Avatar: The Way Of Water Review – Dead In The Water

  • First Released Dec 16, 2022

James Cameron's Avatar 2 has some incredibly beautiful shots, but fails to live up to its legacy as a bleeding edge spectacle.

You know that brief, horrible moment when you're visiting an older relative's house, and you sit down in front of the TV and realize that they have yet to disable motion smoothing? Even if you've never heard the term before, there's a good chance you're familiar with the look of it--suddenly your favorite show looks like it's a soap opera or shot as a home movie and all the actors look just this side of uncanny--not enough to look totally inhuman but enough that it's distracting. Avatar: The Way Of Water dares to ask the question that was on absolutely no one's mind: What if you got stuck in that uncanny motion smoothing nightmare zone for over three hours and could not turn it off? In fact, what if all those too-smooth, almost-but-not-quite unreal looking actors were rendered in 3D and a couple dozen feet tall?

To be fair, not all of Avatar 2 looks like it's buffered with artificial frames for that motion smoothing effect. The uncanniness sticks solely to the human cast members, who don't make up the bulk of the movie by any shot--but when they do come around (and they're around for a large chunk of the too-long first act), it's hard to be anything but distracted by just how odd it all looks. And, for a movie franchise that owes the whole of its notoriety to the fact that it lives on the absolute bleeding edge of technology, this is a rough way to kick things off.

And things, regrettably, stay pretty rough. Even once the human actors' uncanniness dissipates (it never fully goes away, but it does become less pronounced the fewer live-action scenes there are) the bizarrely uneven visual effects start to become more and more prominent. Make no mistake: huge chunks of this movie are absolutely gorgeous. Just about all of the water and underwater effects are rendered immaculately, and there is some genuinely incredible animation at work to capture little micro expressions in the acting which make the Na'vi characters look and feel very real. These moments are just chopped up between other considerably longer and more obtrusive ones that look and feel like they've been torn out of the cut-scene of a PS5 game. Sure, PS5 cut-scenes do look very good, but they really don't hold up to the sort of scrutiny they need to withstand when they're both in IMAX and in 3D.

All told, there's probably a good hour or so of Way of Water that looks and feels like something you'd want to write home about, which wouldn't be a bad ratio if the movie didn't clock in at a whopping three hours and ten minutes long.

To make matters worse, that hour of truly stunning visuals is mostly owed to a series of long, scenery-chewing montages that carry very little weight in terms of the story or the plot. The movie is at its best when it's pretending to be the prettiest screensaver you've ever seen in your life, and then crumples spectacularly the second it tries to make any of its lovingly rendered blue aliens tell anything that resembles a compelling story.

The bulk of Avatar 2's plot is both figuratively and literally recycled from Avatar 1. The "Sky People" (humans) are coming back to Pandora. The Evil Marine villain (Stephen Lang) from the first movie is back, too, along with his cliche-spouting platoon of Evil Marine chronies. There's a jumble of off-handed plot devices that made them return. t one point, it's because the Earth is dying and humans want to repopulate on Pandora, and at another, it's because there's been a new Unobtanium-flavored natural resource that humans want to mine (we won't spoil what it actually is, but trust us: it's a doozy). However, neither of these things actually matter. Instead, the story tries desperately to make us care about Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family, his real Na'vi wife, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and his 5 half-Na'vi, half-Avatar kids, including one played by Sigourney Weaver, which may be the most awkward casting of all time.

The problem is that Jake Sully is about as engaging and likable as a piece of driftwood, and he and Saldana's chemistry as the central couple is about as charming as a carton of spoiled milk. Saldana is mostly relegated to being the "savage" mother, othered by her inability to understand the "Sky People" the way Jake does, getting very little dialogue outside of wailing and growling and hissing, disagreeing with just about all of Jake's choices. Meanwhile, the kids are all written to be overwhelmingly (and honestly, obnoxiously) human. The only Na'vi trait they have at all is their penchant to bear their teeth when they're cornered--otherwise, they spend their time calling each other "bro" and generally acting like a pack of rowdy high schoolers you'd want to avoid at the mall. This really succeeds in highlighting the fact that Avatar 2 stalwartly refuses to engage with its dated and frankly bizarre central conceit where the human oppressor swoops in to save the oppressed indigenous population as a chosen hero, while somehow being better than them at all of their own customs and traditions. Jake has no real character arc to speak of--he treats his kids like a drill sergeant, bosses around the native Na'vi like he owns the place, and makes unilateral decisions that Neytiri hates but comes to eventually realize were right all along.

The kids, too, are all about as interchangeable and flat as the rest of the movie's characters. They exist almost exclusively to become captives or to get into various perilous situations that prompt Jake to act--I'm not even sure I could tell you any of their names confidently, despite having spent the last three-plus hours with them looming over me in the theater. A handful of times Weaver's teenage character gets hints at her own subplot that could set her apart, but it never comes to fruition and the movie leaves every question about her unanswered and unsatisfying.

Way of Water really gives the impression that what James Cameron is actually interested in with Pandora is the sort of thing you'd find in a National Geographic documentary rather than a blockbuster movie. There's infinitely more care and detail placed into moments of exposition about things like the ins-and-outs of a whaling operation on Pandora than any plot-critical character moment. The creature and tech designs show clear thought and care--even the differences between the forest Na'vi and the reef Na'vi are meticulously crafted and believable. It's just a shame that there's no real story to tell with them, and no real reason to feel invested in them beyond superficial beauty.

The Good

  • Most if not all of the water and underwater effects are immaculately rendered
  • A good hour's worth of incredible animation makes the Na'vi characters look and feel very real
  • Worldbuilding details like alien biology and tech designs are thoroughly developed

The Bad

  • Jake Sully is a deeply unlikable and boring character
  • Zoe Saldana was wasted as Neytiri
  • Nonsense plot with constantly shifting motivations and stakes
  • Supporting cast is interchangeable and flat
  • The vast majority of the human cast looks uncanny and motion-smoothed
  • No stand-out performances to speak of
  • A noticeable amount of unpolished or clunking looking VFXs scenes make the movie look and feel more like a video game cutscene than a bleeding edge technological cinematic accomplishment

saw it yesterday, and I enjoyed it. But at the same time I agree with the reviews somewhat. They did a fantastic job in building the world, the cinematics were top notch, but parts of the movie you could tell there were wierd frame drops like its a video game. The plot was simplistic, and didn't make sense. Like you say, its a bit nonsensical. The general wanted to take out the avatars while the marine villain wanted revenge lol. There were alot of scenes, I was questioning...like the fighting at night where the good guy avatars had the advantage, but the bad guys just stood around, not even any night vision goggles.

Another thing I couldn't understand is how the avatars weren't wearing any bullet proof vests or protection.

At one point in the movie, it felt like I was watching some new kind of anime pron. They really went too far with the humanization, but whatever.

With all that said, the nonsense plot and so on, the movie is still very enjoyable at 9/10, even if its dumb.

@blaznwiipspman1: I agree with your points, as well as many of Mason Downey’s criticisms. Although you and I enjoyed the film more than this review (I’d give it an 8/10), I will acknowledge the story is even thinner than the first film, which wasn’t much to begin with. The 3D, while VASTLY superior to any previous 3D film, did have a few frame rate issues, particularly with the live actors.

What worked and ultimately put the film over for me were its world-building (this film is GORGEOUS), the solid pacing (it sustained my attention for 3 hours — see my comment below to see that I wasn’t alone), the tension (like the first film, there are moments of heavy consequence), and the film’s ability to juggle a much larger cast this time around. Perhaps it’s because I’m a parent that I can identify more with the kids in this film. Yes, they are annoying at times, but kids and adolescents typically are, so I never saw this as a “flaw” with the movie. If one can accept that this film really belongs to the kids and not so much Jake Sully and Neytiri, it may not irk some viewers as much.

@longshank: well said, the world building is very well done and agreed on your 3d as well. James Cameron might be a trash writer, but his film making skills and pacing are top notch.

Your last point on how this film is for kids is especially important. This is the case because kiddy disney bought out the studio back in 2019. Before then, avatar belonged to Fox I believe, and the disney fying hadn't taken place yet. This is why avatar 1 was more geared to mature audiences. I cringed at a few lines that avatar 2 had, things like: "A father always protects" LOL, and that water poem they had. Its typical disney BS, and really irks me in more ways than one.

Thankfully James Cameron was able to rescue the film in other ways. Disney should be banned and sued to hell for buying out movie studios, they are a scourge.

I really enjoyed this movie. But instead of detailing why I liked the sequel, I'd rather share an anecdote: I watched the film with an entire row of vulgar teens sitting right behind me. During the first 20 min of previews, they were chewing loudly on popcorn, saying dumb things at full volume, and not giving two sh**s about those around them. Fearing they would be this way for the next 3 hours, I was surprised by how quickly they shut up once the film started. And not just during the beginning, but for the entirety of the film. If James Cameron was able to shut the traps of those morons behind me for a FULL 3 hours, then he must've created a truly remarkable piece of work....right?

While I would stop short of calling the Way of Water a masterpiece, it is a solid sequel and a frequently breathtaking experience that brings back a sense of wonder and awe that has been missing in modern cinema.

Mason rated Thor Love & Thunder higher than Avatar 2 which should speak volumes about how valid his opinions are regarding this movie.

I just saw this last night and really enjoyed it. I cared about the characters, didn't mind the frame rate at all, the 3D was great, and the story was good. 3 hours flew by and I'll watch it again. If you don't agree that it was good, then that's just like, your opinion man.

The story in this movie is very weak. I knew not to expect a lot considering that the story in the first one was only ok, but I expected a bit more from Cameron. It’s basically a rehash of the first one down to the final battle, which was almost a copy-paste.

The visuals and technology behind it are undeniably great even though there were some jarring inconsistencies with the frame rate. I would not give it a 5, but it’s somewhere in the 6-6.5 range overall.

I guess I cant say I'm surprised that people in the comments disagree with the review, but the review put every opinion I had about the movie into words. Every single character was pretty boring, lacked development, and I couldn't find myself caring about any of them. I cared more about the whale than any of the main characters.

The plot also really bothered me. A 3 hour revenge movie with no resolution, where halfway through they make you think it's about populating Pandora with humans, when really it's just the antagonist attempting to exact revenge. The fact that Jake decided to run, is not a choice that's believable to me that he would make, I saw it as their way of finding a way to bring in the sea people.

Again like the review, some cool visuals, but I couldn't find myself caring about any of the characters or their relationships. I'll stick to rewatching saving private Ryan when I want to see real likeable characters.

“Saldana is mostly relegated to being the "savage" mother, othered by her inability to understand the Sky People the way Jake does”

Neytiri doesn’t have issues with humans, she has an issue the corporate invaders and with Miles…who happens to be the son of you know who.

“Nonsense plot with constantly shifting motivations and stakes”

I disagree, the core conflict stays the same throughout the film with Quaritch trying to hunt down Jake and his family.

“Meanwhile, the kids are all written to be overwhelmingly (and honestly, obnoxiously) human.”

I think they did well regarding the behavior of the kids. You really feel like they’re almost “Military Brats” so to speak, raised by a former jarhead. Even the way Jake talks to his kids builds upon this. Which shouldn’t be too surprising given Jake maintaining much of his marine and human identity.

“bosses around the native Na'vi like he owns the place, and makes unilateral decisions that Neytiri hates but comes to eventually realize were right all along.”

Except at the end of the film he admits to Neytiri that she was right and that he should have fought from the very beginning. His kids aren’t “white saviors” either, they’re almost 1/3 human genetically. Furthermore Jake was Toruk Makto, a position respected by all Na’vi regardless of what clan they are a part of. Throughout most of the film I’d hardly say he bosses then around either, he takes a bit of a step back and is careful to respect the authority of Tonowari.

@vinm: Have you never paid for a movie you ended up not liking? You'd be lying to yourself if you say that's never happened.

People don't like Avatar and their opinions are as meaningless as yours. It does not matter if this is a gaming site or not, the source does not negate the fact people simply do not like Avatar.

@vinm: Maybe they got brought along?

I was not interested in seeing this movie at all, but my girlfriend wanted to go see it, so I was roped into it.

I didn't dislike it, but I think every complaint I have heard about this movie is pretty valid. I'd struggle to give the movie higher than a 7 myself.

But more to the point of your comment, people are often forced to sit through movies they find boring because they are being brought along by other people.

@vinm: Is Avatar baby's first movie for you? You'll get over the opinions of others. I'm just humored over you joining a gaming site for this. Hopefully you aren't losing sleep knowing people don't like Avatar.

Saying you don't like a movie is not "bitching". Funny, because you are doing exactly that.

A movie can be considered a work of art and as such is beauty to the eye of the beholder and can be not as good to another. Sometimes people bring their personal dislikes or likes into the equation and may not be able to get an accurate view of the movie. The reviewer gave his personal review of the movie and I do not generally accept his or another review because again some reviewer's or people synopsis of the movie may be biased and therefore, I will see how well it does for me as it is all about what I like and dislike.

I will wait for the Blu-Ray and DVD and not trashing the movie as I had not been to the theater for over 4 years. However, from what I seen the work is excellent, but the novelty of the work has been crossed already so there might be some that it does not hold as well as the last time. One of the pillars to hold this movie together is the plot and execution of events in the movie.

@vinm: Seems like this review and the fact people don't like Avatar really hurts your feelings. Look at how much effort you are putting in to deflect the opinions of others.

I mean, look at you, YOU are that guy who joined a gaming website just to comment on this article. Seems like despite your claim to not care about reviewers, you were motivated enough to make an account just to speak of it. Your actions speak a lot louder than your own claims.

@jaydan: lmao so I'll tell you my point since you couldn't gather it from all my comments.

Reviewers are pointless. No one should let an internet strangers review of a movie dictate whether or not they see it themselves. Especially a video game magazine reviewing movies.

Me commenting that doesn't take away from my point. Even if I spent years telling people that everyday, it still doesn't detract from the point.

Reviewers are unneeded.

Can you say you're bugged anymore without saying you are bugged?

I never understood the obsession with the first film. I saw it once. Not that I'm going to listen to movie reviews if I want to see anything. There are a lot of films that were trashed by reviewers that I enjoyed, and vice versa.

@phili878: I mean, this is true if you ignore all of the negative reviews. ALL other reviews gave it a 70% or higher? One quick Google search proves this untrue. The Guardian gave it a 2/5. Variety was highly critical. Forbes disliked it a great deal. Many other sites had similar complaints (screen saver with no substance). This is either a disingenuous comment made to steer people the wrong way, or is just ignoring all of the critical reviews to make some kind of point. Either way, this is incorrect.

@phili878: you’re the one who said “GS graded it by far the lowest.” This is just inarguably untrue when the Guardian gave it a 2/5, etc.

Regardless, rotten tomatoes doesn’t even rank based on how good something is. It ranks based on how many reviews are leaning positive. This means you could technically have a 100% rotten tomatoes movie that everyone gave a 3/5 to, because 100% of the reviews lean to “it’s fine.”

Regardless, your original statement wasn’t true, and plenty of major reviews have been critical of it, and plenty have given it a “it’s okay, 3/5” score because it looks beautiful but has a terrible story.

@Korachof11: and from the research I did, it was the lowest. I did not look at ALL review scores out there and maybe GS graded it before TG? Who knows, who cares?

@phili878: GS scores from their permanent staff are essentially just woke meters. I didn't think the first film was all that great either, but at least my opinion is based on the movie itself and not any agenda.
