360)
Seems to have some improvements. I'm definitely ready to finish the fight... at least until the vastly superior prequel comes out.
  13. The King of Fighters XIII (PS3)
That is, if it ever actually comes out on console, seriously SNK! Anyway, It's vastly superior to XII, can't wait to play.
  14. Kid Icarus Uprising (3DS)
Don't know a whole lot about it but it looks promising.
  15. Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PS3)
Once again, I still can't believe I haven't so much as even played this one yet. My 10 year old self would surely slap me if he knew. Looks fun.
  16. Mega Man Legends 3 (3DS)
Its Mega Man... Mega man LEGENDS 3. nuff' said.
  17. Batman: Arkham City (PS3 or PC)
Absolutely adore the first game, and this one looks just as good.
  18. Duke Nukem Forever (PC)
    HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!

Past games that I want to get

  1. Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
I actually own this game, but can't seem to find it (though I can find the manual ) I've had a real itch to play it for the last several months.
  2. Metroid: Other M (Wii)
Never got around to picking this up, and still reeaallly want it.
  3. Rockman 8 (Saturn)
Yes, I already own this game... on 2 different systems. But I want a 3rd copy, because I'm obsessed like that. You can never have too much Mega Man.
  4. Metroid: Zero Mission & Metroid Fusion (GBA)
Played and loved both, but never got around to picking them up.
  5. Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection (PS3)
I used to own this, but then my PS3 blew up (not really) and since I game shared it I couldn't get it back. Now that the arcade I played it at has closed down, I really want my own copy. Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection> all other Tekken games, including Tag.
  6. Musou Orochi Z (PS3)
Yes, this is an import only compilation of two games I already own. Yes, I realize I played them both to the point of being burnt out and probably played #2 more than any game this gen, potentially ever (though I doubt it). Yes, GS gave the 2 games a 4. I don't care, I want this ultimate edition with extra content. Besides, we all know how reliable 360's are, so I only have so much time before I won't be able to play #2 any more.

Where are you Gamespot?

Seriously, what happened? I come back, the unions are so dead that they make how hey were in December seem healthy, and even the official GS boards have topics on the front page that haven't been posted into for 24 hours. Is everybody just hiding in some new, super cool subforum that I don't know about or what? :x

IT'S ALiVE!!!

Hello peoples, just a quick update.

I haven't left gamespot, it's just I wasn't kidding when I said I was super busy. I haven't posted here in almost 2 months, haven't played a game in 1 month, and completely forgot about a ton of games coming out that I would normally have had pre-ordered a month before it came out. Then again, it's kind of cool walking into a store and being shocked to see Marvel vs. Capcom 3 sitting on the shelf(which I still have not been able to play btw :x). I was also completely surprised when a friend mentioned Dynasty Warriors 7 coming out in a month and I barely knew it existed. Being a casual can bring such excitement! Too bad I wouldn't have the time to play them if I bought them .

So, this doesn't mean I'm becoming active again, just wanted to drop in and say hi. I should be a little free in a few weeks though, so maybe you'll see me posting then or we can play a game or something. I'm sure it'll be immensely fun, because unlike when I was buying a ton of games and not particularly having a whole lot of fun with them, I haven't touched a game in forever and it'll feel fresh. Anyways, I'll talk to you all later:D!

VGA's and 2011 in general

Holy crap. Elder Scrolls V and Mass Effect 3 revealed within the same hour. Couple this with awesome looking Uncharted 3 and Batman Arkham City footage and right now I feel like a fat kid in a candy store. Seriously, considering what the VGA's are and what games they show (they would never show off any game thats prequel wasn't ultra mega popular, much less a Japanese dev game there), the upcoming game reveals couldn't have been any better.

I know most people say this every year but I'm calling it. Mass Effect 3, The Old Republic, Zelda, Elder Scrolls V, Uncharted 3, MvC3, all of those awesome 3DS games, THE 3DS, Diablo III, Batman AC, Armored Core 5, Duke Nukem Forever, Gears 3, and who knows what else: 2011 will be the greatest year for gaming of this generation.

Now please excuse me while I go lie down and take in all the awesomeness of Elder Scrolls V and Mass Effect 3

Where am I? 0_o

Been wondering where I've been?

No I'm not dead, and no I did not leave Gamespot. I'm just really busy is all (my work week is about 80 hours, opposed to the normal 40 hours).

I'm not in financial trouble or anything, I just have a very demanding job, and will continue to have this indefinitely.

Sorry if I let any of my unions down with my extreme lack of activity, but there's nothing I can do about it. If you want to demote me I'll understand, if not, awesome.

I'll post when I can, but there's no way I can post daily, maybe even weekly.

Thanks for reading.

Sega Astro City or new Gaming PC? I can't decide!

So yeah, as the topic says. I have been planning on getting a new pc for a while (as my current rig is pretty crappy) but recently I have found a pretty good deal on an Arcade Cabinet called a Sega Astro City. If I get one, I won't have the money for the other and vice versa. Each has it's pros and cons for buying over the other, which I will list below.

  • My current PC's Specs are pretty crappy. It's to the point where I own quite a few games that I can't even play on it. If I want to play those (crysis, Far cry 2, bioshock, etc.) I have to play them on a pc besides my own, which I've actually done a few times.
  • At the same time pc support is not like it used to be. Very few exclusive new PC games come out that push hardware to the limit. So paying $1000 now for a Great Behemoth of a PC sounds a little pointless, especially since it'll be outdated in 2-3 years. I might as well wait another 6 months and buy a $600 PC that will still be able to play all games at high settings, at least at modest resolutions and FPS in 2D that is (which I'm ok with, no need to run a game at a higher res than my monitor/tv can output and in 3D while at 120FPS)
  • I don't have a ton of space, finding space for a cab will be difficult. Also I've been looking for another cab called a Super Neo 29 for a while now, and I'd rather have it than an Astro City. If I were to get this, I won't be getting the Super Neo 29.
  • The cab is in very good condition, and at it's price is a steal. On top of that I can still get a good PC upgrade with the money left over.
  • Arcade games cost a lot. A LOT. I have a few, but in order to play those I'd have to rewire the cabs insides(as What I have is for neo geo, and this is hooked up for JAMMA). It wouldn't be too difficult, but it's a pain nevertheless. On top of that I already have most arcade games I would play in some other version on console. And since I already have 3 sticks, it's not like I have the plus of better control.
  • It would be pretty awesome to have an arcade machine at my house.

I had links to descriptions/pics of Sega Astro City's and Super Neo 29's, But GlitchSpot won't let me use them, so if you don't know what they are and want to see them you'll have to look them up on your own

Tell me what you think. I could use the suggestions!

E3 2010 Conference Impressions

E3 is over. Some of the conferences were good and some weren't. Here are my impressions of each. I'll start with ubi and EA since they aren't part of the big 3.

1. Ubisoft had one of the worst, most bizarre conferences I've seen. First off, 2 of their "games" weren't even video games. One was laser tag with stat tracking software, and the other was just software. As for the rest of the games that I can remember (not many were all that memorable):

  • Shaun White Skateboarding didn't look "bad", but It's nothing I'd play.
  • I'm glad Rayman is back but the way they presented it confused me. Is Rayman just a game that's premade in their game making game? Or is it it's own thing? Kind of confusing.
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier looked good to me, and was the only thing that looked good from Ubisoft. I'll probably get this.
  • The Assassins Creed game looked like it should have been a AC2 expansion instead of a full game.

2. EA had a very nice showing at E3 this year. There were some nice titles.

  • Need For Speed Hot Pursuit: I'm glad there is a new nfs coming to the market that looks like it's actually a quality title. I like the other hot pursuit games and this looks to live up to those.
  • Dead Space 2: It looked good, though it's nothing I'd normally play. That being said they are releasing the PS3 version with Dead Space Extraction so I might pick it up. I didn't get to play Extraction on the wii.
  • Medal of Honor: meh, I guess it looks good for people that like this style shooter, and it definitely looks better than COD Black Ops. I won't be getting it though.
  • EA MMA: I don't care anything for the game itself, but the "EA Live Broadcast" feature looks very impressive to me. I hope to see it implemented into future games
  • EA Active: This game looks impressive to me. I think it looks to me like it will be the best in the fitness genre. That being said I won't get it, as I'd rather not have my gaming area smell :P.
  • Sims 3: I'm glad this game is coming to console. I liked the pc version and I know a few people who only own consoles and want to play this. Once again though, it's not a game I will be getting.
  • Crysis 2: While I did like what I saw of Crysis 2, I'm kind of disapointed they didn't show the pc version. While the 360 version did look good from the video we saw, Crysis 1 still looks better than that.
  • Bullet Storm: Meh, some parts looked ok but it's nothing all that special. Epic's quality has been slipping lately :(
  • Star Wars the Old Republic: While the cg video EA showed at the conference did look impressive, I was much more impressed with the gameplay shown at the E3 show floor. This game will be a day one purchase for me :D.

Now on to the big 3.

1. Microsoft: I did not like Microsoft's conference. There was not a single exclusive that impressed me. I have not had a reason to turn my 360 on in a while and it seems like I won't have a reason to for some time :(. Any way as for the games themselves:

  • MS Kinect: I was VERY unimpressed with this. It's like the wii's shovelware and the PS2's PS eye had a baby who was born with a mental disorder. I'm sure it'll bomb as the casuals have this already, and there's nothing to offer gamers. And don't even get me started on the little girl and "Skittles" her cat made out of pixels . I wouldn't buy this trash if it came with every game announced for it and they were charging $40.
  • Halo Reach: It looks ok, better than Halo 3 at least. While I wouldn't buy it, I probably will just because all my irl friends will bug me to.
  • Gears 3: I guess it looks good, but it looks like more of the same. Might get this when it gets cheap, but not when it comes out.
  • COD Black Ops: Honestly? It looked like trash. I really couldn't care less about it having exclusive content with 360. In fact I'd prefer it because it'll keep the little kids and frat boys off PSN.
  • Metal Gear Solid Rising: It looked good, though a little strange for a Metal Gear title. I'll probably buy this, though it won't be day 1. And to MS's dismay, it'll be on my PS3.
  • 360 Slim: Don't know what I feel about this yet. It looks like a bashed in Alienware. Either way I won't be getting this as I already have 2 360's. Hopefully it doesn't have the same hardware problems as the original 360.

2. Nintendo: Nintendo had one of the best conferences I've ever seen. Most of the things they showed could have been E3 winners by themselves, yet they threw them out back to back. I expected a bunch of graphs, casual titles, some Zelda gameplay, the 3DS to be revealed with 1 or 2 games shown, and then 1 new good game to be revealed. We got so much more.

  • Zelda Skyward Sword: I thought Zelda looked impressive. My only complaint is that the graphics are like a halfway point between realistic and cartoony; I wish they would have just gone one way or the other. Either way it's a day 1 must buy.
  • Mario Sports Mix: At first I expected it would be just another Mario Sports tile; good but not necessarily worth a buy. This looks to be more than that though, as it has a ton of sports instead of just one. I may or may not get this, haven't decided yet.
  • Golden Sun Dark Dawn: I think it looks really good. I'll get this when it comes out.
  • Golden Eye: The game gave me mixed feelings. I'm sure the game will be good gameplay wise if it sticks with the first's level design and gunplay style. That being said the graphics look subpar even for the wii, and I'm not too trusting of Activision. Whether I get this or not I haven't decided, but I will be keeping my eye on it.
  • Epic Mickey: I thought Epic Mickey looked good. Day 1 buy.
  • Kirby Epic yarn: I think this game looks beautiful. I love the other Kirby games and this looks to be the best yet. Day 1 buy.
  • Dragon Quest IX: I'll probably get this. I liked the other DQ games I've played and this looks good as well.
  • Metroid Other M: Boy did I like the trailer they showed at E3. I absolutely love the Metroid Series and this looks to be VERY good. Day 1 buy, and I'll take 5 .
  • Donky Kong: I gotta say it looked awesome. While I thought DK64 was good, I've always thought the 2D DK styIe was superior to the 3D styIe and I'm glad they are going with it. Another day 1 must buy from our friends at Nintendo.
  • Nintendo 3DS: The 3DS looks plain awesome. It has a ton of good games down the pipe, and looks like it will be the greatest portable ever made. Kid Icarus looks awesome, as does Star Fox, Zelda, Pilot Wings, Metal Gear, RE, and even more. I will be getting this system and a ton of games at launch.

3. Sony: While Sony had good games at their conference, I thought the conference itself was boring. It had too many speaches on 3D and too many montages when they should've focused on gameplay.

  • Killzone 3: Graphically KZ looks stunning, though I've never been a big fan of it's gameplay or story. Pass.
  • PS Move: Unimpressive for the most part. That being said it does have potential and I'll probably get it eventually.
  • Sorcery: It looked ok, but nothing I'd buy the move for. Might pick up in a bargain bin someday but pass for now.
  • Heroes on the Move: I like the concept but they should've shown more on it. I don't know whether I'll get this or not.
  • Time Crisis: This is a move game I can get behind. It has multiple games in it and looks impressive. It's not a PS Move seller but if I ever get the PS Move this will be a must buy
  • GOW Ghost of Sparta: Honestly it doesn't look all that interesting, just more of the same. Maybe I'll get it in a bargain bin one day but a pass for now.
  • The 3rd Birthday: I've always liked the Parasite Eve games and this looks great. I will be buying this one.
  • KH Birth by Sleep: I like KH, so I'll get this one eventually.
  • Portal 2: Why is gabe on sony's stage? He better have a bullet proof vest on or he's gonna get popped :o. Anyway I'll probably get Portal... on my pc.
  • Motorstorm Apocalypse: I wish they showed more of this, but from what i saw it looked impressive. I might buy it.
  • Gran Turismo 5: I didn't like the clip they showed, yet I think the game itself looks very good. I'll get this one eventually, though it might not be a day 1.
  • Twisted Metal: YEAHH :D :D :D! I love TM and this looks to be by far the best. Another day one purchase.

So that's my thoughts on this years E3. Here are my awards

Best 1st party Conference: Nintendo

Best 3rd party Conference: EA
Best hardware: Nintendo 3DS

Game of show: It's pretty close, but I'll go with Kid Icarus
