for gaming and media would it be worth my time to upgrade from a C2Q 2.4ghz to a i3-3220? the upgrade isnt going to cost me alot cause im getting the parts 2nd hand. but is it worth my time? would i notice any improvements

when i use my computer on my RCA 42 inch tv with HDMI on 1080p, it doesnt fit the screen right, none of the resolutions do, is there a way i can adjust this, video card is evga gtx 480
