My Devil May Cry Binge

I am not ashamed at all to say that I totally went all out with my Devil May Cry Binge for the last two months. If I wasn't playing Devil May Cry I was reading about it in my player's guide. If I wasn't reading about it, I'd be watching the animated TV series on Netflix... I love my Wii. Anyway, 35 hours later I've final finished Devil May Cry for the Playstation 2, and I am one satisfied gamer. I want to especially give praise to Shonna for buying this game for me as a Christmas gift along with the player's guide, which were both extremelyuseful. Thank you so much, and enjoy my review. I love you all.

P.S. Even though the animated series isn't always congruent with the actual games, and chronologically it doesn't make sense, I love the fact that Dante's weapons are powerless against humans. That they can only be effective against demons is just one of the many things that makes Dante so incredibly cool. Again this is not mentioned in the game, only the Animated Series.

For You Shonna

I lov eyou

Dear Shonna,

I don't care if anyone else even glances at this review. This is our game, and I wrote it for you. Please let me know what you think and if anything needs to be changed. It was a difficult review to write simply because I loved playing it so much with you that it was hard not to be biased. But I tried to be as fair as possible. Please comment.

Love,

Aaron

New Eternal Darkness Review!

Eternal Darkness

Note to Shonna:

This review may confuse you, because I said that I bought Eternal Darkness right after finishing Resident Evil 4 back in 2007, which is true. What I didn't mention is that when I went through my "super christian" period, I got rid of the game, and didn't buy it back until a week before you had your spring break. I had completed half of it before, and I really missed it. So I bought it to finish the story and then planned to return it to the store before the 7 day refund policy ran out. That was an epic fail. I just wanted to clarify, since you were with me at Gameking.

If first-person shooters are heavy metal, then Flower is Enya!

Flower

I can not believe my eyes and ears and hands! I heard about the game Flower from IGN for the PS3, so I decided to download a free demo off the playstation network, and I'm completely blown away! This the Enya of video games. This is the greatest form of beauty, art, music, and innovation I've ever seen in a single game. First off, I'm not a fan of motion control games (ex. Wii Sports), so I was blown away--sorry, no pun intended--by the sensitivity that the montion controls in a regular PS3 controller have. Plus the game is just beautiful to look at. It's almost, dare I say it, spiritual. Like I'm seeing a little piece of heaven or paradise or whatever you want to call your haven. The music is seamlessly integrated into the gameplay, which is incredibly well done. Anyway, if there was anytime that I wish I had money to buy a game it is now, and I'm definitely going to invest in downloading this title ASAP.

***Note to Shonna***

I can't wait to show you this demo on my PS3, Shonna! It's incredibly well done. I'll see you in 2 days.

I want to write about Manny Calavera!

Grim Fandango

You have no idea how badly I want to write about this game. It's simply one of the "Greatest Games of All Time" without any question. But I know that as soon as I start writing about it, I won't be able to stop. I'm working 12 hour shifts right now in an effort to make ends meet, so I haven't had time at all this week. But this is my approaching goal for the coming days. I'm super excited, because I beat this game twice in a row, back to back, with in a time span of 2 weeks. I have not done that with any game before.

(Revised) Justin Calvert, Please forgive me.

Senior Editor of Gamespot

Anyone who has been on Gamespot long enough is aware that Justin Calvert is the Senior Editor of the website. He has been with Gamespot since April, 2000 and has been a driving force in the success of gaming journalism. However, he also is the journalist and critic that I have had the most disagreements with concerning gaming (of course, not to his face).

Side Note: Even though I recently became a member of Gamespot last summer I've been following Gamespot since Greg Kasavin did his Resident Evil 4 review on the Nintendo Gamecube back in 2005. Growing up in Kenya, East Africa, I had the slowest possible internet connection you can imagine, so I would leave the computer on all night, just so I could watch Greg work his magic the next morning. I still miss him very much.

The controversy I had with Mr. Calvert was over him giving Grand Theft Auto IV a "10" and then saying that it was not perfect during the review. I was under the impression that "10" meant that the game was perfect. I thought this because I have been religiously following Gamespot's Greatest Games of All Time list, in which The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is subtitled, "Gamespot's First Perfect 10!" This was misleading to me, because I assumed that "10" was "Perfect!" Because of this I used the GTA IV review as a means of blasting Mr. Calvert's critique on the 1994 sim Sensible World of Soccer for the Amiga. I claimed that he was incompetent as a critic, and that he should step down from his position at Gamespot. I went back to my review of the Sensible World of Soccer and realized how harsh I was being on Mr. Calvert, so I decided to write him an e-mail in an effort to understand his review on GTA IV's "perfect 10." I wanted to see how he would defend his review.

Needless to say, he blew me out of the water...but respectfully and in good taste. He explained to me that "10" does not mean "Perfect," but instead it represents "Prime." It is perfect only in the sense that it is perfect for the genre. This made me step back and rethink about everything that I've written about gaming, and I realized, "I'm the one being incompetent" not Justin Calvert. So for that, Mr. Calvert, I give you my sincere apologies for writing negatively about you and attacking you as a reviewer. I still respect you and your opinions. I am sorry.

Your friend,

Aaron Renfroe

P.S. Nothing personal, but I still think that Sensible World of Soccer is the worst soccer game ever, but each to his own, right?

Wiserat4: The Doom Hater

Doom

I don't really hate Doom at all, but evidently some users tend to think I do. I just think its kind of funny how out of all the reviews I've written this seems to have been the most controversial as there continues to be a growing number of people who don't like my opinion on this one at all. So here's my challenge: if anyone can convince me why this game is so great, I will change my review. But honestly, I'm a huge Quake fan, and Doom doesn't even compare to Quake though they are a similar format. Both run on DOS. Both were developed by id Software, yet Quake is tremendously more entertaining then Doom. And before you go rambling about how revolutionary Doom is, lets not forget that Wolfstein 3D was the first FPS of the genre, not Doom. Alright, so hit me with your best shot.

Finally! My BioShock Review

Bioshock

This has been one of the most frustrating reviews to write, because there just wasn't enough time to write about everything that I wanted to cover. On top of all this, mom kept demanding the computer during the middle of my writing, which usually resulted in her accidentally deleting my work. Fortunately, I copy and pasted half of what I had written, but I was struggling to remember the other half. Despite all the sweat, blood, and tears, I've finally finished the article, so enjoy. And thanks for reading (especially you, Shonna, I love you.)
