I blame the fact that (from my perspective at least) the industryseems to just berehashing old ideas into HD and adding a bunch of cinematic crap. Designers now seem to put more emphasis on story progression than gameplay, fun,or challenge. I don't mean to offend anyone here (although I probably will), but stories that involve wizards, aliens,and zombies as well as a protagonist that must kill hundreds of foes on his way to saving the world really will never have much appeal beyond kids and geeks. That's not to say that games shouldn't involve those things, but the focus has to be on the making the game fun and challenging, not the crap story.
I think the franchise was hurt by TSFP. I think they would've been better off focussing more on what made TS2 so great ... multiplayer (splitscreen), fast gameplay (framerate), more game modes and customization (challenges and assault), and mapmaker (without bugs). I think the single player story mode was a just a distraction for the developers and in the endhad a "me too" feel to it.
