Blade & Soul Review

A Blade Unsharpened

I'm a big fan of monk-style character classes. I've kicked demons in Diablo III, clobbered hydras in Final Fantasy XIV, and unleashed swarms of punches while swigging brews in World of Warcraft. But it wasn't until Blade & Soul that I encountered the essence of kung fu--at least as far as a keyboard can capture. At its best, Blade & Soul delivers that rare brand of combat that makes me consider learning these moves for real. And that's why I'm so sad that the rest of the game never reaches the same heights.

Blade & Soul's problems partly spring from its timing. It's only "new" in the West; East Asian players have enjoyed it since it came out in South Korea way back in 2012, when it and other Korean MMORPGs like TERA started to grab headlines for action combat. Blade & Soul is a time capsule of sorts that contains few of the quality-of-life changes introduced to the genre over the past few years, and the usual bugbears strut across the stage here: the wide tunnels for leveling that hint at an open world but don't really deliver it, the torrent of mindless kill-and-fetch quests, and the hyper-sexualized depictions of women and young girls that leave many Westerners either shuddering with shame or giggling at the proportions.

Blade & Soul might be showing its age already, but it doesn't lack for beauty.
Blade & Soul might be showing its age already, but it doesn't lack for beauty.

Still, it does achieve a certain grandeur in parts, whether it's in the intricate weapons or the fantastic landscapes stuffed with cloud-swept pagodas and blossoming woods. Considering its age, it's no surprise some of these landscapes suffer from poor textures and muddy details, but Blade & Soul generally presents them with a degree of style.

The story starts off on a respectable (if predictable) note, when the Hongmoon School gets wiped out, leading to a 45-level-long quest for revenge. The opening quests and cutscenes benefit from a welcome dose of cinematic suspense and camaraderie, but the tale quickly loses momentum in the drudgy march from one hub for kill-and-fetch quests to the next. By Level 15, I'd largely stopped caring about what the people I encountered had to say at all. I just wanted to punch stuff.

And boy, does Blade & Soul oblige. Few MMOs pull off combat better, and each of the seven classes can unleash combos that require watching what players and NPCs are doing in an effort to counter them. It's far more Street Fighter than World of Warcraft, even to an extent unmatched by TERA. Whether I was slamming diminutive Lyn warriors in the face with my oversized axe or rooting Kung Fu Masters as a spell-slinging Force Master, it was always enjoyable.

One perfectly executed combo can mean the difference between life and death in PvP.
One perfectly executed combo can mean the difference between life and death in PvP.

All this comes together to complement a uniquely rewarding PvP experience, which reaches its zenith in the arena mode once players have unlocked their full range of skills at the level cap. Blade & Soul allows lower-level players to try to rough up level-capped folks in the arenas through normalization--a setting that evens out competitors' stats--but that's rarely wise since the absence of complete skills and their boosts from talent trees presents a monstrous disadvantage. Yet it's not impossible. Skill reigns supreme in Blade & Soul (as does a decent ping), and a smart newbie can still technically take down a veteran. A single arena match provides enough evidence of why Blade & Soul enjoys such a healthy esports life in Asia.

Many NPC enemies use skills that players will use in the arenas, which should make for decent PVP training. The problem? They fight at a snail's pace, and it's possible to simply clobber your way through most encounters if you don't mind chugging a healing potion every once in a while.

As it is, both the single-player and group dungeons amount to little more than short jaunts to forgettable thugs. Even the crafting lacks imagination, as it requires little more than placing an order and waiting for a bit. It also tends to lack the lively conversations (and bickering) of a good MMO's chat channel, though it's not through any fault of the players.

Combat with NPCs can be a bit of a joke, but they can still deal some pain if you miss a counter.
Combat with NPCs can be a bit of a joke, but they can still deal some pain if you miss a counter.

As of the time of writing, it's almost impossible to carry on a conversation in many of the game-wide chat channels as they're crammed with gold spammers hawking their illicit wares. It was initially possible to get past the worst of it by leveling a bit, but now the spammer hordes choke up the lines even several hours in. Presuming you can get in. Several days in, the login queues remain obscene, sometimes even with the premium plan that sorts you into a shorter line.

Yet one of the saving graces of Blade & Soul is that you don't have to pay a cent if you don't want to. Most of the time, there's no need. The cash shop mainly deals in cosmetic outfits that run the gamut from racy to grim, and many of these aren't even as impressive as the ones you can get with minimal effort from playing. Everything else mainly aims to make life a little simpler, such as experience-granting food or inventory expansions. As with the best cash shop models, making a purchase sometimes feels like making a donation.

For all its drawbacks, I nevertheless enjoyed Blade & Soul. But when you're not at the level cap, it's a fleeting enjoyment best suited to short bursts. It tries to leverage combat to shoulder the weight of its other, more cumbersome parts, and in the process, even the combat stumbles after long hours of repetition. Despite the strong foundation, I was struggling to stay interested in Blade & Soul at the end of my journey. It does wonders with the blade, yes. But where's the soul?

The Good

  • Active, combo-heavy combat demands full attention
  • Beautiful environments enrich setting and story
  • Fantastic arena PvP mode

The Bad

  • Quests quickly become repetitive and boring
  • Lacks content from the Asian version
  • Short, boring dungeon sequences
  • Bare bones "crafting"

Playing this game for one reason: Arena PvP does not require gear to be competitive = no wasting time farming items/upgrades/enchants every season.

- Cons: Game client is very poorly optimized.

For me personally, I agree with the point of females being over-sexualized. BnS takes the hyper sexualization to a point where it no longer feels "sexy". The breast proportions are very obscene in some cases, and that coupled with the ridiculous boob physics (your boobs fly around like particles in a Hadron Collider from even the most subtle movements) and the almost equally ridiculous outfits, ends up making it feel like some people are playing as prostitutes that have undergone an unhealthy amount of plastic surgery, rather than truly attractive or sexy women.

For me personally, there's a difference between sexy and slutty. I'm not a fan of the latter. But that's just my personal tastes. Others may feel differently.

Aside from that, the game is okay. The combat is good but the world does feel rather small and restricted. Outfits aren't very customizable so you end up with a lot of players looking the same as each other (you can't even dye outfits).

Content wise, I don't think it will keep me interested very long and the servers seem poorly optimized. I have no issues playing other online games, but I seem to have consistent latency issues in BnS, up to a point where it can take a few seconds for a skill to activate when it starts getting really bad. I doubt I'd be able to perform well in PvP unless they fix things in that regard, and if that's the main drawcard for this game, then that's already a show stopper for me.

@TenraiSenshi: i think your first paragraph might explain why Nintendo dumbs down and censors some of their games (like xenoblade chronicles, fire emblem etc).

@TenraiSenshi: I never understood the whole "hyper sexualized" argument. If this is hyper sexual then we have to admit that our Western culture is hyper sexualized because I regularly see girls wear more revealing clothing in public. Our Western culture is drowning with REAL women who are hyper sexualized in Hollywood movies and music videos. It just seems to me, it becomes completely unacceptable when we see it in video games because we still unconsciously view video games as something only for children.

@tempaccess: "It just seems to me, it becomes completely unacceptable when we see it in video games because we still unconsciously view video games as something only for children."

On the contrary, I feel quite the opposite. I have no issues with seeing nudity in games, in fact I wish games would treat the topic of nudity more seriously, like we seen in series and movies, and stop treating gamers like children.

This is actually part of why I am irked by games like BnS, where nudity and sexualization is treated in such a childish, unrealistic and hyper-sexualized manner. Having back breakingly large breasts that bounce around like ping pong balls just from turning your character slightly is, in my opinion, something done to cater to hormonal preteens, not adults looking for a more mature gameplay experience.

Upgrading the weapons and the cost it takes and the grind it takes to level the weapons rings and neck is really bad and the crafting really doesn't help with that with some of mats need taking upto 24 hours to craft.

PVP is fun the tag team match is hands down my favorite.

@NeoGen85: well that is also bad but that doesn't make anything less bad, I have played a bit of ESO really didn't care for it . Blade and soul minus the horrible crafting and the multiple grinds for each of those systems is still fun to play.

grabbing your enemy and carrying them around is the best.

Time is definitely Blade and Soul's biggest enemy. I think the combat is great and the 1-on-1 PvP is so entertaining! But it does little to convince me that I am suppose to be playing a MMORPG. It so linear in its design with its vertical progression; that any argument about BnS existing in a online persistent world feels mute.

I'm still in the low lvls of this game even now, i'm so unsure what class I like that i've been trying them all a little bit. So hard to even rate this game until you get to max level and get into pvp and things like that. Leaning a bit towards kungfu master or assassin... maybe destroyer.

Biggest problems i notice so far is ping, i have unstable connection so its hard to know how far i can take pvp in this game before getting frustrated and quitting.

Disagree with this review. It is one sided and clearly focuses it's rating purely on the MMO pve aspect and not the game mechanics and story

"Wait this is a free to play? Oh! Well then the B grade polish and average game design is worthy of praise. 10/10" - IGN

You what know I agree with this review. 6 is a decent number for this game. Being free to play shouldn't net you "brownie points" that bolsters your score. As a game the reviewed should be placed on the same scale as any other. While its nice to see a free to play MMO done with such visual aesthetics the MMO landscape is now such that F2P is now becoming the norm. Blade and Soul does nothing visually or design wise that steps above the rest. This isn't Black Desert.

"I was quite thoroughly bored having spent 15 hrs trudging through each forgettable fetch only to unlock more quests. This quest game play clearly was enough punishment as my end reward was glorious PvP that required skill and lots of juicy ping. 5/5" - Giantbomb

Let me say this. Any game that will make you suffer through a beginning portions just so you can enjoy the game and to be clear when I say suffer I'm not talking about difficult game play like Dark Souls. Suffer as in having the soul sucked out of you till you wonder " I'm I playing this to have fun or to have a reason to go outside?" Any game that puts you through that should never get higher than a 7. That's a clear sign bad game design. Its either one of two things. The dev is padding the game in order to stretch it out, which if that's the case F them , or its a poor game that has got got some decent areas or concepts, in which case I hope they learn from this. For me the classic example is the old Unreal 2 shooter. Tons of long boring sections mixed up with lack luster game play only to be given the baddest gun ever given in a shooter. A black hole gun. Your so OP it is improbable that you will even die. Finally you don't rate a game on the only part that it does well and you don't rate it cause it satisfies one group really really well. Unless you want a bias review?

"What I found was a game that was clearly targeted at a niche audience who are only concerned with the end game PVP but marketed for all MMO players to play and enjoy. I would complain but as xxxIPlayPvP24hrsxxx told me "What? 10 hrs in and your salty? You should have watch game play videos. The game is literally 2 years old." 5 stars" - Gameinformer

Blade and Soul is for a niche crowd very similar to that of the soon to come Black Desert. Most of the people here defending Blade and Soul are MMO players who like MMOs with end game PvP . New comers who come for the MMO experience will be disappointed and become frustrated but don't you say anything because the MMO community will tell you to "suck it up" or you should have know better. That's ridiculous! Sure no game dev wants to say "Well our game is designed for a very very specific type of gamer". They try to cater to as much people as they can. Take Destiny. Activision tries its hardest for it not to be called an MMO and downplays the RPG experience because they don't want to turn away anyone from buying the game. Yet when you actually play Destiny instantly you'll know whether this is your type or who this game is clearly made for. So stop bitching at gamers and reviewers who bailed because they couldn't be bothered to reach the end game.

**NOTE** The quotes used are fictional. They are just for the added effect of showing a review pandering to the argument at hand and how absurd it would sound when given a perfect score.

@vinion2000: You are out of point entirely ... Noone here tries to say or even said BnS is a 10/10 mmorpg. Most of us saying that review wasnt well structured in order to convince us BnS is a 6. I rated 7/10 personally.

The game aside its flaws has some of the most unique gameplay elements i ever played ( and i played alooot of mmorpgs ) , not laggy ( i never noticed lag up till now but then again i didnt play on day 1 ) , its PVP is phenomenally good like very few games can be compared to it mainly because it NOT GEAR based its more like SKILL based , the fights are intense and memorable every single time , fast paced where aside gear needs reflexes and combos etc , simple yet not that bad of itemization to keep you searching and evolving , decent proffessions to get you some gold to progress....

I mean its a good game , nothing more nothing less. Bad graphics and repetitive quests and lag and this and that ... Name a single mmorpg that has superb graphics and not repetitive quests and didnt experience lag at its release and ... come on now. 7/10 from me

@vinion2000: You sound petty and come off like a victim. Is your game hurting by players leaving for B&S.?

Wouldn't be surprised.... It has one of the best mmo story lines I've played since GW1 prophecies.

A unique set of battle controls that rewards skill over face palming keyboarding.

So no 10/10 for f2p is wrong but we'll deserving of an 8 in my book and best part. Not p2w. Unlike money grabbing games like Archage or guildwars 2.

Not adding a TLDR because I had grind through your QQ speech.

@liquidrider1: Victim and here I was going for smug bastard. Oh well.

I will admit that I have a bias created from playing PSO2. You sort of laugh when another RPG says it has awesome combat only to see your character flailing around while rooted in position.

Right now no MMO is in danger of losing players to Blade and Soul. I can bet you that. It will have a fanbase no doubt but until the expansion content arrives I think its a 6.

I'd give it a 7 honestly. The game's PvE content is not that fun. PvP is where it shines best. Arena fights are extremely addicting and skill oriented. This game is a mere time waster for me, at least until Black Desert comes out on March 3rd. Can't freakin wait for that game. Will be playing on the 29th of February actually due to my founder's pack.

Yeah Gamespot barely knows how to review a PC game let alone a brand new grindy MMO. It could be the best PVE/PVP grind experience and the reviewers here will still hate it because they are WILDSTAR KIND OF PLAYERS. There I said it....

Seriously though, look at ESO, Wildstar, RIFT, Neverwinter. All these MMOs got stellar reviews from this website ROFL.

@invizo:

You are one to talk about others barely knowing how to review a PC game too. Do recall what you have said under the review article for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

"A Dx12 engine, decent story, on a AAA platform is worth more in its weight than a well done indie. Graphics do matter, even if console cretins disagree."

If graphics matter far more than anything else about a game, especially considering that Syndicate recycled its predecessors' gameplay, you are not exactly the best person to talk about reviewing PC games.

This is coming from me, a computer-centric consumer who has long since outgrown any fascination with having cutting-edge graphics.

Also, you are being two-faced here. Do recall what you have said under the review article for Elder Scrolls Online:

"Don't agree with this one, giant breath of fresh air in the MMO space and I'm 150+ hours in."

That seems to imply that you think that Elder Scrolls Online is a good game, or at least good enough to have you dig more than 150 hours into it.

Yet here you are, implying that Elder Scrolls Online is for the "WILDSTAR KIND OF PLAYERS". Aren't you being a "WILDSTAR KIND OF PLAYER" yourself?

@chad28_69: Firstly, you haven't been around in GameSpot enough to know about the rules on conduct. Trolling is not an offense anymore, especiallyif the trolling is about jabs at another person's preferences for games.

Secondly, if I "need" attention, I would be posting a hell lot more, and I would be expressing a lot more opinions on games in addition to taking jabs at other people's opinions.

Thirdly, if this is "sad" to see in your eyes, you haven't been around in comment threads and forums enough, and this is perhaps why you don't know much about the rules on conduct for users.

P.S. If you are the one who has been spam-flagging my posts, then you have learned the hard way that the flagging system works against the user that is doing the flagging as it does the user who is being flagged.

@Dexyu: You are shifting the goal-post. That won't change the fact that you gave a "5" during Warframe's earlier stages.

With that said, what were your complaints about Warframe when you gave it a "5"? Was it because that it did not have "a lot" back then?

@noirtenshin: I recall that you have mentioned matter of communication between the developers of the original region and the developers of the different region.

Now, I understand what you are getting at: the delays are to be expected if the developers of the different region has to rely on the expertise of the developers in the original region. The latter is expected to be more familiar with the coding and programming of stuff in the game, and I do understand that the likes of NCSoft will want to keep costs low by keeping the expertise closer to home.

However, understanding is not the same acceptance. I will tell you this right now: I deplore this practice.

I will only accept this practice if the product concerned is a one-size-fits-all thing - but an MMO is not such a thing. It has to be adapted to match the tastes of the local consumer base.

I will say here that if the likes of NCSoft, or any other MMO-maker for that matter, wants to reach into markets elsewhere, it will have to develop a base of expertise in its branches for those other markets as well. In other words, the other regional branches should have employees which are well-versed with the original content and the tools to create it, so that they can implement changes to the original content without having to go through the inter-region communications loop.

Having the original developers design improvements for the original version while implementing the change requests for the other regional versions is a practice that dumps a lot of work on them. This will not end well.

@noirtenshin: You can say that the delays are intended so as to cater for consumers of different regions, and yes, I have heard that argument before. I also have counter-arguments for this.

Why can't the game-maker just include all the content in the first place and modify them later by using the feedback? This will fulfill the goal of adapting the game to different consumers too. Sure, there will be grumbles about the original version of the content not matching the tastes of different consumers (e.g. that risk of "building" collapse which you mentioned) and thus alienating them, but this is a given disadvantage of such a product development strategy.

Besides, holding back content will result in a sense of alienation anyway in the user base of the different region anyway.

Furthermore, holding back content to tweak them, even though the content is not available to the intended consumer base, can backfire. I am assuming here that the content which is being adapted is tested by a focus group, but there is no guarantee that this group represents the user base of the region. There is also a risk that the group is nothing more than a bunch of die-hards who will gobble up any content and not provide much in the way of critical feedback.

I also have a response to your remark about communications issues between developers of different regions. This will be in a different post.

Ok, so I am going to add my two cents as its a little disappointing seeing some of the feedback in these threads. Blade and Soul is a good game, not a great game but solid enough to warrant a better score than given above.

If the game isn't judged on it's endgame PvP its going to seem quite shallow compared to other offerings. That being said, are we playing an MMO for the quest chain that typically acts as a tutorial?

On Feb 10th there is going to be a solid update with additional PVE content that really should have been included when the game initially launched. The new content should keep players well engaged until the next xpac arrives.

I think what needs to be said in these reviews is that for a free to play game its actually quite good. Unfortunately a lot will be turned away because of lackluster reviews like posted above.

If you enjoy fast action PVP don't let this one pass you buy. Its certainly worth the grind.
