Everything is relative. Compared to the other aspects that make a game good graphics realy dont matter. They can enhance a game but any game that relies solely on them sucks.
WoW has a huge playerbase that will shrink and grow again over time. Still you wont be able to intaeract with all those players as the game is divided into servers. Find yourself a High Pop server (the older the better as it is well established and will have plenty of people).
You have to remember that starting areas wil be mostly empty as most people have high lvl charectors by now. Likewise there are only 2 popular starting areas (1 for Horde 1 for Alliance) so if your friend started his charect in one of the unpopular ones of course there wont be anyone there.
As for asking people to help you choose everyone will tell you to go to the game they are currently playing. Look around, try it out for free and see if you like it. Its really hard to judge the end game when you first start, and in WoW the endgame really IS the game but it will give you an idea.
The Withcer is actually a fantastic game. If you find collecting tons of items rewarding then it is certainly not the game for you, however a great story, many descisions, memorable charcetors, and a very balanced feel make this a truly GREAT RPG. And btw there is a demo of it out, should have tried that to see if you would like it or not.
It used to be WoW before battlegrounds killed world PvP. Since those days Blizz has been trying hard to balance and finetune it but its just not possible really. Hope they have more luck in WoS.
