Anyone who has been on Gamespot long enough is aware that Justin Calvert is the Senior Editor of the website. He has been with Gamespot since April, 2000 and has been a driving force in the success of gaming journalism. However, he also is the journalist and critic that I have had the most disagreements with concerning gaming (of course, not to his face).
Side Note: Even though I recently became a member of Gamespot last summer I've been following Gamespot since Greg Kasavin did his Resident Evil 4 review on the Nintendo Gamecube back in 2005. Growing up in Kenya, East Africa, I had the slowest possible internet connection you can imagine, so I would leave the computer on all night, just so I could watch Greg work his magic the next morning. I still miss him very much.
The controversy I had with Mr. Calvert was over him giving Grand Theft Auto IV a "10" and then saying that it was not perfect during the review. I was under the impression that "10" meant that the game was perfect. I thought this because I have been religiously following Gamespot's Greatest Games of All Time list, in which The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is subtitled, "Gamespot's First Perfect 10!" This was misleading to me, because I assumed that "10" was "Perfect!" Because of this I used the GTA IV review as a means of blasting Mr. Calvert's critique on the 1994 sim Sensible World of Soccer for the Amiga. I claimed that he was incompetent as a critic, and that he should step down from his position at Gamespot. I went back to my review of the Sensible World of Soccer and realized how harsh I was being on Mr. Calvert, so I decided to write him an e-mail in an effort to understand his review on GTA IV's "perfect 10." I wanted to see how he would defend his review.
Needless to say, he blew me out of the water...but respectfully and in good taste. He explained to me that "10" does not mean "Perfect," but instead it represents "Prime." It is perfect only in the sense that it is perfect for the genre. This made me step back and rethink about everything that I've written about gaming, and I realized, "I'm the one being incompetent" not Justin Calvert. So for that, Mr. Calvert, I give you my sincere apologies for writing negatively about you and attacking you as a reviewer. I still respect you and your opinions. I am sorry.
Your friend,
Aaron Renfroe
P.S. Nothing personal, but I still think that Sensible World of Soccer is the worst soccer game ever, but each to his own, right?
