Avatar: The Way Of Water Review – Dead In The Water

  • First Released Dec 16, 2022

James Cameron's Avatar 2 has some incredibly beautiful shots, but fails to live up to its legacy as a bleeding edge spectacle.

You know that brief, horrible moment when you're visiting an older relative's house, and you sit down in front of the TV and realize that they have yet to disable motion smoothing? Even if you've never heard the term before, there's a good chance you're familiar with the look of it--suddenly your favorite show looks like it's a soap opera or shot as a home movie and all the actors look just this side of uncanny--not enough to look totally inhuman but enough that it's distracting. Avatar: The Way Of Water dares to ask the question that was on absolutely no one's mind: What if you got stuck in that uncanny motion smoothing nightmare zone for over three hours and could not turn it off? In fact, what if all those too-smooth, almost-but-not-quite unreal looking actors were rendered in 3D and a couple dozen feet tall?

To be fair, not all of Avatar 2 looks like it's buffered with artificial frames for that motion smoothing effect. The uncanniness sticks solely to the human cast members, who don't make up the bulk of the movie by any shot--but when they do come around (and they're around for a large chunk of the too-long first act), it's hard to be anything but distracted by just how odd it all looks. And, for a movie franchise that owes the whole of its notoriety to the fact that it lives on the absolute bleeding edge of technology, this is a rough way to kick things off.

And things, regrettably, stay pretty rough. Even once the human actors' uncanniness dissipates (it never fully goes away, but it does become less pronounced the fewer live-action scenes there are) the bizarrely uneven visual effects start to become more and more prominent. Make no mistake: huge chunks of this movie are absolutely gorgeous. Just about all of the water and underwater effects are rendered immaculately, and there is some genuinely incredible animation at work to capture little micro expressions in the acting which make the Na'vi characters look and feel very real. These moments are just chopped up between other considerably longer and more obtrusive ones that look and feel like they've been torn out of the cut-scene of a PS5 game. Sure, PS5 cut-scenes do look very good, but they really don't hold up to the sort of scrutiny they need to withstand when they're both in IMAX and in 3D.

All told, there's probably a good hour or so of Way of Water that looks and feels like something you'd want to write home about, which wouldn't be a bad ratio if the movie didn't clock in at a whopping three hours and ten minutes long.

To make matters worse, that hour of truly stunning visuals is mostly owed to a series of long, scenery-chewing montages that carry very little weight in terms of the story or the plot. The movie is at its best when it's pretending to be the prettiest screensaver you've ever seen in your life, and then crumples spectacularly the second it tries to make any of its lovingly rendered blue aliens tell anything that resembles a compelling story.

The bulk of Avatar 2's plot is both figuratively and literally recycled from Avatar 1. The "Sky People" (humans) are coming back to Pandora. The Evil Marine villain (Stephen Lang) from the first movie is back, too, along with his cliche-spouting platoon of Evil Marine chronies. There's a jumble of off-handed plot devices that made them return. t one point, it's because the Earth is dying and humans want to repopulate on Pandora, and at another, it's because there's been a new Unobtanium-flavored natural resource that humans want to mine (we won't spoil what it actually is, but trust us: it's a doozy). However, neither of these things actually matter. Instead, the story tries desperately to make us care about Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family, his real Na'vi wife, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and his 5 half-Na'vi, half-Avatar kids, including one played by Sigourney Weaver, which may be the most awkward casting of all time.

The problem is that Jake Sully is about as engaging and likable as a piece of driftwood, and he and Saldana's chemistry as the central couple is about as charming as a carton of spoiled milk. Saldana is mostly relegated to being the "savage" mother, othered by her inability to understand the "Sky People" the way Jake does, getting very little dialogue outside of wailing and growling and hissing, disagreeing with just about all of Jake's choices. Meanwhile, the kids are all written to be overwhelmingly (and honestly, obnoxiously) human. The only Na'vi trait they have at all is their penchant to bear their teeth when they're cornered--otherwise, they spend their time calling each other "bro" and generally acting like a pack of rowdy high schoolers you'd want to avoid at the mall. This really succeeds in highlighting the fact that Avatar 2 stalwartly refuses to engage with its dated and frankly bizarre central conceit where the human oppressor swoops in to save the oppressed indigenous population as a chosen hero, while somehow being better than them at all of their own customs and traditions. Jake has no real character arc to speak of--he treats his kids like a drill sergeant, bosses around the native Na'vi like he owns the place, and makes unilateral decisions that Neytiri hates but comes to eventually realize were right all along.

The kids, too, are all about as interchangeable and flat as the rest of the movie's characters. They exist almost exclusively to become captives or to get into various perilous situations that prompt Jake to act--I'm not even sure I could tell you any of their names confidently, despite having spent the last three-plus hours with them looming over me in the theater. A handful of times Weaver's teenage character gets hints at her own subplot that could set her apart, but it never comes to fruition and the movie leaves every question about her unanswered and unsatisfying.

Way of Water really gives the impression that what James Cameron is actually interested in with Pandora is the sort of thing you'd find in a National Geographic documentary rather than a blockbuster movie. There's infinitely more care and detail placed into moments of exposition about things like the ins-and-outs of a whaling operation on Pandora than any plot-critical character moment. The creature and tech designs show clear thought and care--even the differences between the forest Na'vi and the reef Na'vi are meticulously crafted and believable. It's just a shame that there's no real story to tell with them, and no real reason to feel invested in them beyond superficial beauty.

The Good

  • Most if not all of the water and underwater effects are immaculately rendered
  • A good hour's worth of incredible animation makes the Na'vi characters look and feel very real
  • Worldbuilding details like alien biology and tech designs are thoroughly developed

The Bad

  • Jake Sully is a deeply unlikable and boring character
  • Zoe Saldana was wasted as Neytiri
  • Nonsense plot with constantly shifting motivations and stakes
  • Supporting cast is interchangeable and flat
  • The vast majority of the human cast looks uncanny and motion-smoothed
  • No stand-out performances to speak of
  • A noticeable amount of unpolished or clunking looking VFXs scenes make the movie look and feel more like a video game cutscene than a bleeding edge technological cinematic accomplishment

This movie and franchise is a dud. They could have held back the first movie to get Damon who they offered TEN PERCENT of gross, but Cameron was so far up his own *** saying things like "we dont need you, the movie is the star" that they just cast Worthington. Damon never said no, he just respected his obligations to finish the Bourne movies. Cameron could and should have waited, but it was all about cashing in on that 3D fad at the time.

This one is about cashing in on the fact that we dont get big blockbuster movies anymore... well here ya go!

@treechopper88: I will say I'm not a huge fan of Matt Damon and Idk how much we would have added, but I have literally zero clue who the main actor was in the old one without looking him up. I thought he did a good job, just wasn't memorable as an actor though.

@Misterman: well some actors get thier career Jump started after a big roll. A lot of marvel actors are in the same boat. Chris Hemsworth is another one just like Sam Worthington. I didn't even know who Chris Hemsworth was until after Thor. I even saw perfect getaway in the movie theater too. Took me probably until I saw rush too actually look up Chris Hemsworth and say dang he was in perfect getaway lol. I like Chris Hemsworth as Thor is amazing as Thor but like a lot of actors that's the roles that they're known for. For even some actors it's hard for them too get other roles cause that's all they see. But they all gotta start some where.

@Misterman: If he did a good job, he would have been memorable? I mean I dont have to list examples because great actors are always remembered for roles.

Sam Worthington was supposed to be the next big thing. Thats why he was cast after Damon couldn't do it. Now dont get me wrong, I like him, especially in Everest which I constantly rewatch (also is loaded with other major A-listers). He is a decent actor, but he does not have the range to act the character in Avatar.

Matt Damon is a fantastic actor in the Bourne movies, and carries them single-handedly (and they are among the best action films ever made). In The Martian he showed that he could play a positive person despite a bleak outlook, just like a legless soldier whose brother just died as in Avatar.

The first one was a flash in the pan CGI heavy take on Dances with Wolves and made a lot of money but was pretty forgettable to me. I had heard Cameron wanted to make like 6 Avatar movies total in some news article after the success of that first one. Did he change his mind or is he still planning on making these stupid things?

I guess money will tell...

First one was utter trash to begin with. It was literally a rip off of Pocohantas set in space, only it had no charm. Dull, ridiculously stock caricatures instead of characters, pathetic dialog, stock action that could have been in any movie, and zero nuance. The ONLY thing the first one had was visuals.

Cue version 2 and it is more of the insipid garbage of the first one. I am surprised. Not.

84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

There will always be hipster contrarians when it comes to all things on top, and especially when it comes to 'geeky" things like video games or fantasy movies in which 'normies' are excited for. Geeks hate normal people, therefore will campaign online day after day with torch and pitchfork in hand screaming for Avatar's head on a stick.

Why? Because they can't call it their own.

If normies hadn't adopted the world of Pandora by buying tickets to the first movie in droves, geeks would have made Cameron's 'failed' project a cult classic by now.

Instead, they constantly reiterate the same lines of 'Avatar is a Fern Gully or Pocahontas ripoff!' over 10 years later while gladly being force fed the same MCU garbage multiple times per year without any remorse because, you know, comic books are for nerds.

@boodger: Funny how the people rigorously defending this movie and condescending those that aren't buying the hype - defending for no other reason than the first movie being a massive box office success - don't see the irony in them trashing the MCU, as visibly shown in the comments.

It's almost like box office isn't indicative of film quality. Maybe one day these people will understand. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

@theam0g: I think people took it personal when Cameron decided to cater to a wider audience. Especially when they thought they could tank Avatar and failed.

There is going to be a lot of copium when way of water succeeds again without their permission.

I'm one of the few who isn't hyped about Avatar 2 but still will go see it on day one. I did not go see the first Avatar film when it came out in IMAX and people were obsessed with it so, so I'm going to see this in IMAX this time around and my last IMAX visit was for Dune.

Didn't Peter Jackson get some crap for "motion smoothing" in The Hobbit movies when ultimately he just filmed it at 60 fps instead of the standard 30?

Anyway, good review, taking it with a grain of salt though as Gamespot can often be a bit "hipster" at times.

I mean let's be frank; original Avatar was a lot like Star Wars. People enjoyed it because it wasn't offensive, easy to like, and beautiful. It didn't have particularly good acting or an amazing plot or brilliant writing. It just didn't do anything poorly while doing a few things really well.

I don't expect Way of the Water to be any different, so maybe my expectations are lower than others.

@mrbojangles25: Peter Jackson did, but the pushback and/or reaction to seeing it was generally not great, so almost all (if not all) cinemas used the 30fps cut. Those that saw the 60fps version said it looked like they were watching a stage play.

@holykapow: This. I saw it in 60fps on accident and was 30 mins into the movie before I realized the movie had actually started and I wasn't watching just a low-budget Hobbit-themed ad before the movie.

Over a decade of Marvel’s visual extravaganzas really deadens the enthusiasm for the one thing that made Avatar special.

@Bread_or_Decide: It sounds like not all of the visuals are actually top tier.

I’m sure Avatar 2 looks great, overall, but after so many superhero movies, just having good looks isn’t going to cut it like it did in 2009.

@mogan: I personally enjoy the spiritual theme of avatar. As long as the film delivers on action, the family theme, and the spiritual connection to Pandora then I’ll be a happy filmgoer. If all you want is CGI then I can see one being disappointed

@Bread_or_Decide: This is quite a dull an unfounded assumption of yours. I'm certain most of us here like popular media of different sorts, just not Avatar.

You can totally enjoy Avatar on your own, no one is stopping you from doing so.

If calling people contrarian hipsters just because they don't like Avatar helps you feel better about yourself, I hope that will be enough to help you go to sleep at night.

I hear that, and i don't believe it one bit. Its one of the only guys in the cinema industry that sounds like he is truly passioned about it. He will retire, and within a year or two, you will see him coming back.

@dussan2: I'm surprised you're saying "the overwhelming majority" when the most popular films and television series of the past several years have all been filmed on sound stages with green screen backdrops, or 'virtual sets'. Obviously filming on location happens with dramas, indie projects, etc. but there's clearly a trend I'm referring to. Are you not aware of that?

I should clarify, I guess. When I say "We", I mean James Cameron and other blockbuster directors. I'm not interested in virtual sets, VR cameras and robotic camera ops, cgi/motion captured 'actors' becoming the norm. They make the film look bad.
