@swimbearuk:

I think Splatoon and Arms are excellent of examples of what you are looking for! These are two new and exciting franchises on Nintendo platforms that seem fantastic.

Maybe there are more titles like this to come? Maybe Retro Studios is working on some sort of new IP?

I think we have to consider that Nintendo can't satisfy everyone's wants to the fullest. They are working with limited resources and a lot of those resources are always going to be going towards established franchises that many fans demand to play. They are certainly making efforts to create new winning franchises, as I mentioned Arms and Splatoon above as good examples.

It's very challenging to create a new franchise that resonates with fans. It's expensive and risky business. I think Nintendo is doing a good job of balancing their risks now-a-days. SnipperClips, 1-2 Switch, Arms, Splatoon, etc are great examples of fun new IP. They have also stated there is more on the way so that's exciting. You also have Suma51 working on something and I think Platinum might be working on something along the lines of Bayonetta as well.

It seems to me Nintendo is answering your call when it comes to bringing out new IP. I get that you want more and more, but that's a tough order to fill for a first party company like Nintendo. They put out a lot of quality software as it is and are arguably one of the best developers on the planet. This is kind of why you actually do want games like Red Dead Redemption 2 to make it to Switch...maybe you would rather play them elsewhere, but their presence is a sign of a healthy platform environment and can help expand the user base therefore attracting more potential releases on the system. It's win-win.

I feel you on this. I do think we will see another Mario Kart on Switch.

I think Nintendo burned themselves with the Wii U. It really didn't resonate with people. I think Nintendo, with their limited resources, is trying to put together a compelling pipeline of games to give Switch some momentum. With all their other projects in the works, I just don't think Mario Kart 9 was going to happen near the launch date so they revamped MKart 8.

I didn't own a Wii U because I didn't think it was a good console so Mario Kart 8 is new to me. AND...it's portable, which is amazingly fun. I get why you're a bit disappointed by it...that makes sense to me, but really, I think you'll get the sequel you're looking for down the road for sure!

@swimbearuk You make really good points here and I hope Nintendo is able to attract some great third party content. I don't think we'll see games like Red Dead Redemption 2, but there will certainly be less technically intensive 3rd party efforts that hopefully find their way to Switch. There is more than enough horsepower inside of Switch for any developer to produce a game that is beautiful, epic in scale, and is an incredible gaming experience so the doors are open to that possibility. It also seems like Switch is going to have a hefty install base. My opinion is that Switch is the best console concept out there right now...I truly think it's fantastic. It's powerful and portable and you can play it anywhere....perfect!

@WolfenMcGunz I think they are so different in terms of genre that I would avoid comparing them. You may like one of them more than the other, but it becomes really difficult to compare games when they aren't in the same genre.:

@beantownsean I don't know if I'd say the Switch has launched 'bare bones' and I'm not sure that is the reason Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is being sold at full-retail price. It's certainly fair to say the Switch doesn't have a huge launch lineup in terms of numbers, but Zelda Breath of the Wild packs quite a wallop and would overshadow any other game that tried to release during the Switch launch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also more than just touch-ups. It's packed with all the DLC, the Battle Modes have been overhauled, and there are more characters and tracks than the original MK8. In terms of quality of gaming and the content, it's arguably a better value than most games.

I think you're misrepresenting the Switch by calling it a handheld? It's both portable and a home console. That's why it's so compelling.

My best guess is you need not look further than the Mushroom Kingdom to find that drug. Oh. And they have also worked insanely hard at their craft for decades and have some of the most dedicated developers on the planet!

I can't wait to try out Splatoon 2! I never played the original, but was always interested in it. I just refused to buy a Wii U because it wasn't compelling. The Switch changes everything though. What a great concept and great machine! And now I finally get to paint the town! Bring it Splatoon 2!!!

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is going to be there for a while. This is the best game of this generation and arguably the greatest adventure game ever created. The Switch is a perfectly balanced concept. It delivers enough tech power and then you have Zelda BOTW that provides proof that game design, not teraflops, are what truly matter. Nintendo messed up with the Wii U, but has bounced back beautifully with the Switch and their upcoming pipeline of great software! What a comeback!
