Ahsoka Review - For Star Wars: Rebels Fans Only

If you don't already care about Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren, this show probably isn't for you.

I used to think I was unreasonably harsh on Disney's attempts at live-action Star Wars because I didn't like any of it. Then I watched Andor and saw what a legitimately good Star Wars TV show looked like. I'd rather not go back to the old normal. But despite its attempts to pretend otherwise in the two episodes provided by Disney+ ahead of the series premiere, the old normal is exactly what Ahsoka represents. Unless you're a Rebels fan dying to follow up on that cliffhanger from the series finale, there's no reason to watch this show.

Ahsoka begins with a pair of villainous Force users--Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati--invading a New Republic Cruiser to rescue a one-off villain from Season 2 of The Mandalorian named Morgan Elsbeth. As we learned back then, Elsbeth knows something about the location of the missing Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, and they imply that somebody (it's not said who) paid these Force-wielders to rescue Elsbeth and help with her quest to bring him back.

Coincidentally, in the very next scene we see Ahsoka Tano reenact the opening credits of Guardians of the Galaxy, but more boringly and without dancing--she visits some kind of ancient archaeological site in the middle of nowhere on some nothing planet to recover a magical orb, after which she is immediately confronted by and has to fight some baddies who work for the main villain. This orb contains the map to Thrawn, who may or may not be in a different galaxy. So Ahsoka reconvenes with surviving characters from Rebels, Hera Syndulla, and Sabine Wren, and the race to Thrawn is on.

Are you lost yet? If you didn't watch Star Wars: Rebels, which saw the genius Thrawn and protagonist Ezra Bridger pulled into hyperspace toward an unknown destination by space whales, you probably are. Ahsoka is a direct follow-up on that animated series' cliffhanger ending--it's basically Rebels Season 5--and the result is that the two episodes I've seen don't have much to offer fans who didn't watch that cartoon.

No Caption Provided

These first two episodes--which were directed by showrunner Dave Filoni, who also was responsible for the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons--make an attempt to ape Andor's slower pace by, as far as I can tell, simply holding shots longer. But it doesn't work. These episodes end up having no rhythm to speak of, as every scene is filled with extraneous pauses--Ahsoka has all the flow of Attack of the Clones.

The look of it isn't much better, with a series of action sequences that all look basically like the maligned final battle from Marvel's Secret Invasion series--the camera is always far too close to the action to get a good look at what's going on, and the fights are inexplicably inert. It's hard to believe that we've gotten to the point where I groan when it's time for a lightsaber battle, but that's the reality of the situation here.

To make it all the worse, you can feel some of the more cartoony DNA of Rebels seeping into the whole production. We've got Ahsoka doing comical spin moves to cut holes in the floor during a fight like she's Bugs Bunny. One of the bad guys is a former Inquisitor named Marrock who has one of those spinny lightsaber handles that those folks used on Rebels, and he got it spinning really fast and then threw it like a boomerang--it didn't look awesome. And near the end of the second episode, Hera Syndulla is chasing a bad guy ship and asks her astromech droid to prepare a tracking device--this droid, seated on the outside of the ship like R2-D2, starts rummaging through a pile of things that are just sitting there freely on the surface of this ship like it's a desk while Hera is doing all sorts of combat maneuvers. Eventually, it finds the tracker, and then physically throws it with its pincer arm. Maybe you can get away with this in an animated series that's inherently less grounded in reality, but in live-action, this was just embarrassing to watch.

But hey, it could be worse: They could have Marrock use his lightsaber like a helicopter blade and fly around with it, which the Inquisitors did on Rebels. But there are still six more episodes to go, so don't count it out.

No Caption Provided

What's really frustrating here is that if you strip away all the previous story baggage and the characters that this show assumes we already like, there's a potentially very interesting large-scale story happening here that could take us someplace new. Ahsoka and pals racing some free agent Imperials and mercenary Force users on a grand galaxy-spanning quest to solve a cool mystery that might actually take us beyond the scope of Star Wars as we know it? And we've got folks like Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the late, great Ray Stevenson chewing the scenery? That sounds like it could be fun.

Right now, though, all that fun stuff is obscured by, well, that story baggage and these characters the show assumes we already like. Hopefully that dynamic will change as this series continues--as we saw with The Mandalorian Season 3 earlier this year, the quality of these Disney+ Star Wars series can vary dramatically from week to week. And after this very rough start, Ahsoka could use one of those dramatic quality shifts right about now.

The Good

  • This cast could be great
  • There's a potentially interesting core mystery

The Bad

  • Inert, unenergetic filmmaking
  • If you didn't watch and love Rebels, this show isn't for you

I caved and resubbed to watch the first episode because I want to enjoy Star Wars pretty badly. I wouldn't give it a 2, but the review is certainly correct that this is a show for people who already think these characters are cool. Rebels was too cartoony for me, so I don't have much history with these people, and episode one doesn't feel like an introduction so much as it does fan service for the viewers who want to see their favorite characters do cool stuff in live action. For a newcomer, that cool stuff lacks context and comes off as kind of lame.

The main plot hook is interesting enough though, so I hope the rest of the show is less about serving up scenes the writers think are badass, and more about telling that story and selling the audience on the characters in it.

@mogan: Yeah I just finished it. It's good. Rebels is one of my favorite series, though. But I went into Ahsoka very skeptical tbh. Live-action has a lot to prove if it wants to be taken seriously.

I thought it was fine. We all have a Star Wars friend that can fill us in lol.

I Think we can all agree though that a "2" is god damned rediculous. But it sure probably got this article a lot of clicks!!!

@mrbojangles25: Yeah, 2 seems low, but I also don't think review scores are important compared to the content, and I mostly agree with what this reviewer is saying. At least so far; I only watched the first episode.

Though, I will say that EP1's second half was better than the first half and I'm interested to see how EP2 goes.

Question for you as a Rebels fan: Was Sabine's personality here accurate to where the cartoon left her? It felt like she was at the start of a character arc, but I assume she's already had a full arc from the four seasons of Rebels, right? Her almost smarmy rebelliousness leading to her bad choices having negative consequences she now has to learn from seems odd for a long-established character.

haha damn! this guy really didn't like these episodes.

I thought it was good. Not great or amazing. The atmosphere was great though. And the music. I liked the mystical vibe of it and I liked the puzzles too. The acting was just ok so he was right on that one. The "bad guys" were a lot more interesting. Sucks that Stevenson passed on because his character is just cool. I usually like Winstead. Her eyes are amazing... But her acting here is just stiff and to happy(nothing wrong with happy.. but damn... all the time??). Ill keep watching. See where it goes. Hell I always do. Been watching SW since early 80s.. Why stop now!

I legit wonder how this was even allowed to be published. Or how this person was allowed to write the review. They clearly did not like/enjoy rebels or if they did they are upset that this show was even made in the first place. Where is the quality control on this site?

The tone of this review sounds like a child who was forced to do something against their will, and now won't stop talking about how awful it was, even when everyone else had a good time.

The writer acknowledges this is a continuation of Rebels, and that he has seen Rebels... and then craps all over the show because if you haven't seen Rebels, Ahsoka is presumably not a good show. That's not being objective. That's being petty.

Exactly what % of the SW fandom is going to be interested in Ahsoka if they haven't seen Clone Wars or Rebels? And even if you haven't, there's enough context clues to follow along. (Not unlike Andor, which also required some context to fully enjoy.)

This writer clearly has an axe to grind against Disney and/or the SW IP. So he put on his sassy pants and phoned in the review.

The show isn't an instant classic -- very little of SW is, tbh -- but it's by no means a 2.

Ahsoka gets a 2, Blue Beetle gets a 3...

Is everything okay?
Trouble at home?
Xanax scrip run out?

I ask because these review scores seem very personal, rather than objective. The words in this review don't line up with meriting a 2 by any stretch unless its meant to be 2/5. Between this and BB you're wringing your hands for clicks with bait-ratings.

I’ll save y judgment until I watch the episodes. But it’s undeniable that Disney has damaged the IP via overexposure.

Star Wars used to feel special like tentpole events. Now there is a new Star Wars spinoff show every month and it feels ho hum and pedestrian. Unlike others, I didn’t particularly enjoy the Mandalorian or Andor partly because both shows are reaching and grasping for reasons to make its characters special and justify the existence of the shows.

@megagood2345: This is a common thing with Gamespot scores. Gamespot must tell reviewers to take strong stances with their review scores so that they stand out. A 5 or 6 would have been fine and probably more appropriate, but a 2 will get people attention and get people talking.

Well Rebels sucked, so I can't imagine how much worse this could be with the state that Disney and Star Wars is in.

To be honest, I think that Dave Filoni is overrated. There's too many changes they introduced in the Clone Wars series that don't make sense, like Anakin turning into a Jedi Knight and getting (and losing) a padawan in merely 3 years while he himself was still a rookie, or bringing back Darth Maul when he clearly was dead. I dislike the inhibitor chip lore change to excuse the betrayal of the clones as well.

I did like that they fleshed out Anakin's character a bit but all of this felt way too much like fanfiction to me.

@mrbojangles25: The first two seasons were boring and space aladdin was annoying most of the time. The last two seasons did improve quite a lot and the characters got better development but I felt the series took too long to get some momentum going. I personally didn't like the art style either, especially those toothpick lightsaber designs.

The Clone Wars series was better, even if it had some flaws of its own. I'm not sure if I want to consider both series as canon though; as I said before, too many "jump the shark" moments for my taste.

@cboye18: Fair enough, appreciate the response.

Yeah the lightsaber design was a departure for sure, but I recall reading they wanted a more rapier, fencing-style appearance to the lightsabers in Rebels so it was intentional.

I think the "jump the shark" moments can be chalked up to it to it ultimately being a show intended for children, and shows like that needing those moments. All these animated series I've come to love as an adult--Clone Wars, Rebels, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra--they all have those moments, and I either just roll my eyes and move on, or skip the episode entirely if I've seen it before.

In the end, I'm there for the lore. Without Rebels, we wouldn't have had so much story about the Inquisitors, we wouldn't have had Thrawn as the big-bad, and more. It's probably the reason I'm enjoy Ahsoka so much: there's a lot of mystery there and I am hoping they're really going to expand on the lore.

Wow seems a bit harsh but then again you seem to score on some scale just based on your liking as your other reviews seem just as harsh (except Oppenheimer).. i havent really watched rebels and to say i shouldn't watch this makes it sound like you have a personal bone to pick rather than an unbiased review... Usually when i see an unfair score like this, a movie or show will be better than i expected... And if you're saying i need to watch a handful of rebels episodes I can do that ..also mando season 3 was the worst mando season by far, so I don't understand your point hopefully the next episodes get better but strange from a site that praises say she hulk...another Disney plus show to crap on this one

This could be one of the worst reviews of any kind in Gamespot history, and that covers a TON of ground. I mean the way it's written seems like this guy has some sort of agenda or just didn't even try to pay attention to what was going on.....I'm sure he got paid for this too....yikes.

I don't really agree with this review and the score. I'm still excited for Ahsoka as I personally like Star Wars Rebels (also Clone Wars series) and the trailers gave me the impression it will be good.

Plus, this one goes out to Ray Stevenson for his role in Ahsoka after he passed away. Dying at the age of 58 is just too damn young. Ray Stevenson had so much to give, and I hope he gives it all on his final role in Ahsoka.

R.I.P Ray Stevenson🙏

Ahsoka Tano, Hera Syndulla, and Sabine Wren have probably been in more Star Wars canon than Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Rey Skywalker, and Kylo Ren. This review seems to suggest they are minor characters? Further, Ahsoka's appearances in rebels were epic (she does fight Darth Vader to a draw), so I would think Star Wars fans would be interested in that kind of content.

Having not seen the new live-action show, I can't fully agree/disagree with the review, but I'm of the opinion that Dave Filoni can do no wrong, so this will probably be fine even if it starts out slow.

@RogerioFM: The only new canon I think they flubbed is the Rey/Kylo Ren trilogy. The TV shows have ranged from acceptable to great - The Clone Wars is probably my all-time favorite long running show. Further, what was great about the old canon? After re-watching the "original trilogy," it doesn't really hold up as logical anymore - two Death Stars? Really? One of which is defeated in ~20 minutes? A planet destroying superstation is destroyed by a photon torpedo that flies straight and then makes a downward right-turn? That's the culmination of a Sith Genius's life work (the same genius who orchestrated the elimination of the Jedi Order)?

Frankly, IMO, The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, Star Wars Visions, The Mandalorian, Rebels and Andor are better in total than any of the cinematic releases.
