Ahsoka Review - For Star Wars: Rebels Fans Only

Phil Owen on Google+

If you don't already care about Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren, this show probably isn't for you.

I used to think I was unreasonably harsh on Disney's attempts at live-action Star Wars because I didn't like any of it. Then I watched Andor and saw what a legitimately good Star Wars TV show looked like. I'd rather not go back to the old normal. But despite its attempts to pretend otherwise in the two episodes provided by Disney+ ahead of the series premiere, the old normal is exactly what Ahsoka represents. Unless you're a Rebels fan dying to follow up on that cliffhanger from the series finale, there's no reason to watch this show.

Ahsoka begins with a pair of villainous Force users--Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati--invading a New Republic Cruiser to rescue a one-off villain from Season 2 of The Mandalorian named Morgan Elsbeth. As we learned back then, Elsbeth knows something about the location of the missing Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, and they imply that somebody (it's not said who) paid these Force-wielders to rescue Elsbeth and help with her quest to bring him back.

Coincidentally, in the very next scene we see Ahsoka Tano reenact the opening credits of Guardians of the Galaxy, but more boringly and without dancing--she visits some kind of ancient archaeological site in the middle of nowhere on some nothing planet to recover a magical orb, after which she is immediately confronted by and has to fight some baddies who work for the main villain. This orb contains the map to Thrawn, who may or may not be in a different galaxy. So Ahsoka reconvenes with surviving characters from Rebels, Hera Syndulla, and Sabine Wren, and the race to Thrawn is on.

Are you lost yet? If you didn't watch Star Wars: Rebels, which saw the genius Thrawn and protagonist Ezra Bridger pulled into hyperspace toward an unknown destination by space whales, you probably are. Ahsoka is a direct follow-up on that animated series' cliffhanger ending--it's basically Rebels Season 5--and the result is that the two episodes I've seen don't have much to offer fans who didn't watch that cartoon.

No Caption Provided

These first two episodes--which were directed by showrunner Dave Filoni, who also was responsible for the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons--make an attempt to ape Andor's slower pace by, as far as I can tell, simply holding shots longer. But it doesn't work. These episodes end up having no rhythm to speak of, as every scene is filled with extraneous pauses--Ahsoka has all the flow of Attack of the Clones.

The look of it isn't much better, with a series of action sequences that all look basically like the maligned final battle from Marvel's Secret Invasion series--the camera is always far too close to the action to get a good look at what's going on, and the fights are inexplicably inert. It's hard to believe that we've gotten to the point where I groan when it's time for a lightsaber battle, but that's the reality of the situation here.

To make it all the worse, you can feel some of the more cartoony DNA of Rebels seeping into the whole production. We've got Ahsoka doing comical spin moves to cut holes in the floor during a fight like she's Bugs Bunny. One of the bad guys is a former Inquisitor named Marrock who has one of those spinny lightsaber handles that those folks used on Rebels, and he got it spinning really fast and then threw it like a boomerang--it didn't look awesome. And near the end of the second episode, Hera Syndulla is chasing a bad guy ship and asks her astromech droid to prepare a tracking device--this droid, seated on the outside of the ship like R2-D2, starts rummaging through a pile of things that are just sitting there freely on the surface of this ship like it's a desk while Hera is doing all sorts of combat maneuvers. Eventually, it finds the tracker, and then physically throws it with its pincer arm. Maybe you can get away with this in an animated series that's inherently less grounded in reality, but in live-action, this was just embarrassing to watch.

But hey, it could be worse: They could have Marrock use his lightsaber like a helicopter blade and fly around with it, which the Inquisitors did on Rebels. But there are still six more episodes to go, so don't count it out.

No Caption Provided

What's really frustrating here is that if you strip away all the previous story baggage and the characters that this show assumes we already like, there's a potentially very interesting large-scale story happening here that could take us someplace new. Ahsoka and pals racing some free agent Imperials and mercenary Force users on a grand galaxy-spanning quest to solve a cool mystery that might actually take us beyond the scope of Star Wars as we know it? And we've got folks like Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the late, great Ray Stevenson chewing the scenery? That sounds like it could be fun.

Right now, though, all that fun stuff is obscured by, well, that story baggage and these characters the show assumes we already like. Hopefully that dynamic will change as this series continues--as we saw with The Mandalorian Season 3 earlier this year, the quality of these Disney+ Star Wars series can vary dramatically from week to week. And after this very rough start, Ahsoka could use one of those dramatic quality shifts right about now.

The Good

  • This cast could be great
  • There's a potentially interesting core mystery

The Bad

  • Inert, unenergetic filmmaking
  • If you didn't watch and love Rebels, this show isn't for you

I thought it was OK, if nothing else. I have to admit I felt kinda lost not having seen the animated shows.

I haven’t watched rebels at all so I’ll comeback after I watch this and give my take.

But Gamespot out here reviewing movies after it can’t even give games a fair shake by being biased and scoring based off outside influence (see Hogwarts legacy, a great game, GAME! not trans issues)

@shalomanoray: Hogwarts wasn’t a great game though. It was another Ubisoft open world game with a Harry Potter skin. Everything outside the main quest’s larger missions was just filler. And there was little attempt to make your character feel like an actual student.

Hogwarts Legacy could have been so much cooler if they’d patterned it after Bully instead of Assassin’s Creed.

@mogan: see you say this, but then also give all your Ubisoft assassin creed games 8’s and 9’s.

And side note; Diablo IV an 8?! Tsk tsk.

@shalomanoray: I don’t give all the AC games 8s and 9s. Various GameSpot reviewers might, but I don’t think I’d give the last couple AC games more than a 6, and that’s the most I’d give Hogwarts too, unfortunately.

I think it is time Gamespot admitted it has lost its power to review anything.

First two episodes were great. Gamespot showing its wokeness once again.

I'm not sure how the reviewer arrived at this. Ahsoka wasn't even in the feature films, was she? So unless you were invested further than that, you wouldn't even know who Ahsoka even was. So what are we complaining about? It's like saying that I'm upset that the Golden Girls was all about these old ladies and Luke Skywalker wasn't in it at all!

@crazknuk: The first two episodes don't really do much to introduce the characters and keeps emphasizing the importance of people/things/events it doesn't really explain because the show expects you to already know who and what all this stuff is.

It's not unwatchable or anything, but as somebody who didn't watch Rebels, it did impact my enjoyment of the show.

2? - This review reads like an angry fanboy lol. You complain it isn't for people who haven't seen Rebels and yet you seem to know all about Rebels so you have obviously seen it, so can't really give that opinion. People I know haven't seen Rebels and yet managed to work out the introductory plot and enjoyed it. I enjoyed the amazing visuals and sfx and subtle new star wars locations brought to life. I'm just glad they didn't cram loads of references and creatures and fights and all the other things they could have done. If this was a 2, I'm sure you must have rated Boba Fett a -12. Slow is sometimes good.

The CNN review has the same reservations but is much more positive - it's too slow, but it has some cool stuff. I was going to check this out but am spending time on Dark Winds and Winning Time S2. But maybe it gets better over the season. 2 seems too low. A 2 is something that is unwatchable - like, you get angry, turn it off after ten minutes, and feel resentful all day.

Just watched the first two episodes. I thought they did quite well. Yes it caters to people who are more invested in Star Wars and who know who Ahsoka is, as well as being familiar with Rebels, and that is completely fine.

For someone completely new to all things Star Wars, it probably is not the best place to start with.

I look forward to seeing where they go from here.

You do realize that in reviewing these series it doesn't have to be on a pass/fail grading system? There are scores between 2 and 10, right?

I have not watched Rebels but I'm hoping that the writers within this series will fill in the missing pieces I need to appreciate it by the end. If not, then fine, one can downgrade the complete series, but we've only seen 2 of the expected 8. But till then, your review should be an episode by episode review with no score (or episode specific one) till the final end.

It's funny that on the gaming side of Gamespot they usually give a score after finishing the game, otherwise they write an Impression article and not a review. Maybe that rule should be followed on the Series side of things?

After two episodes I can now say what I already knew, this review is the worse crap I remember see in a long time. This guy has serious problems with this serie...

oh... "For Star Wars: Rebels Fans Only"... Funny, I loved the first two episodes (almost a movie), I´m invested in the story, and I never saw rebels...What a sequence of mistakes in such a statement... LOL

I think this review is overly harsh. Yes, the live action shows so far have been hit or miss (miss: Boba Fett, Mandalorian S3, Kenobi, missing others but those were terrible)

I didn’t watch Rebels at all. I’m able to follow what’s going on, and I thought this show in the first 2 episodes is pretty darn good. Star Wars shows are seemingly never going to be for everyone. There’s always someone waiting to complain even before the show is out.

Maybe a 2 is too harsh, but I agree with the sentiment. I thought this was an embarrassingly dull, lifeless, amateurish production on pretty much every front. It doesn't even nail the basics - every character interaction feels stilted and awkward, there is no consistent rhythm, no interesting framing, and flat and lifeless cinematography. The action scenes are poorly shot and choreographed, with no energy or sense of danger, the acting is stiff and one-note...overall it looks and feels like big budget fan fiction. Filoni might be a hugely talented guy overall but based on this, he is not a great or even a competent live-action filmmaker. I'm a lifelong SW fan who works in video as a career largely because of my love for SW, and I can't even bring myself to watch the 2nd episode.

If I was entirely paranoid, I'd say they gave this a 2/10 purely to increase traffic on the this article. While the show is not perfect by any margin, on what planet in the Milky Way galaxy is it deserving of a 2? lol. A 2 means something almost as bad as pressing the play button and all you get is a blank screen. This was not that and anyone with a molecule of objectivity should be able to see that.

This is a show obviously catering towards people who watched the Rebels animation, which I did and liked. But there's plenty of good stuff here to go with the complaints.

The visuals are very well done. The locations are diverse and interesting and Lothal look as good as we could've hoped, in my opinion. I'll be the first to admit Rosario has the resting b**ch face throughout most of the 2 episodes, but maybe she was told to play it detached. The fights in the first episode weren't very good but we got a much better fight in episode 2. We can only hope it continues to improve in the next episodes. The story and motivation of the villains (besides Thrawn related stuff) was genuinely intriguing in my opinion.

Last and foremost, I enjoyed these two episode more than 90% of Obi Wan and 100% of Boba Fett, and not just because I was familiar with the characters from the animation. None of the episodes from those shows was graced with a 2/10 though, which shows there's little objectivity to be had in these reviews.

RIP Ray Stevenson.

Characters in this show spend a lot of time giving little knowing smiles that, I assume, mean something to Rebels fans. It's not a great replacement for character development though. Hera and Ahsoka are pretty boring because this show expects viewers to already know their whole deal and so doesn't do much in the way of establishing who these people are and why I should like them. Sabine is the only one who feels like they've got an arc here ... which makes all her knowing smiles weird because her arc appears to be that she doesn't actually know as much as she thinks and needs to learn from her mistakes.

The main plot is interesting enough, but the characters are kind of bland. As much as this is a continuation of the Rebels' story, it's also its own show and new entry point for viewers, so I think it would benefit from building up who these characters are more. Especially since this is the first live action outing for most of them. Even though its writing isn't so overtly lazy and stupid as Obi-Wan's or Book of Boba Fett's, so far Ahsoka lacks feeling and connection. I'll keep watching, but I'm hoping the show gets better.

POSTSEASON EDIT: It did get better! Way better. Then the finale dropped the ball a little bit, but the middle 4 episodes were great.

I watched the two episodes. Not a fan.

The entire production feels obligatory and low energy. Rosario Dawson is intoning her lines in a flat monotone. None of the acting seems genuine. Ray Stevenson (God rest his soul) just comes across as a tired old man instead of as a menacing villain. The saber battles aren’t great especially not that one between the dead eyed blond girl against the Skittles girl fighting over that map ball.

But it is better than a 2. A 2 implies some of the worst TV ever made and this ain’t a 2. I’d give it a 4 or 5.

So by this same logic Avengers Infinity War and Endgame should get horrible reviews as well. Those movies also relied upon you coming into them understanding the background of all its characters and assuming you like them in order to be invested in their fate and the fate of the world they occupy. Completely absurd

So having watched this now can definitely see casual fans not in the know being somewhat left cold. The show is called Ahsoka for for all intents and purposes it's a direct continuation of Rebels S4.

I also think it works better in animation. Given the choice rather it was animation. The animations CW/Rebels are also much tighter, 20 -25 minute. Starwars is just better animated. None of the live action shows capture the original magic in the same manner. And Andor isn't Starwars to begin with. It's a HBO show with the name slapped on.

The opening episode goes at a glacial pace. And the characters have a muted tone to them compared to the more emotive source.

It's obviously mimicking samurai movies. Not merely sword fights but the actual lack of dialogue. People talk in single sentences a fair bit with drawn out shots.

Of all the shows of the Disney era I think Bad Batch has the best opening episodes. Even if the show itself does tip into directionless filler the opening hour episode was fantastic.

Overall I enjoyed this. Though the 1.5 second spinning blade upset me.

After watching both episodes, and not knowing much of anything about SWR, the characters, and their backstories. I must say, I personally enjoyed both episodes, and definitely wouldn't rate the show a 2.

Though I would've like to know more of who the characters are, without having to watch Rebels, and some things would of make more sense, It doesn't really take away from the 'WOW' factor for me... especially the second episode (was pretty cool)

The only pick I have at the show, is really a jab at Disney in particular, and there writers "need" to add so many 'strong female' scenes & roles to their movies & shows. Disney doesn't have to make these things so obvious, We all get why they're doing it (to get the girlfriends/wives that are being "made" to watch this shit by their boyfriends/husbands something they might think is cool to watch LOL)

All in All, If I had to rate the show, so far... I would give it a 7, maybe even an 8. And, this is coming from someone with very little knowledge of the rebels tv show. Definitely one of the better D+ SW spin offs.

on par with The Mandalorian, leaps and bounds better than The Book of Boba Fett.

Can't wait til' the next episode.

@j3diknightdave: In the context of Rebels it makes complete sense.

In the ending both the main villain and hero are shot off in deep space. And his teacher (Kanan Jarrus) dies 2-3 episodes prior.

So, at the end of the show you are left with female characters. It's not some mandate from a studio exec who feel their is too many sausages, it's a literal carry on from the ending.

Wow, what a lousy, click-baity review. I don't think this guy knows what 2/10 means. There's no way on earth these episodes deserved a 2. 5 at the very least.

The episodes flowed narratively and yes, it would have been helpful to have watched Rebels, but Ahsoka was marketed as a continuation of Rebels, so what did you expect?

Action was good, characters were decent to good, and production values were good. Overall, I'm satisfied so far. Looking forward to seeing Anakin!

This will be the last time I visit Gamespot because they’ve just become ridiculous with their scores. They’ve become like the contrarians of gaming journalism and reviews, not in the good way. More so the “we need to get clicks” kind of way.

Over the last year or so, whenever something big comes out and I see it getting a similar review everywhere, Ive been saying to myself “I bet any money Gamespot will review it 2-3 scores lower”, and about 80% of the time I’m right. You see how Baldurs Gate 3 has been getting 9’s and 10’s? I’ll bet any money Gamespot gives it a 7 (they already wrote an article complaining how doing an evil run is too “punishing”).

This reviewer complains “you won’t like this show if you didn’t like Rebels”….. like yea…. No shit. Why did you think otherwise? This show was LITERALLY marketed as the continuation of that story. The trailers highlighting all the Rebels characters MULTIPLE TIMES and the fact the story revolves around finding Thrawn, who is, in the current canon, an exclusively Rebels character, should have been a BIG HINT to this reviewer that this was basically going to be a live action season of Rebels mixed with “Heir to the Throne”.

The fact that this was basically the sole reason why this show got a 2 makes it absurd. Because a show doesn’t get docked down that much for cinema-fucking-tography.

So why even get the guy who clearly dislikes Rebels to review this? Because that’s where the clicks come in. Gamespot wants their reviewers to take strong critical stances while giving lower than average reviews because they know it’s a tried and true way to get clicks. And they’ll purposely pick people who dislike the concept of the content to review it because it sounds more genuine that way.

So yea, I’m just not gonna play this game. I’m out. Which is sad because I’ve been using this site since 2003, but no more. I refuse to enable a lack of journalistic integrity.

Narrator Voice: "It would not be GodofHeck42's last visit to GameSpot. Not by a longshot.

I refuse to enable a lack of journalistic integrity.

while I agree with what you said, I still gotta say... stfu, you'll be back! LOL

@j3diknightdave: Yup. Dude has said he's not coming back every day for six months or so, hasn't he? Sometimes more than once a day.

@olddadgamer: Now they're in the AC:VI review topic, screaming about the fact that there's no BG3 review yet. So yeah, STILL HERE. 😂🤣😅

Not liking or having watched Rebels isn't a reason to give it a 2. The episodes are decent. Not exceptional ala Andor but definitely not what this review promotes. The review is a joke and terrible clickbait.
