Blade & Soul Review

A Blade Unsharpened

I'm a big fan of monk-style character classes. I've kicked demons in Diablo III, clobbered hydras in Final Fantasy XIV, and unleashed swarms of punches while swigging brews in World of Warcraft. But it wasn't until Blade & Soul that I encountered the essence of kung fu--at least as far as a keyboard can capture. At its best, Blade & Soul delivers that rare brand of combat that makes me consider learning these moves for real. And that's why I'm so sad that the rest of the game never reaches the same heights.

Blade & Soul's problems partly spring from its timing. It's only "new" in the West; East Asian players have enjoyed it since it came out in South Korea way back in 2012, when it and other Korean MMORPGs like TERA started to grab headlines for action combat. Blade & Soul is a time capsule of sorts that contains few of the quality-of-life changes introduced to the genre over the past few years, and the usual bugbears strut across the stage here: the wide tunnels for leveling that hint at an open world but don't really deliver it, the torrent of mindless kill-and-fetch quests, and the hyper-sexualized depictions of women and young girls that leave many Westerners either shuddering with shame or giggling at the proportions.

Blade & Soul might be showing its age already, but it doesn't lack for beauty.
Blade & Soul might be showing its age already, but it doesn't lack for beauty.

Still, it does achieve a certain grandeur in parts, whether it's in the intricate weapons or the fantastic landscapes stuffed with cloud-swept pagodas and blossoming woods. Considering its age, it's no surprise some of these landscapes suffer from poor textures and muddy details, but Blade & Soul generally presents them with a degree of style.

The story starts off on a respectable (if predictable) note, when the Hongmoon School gets wiped out, leading to a 45-level-long quest for revenge. The opening quests and cutscenes benefit from a welcome dose of cinematic suspense and camaraderie, but the tale quickly loses momentum in the drudgy march from one hub for kill-and-fetch quests to the next. By Level 15, I'd largely stopped caring about what the people I encountered had to say at all. I just wanted to punch stuff.

And boy, does Blade & Soul oblige. Few MMOs pull off combat better, and each of the seven classes can unleash combos that require watching what players and NPCs are doing in an effort to counter them. It's far more Street Fighter than World of Warcraft, even to an extent unmatched by TERA. Whether I was slamming diminutive Lyn warriors in the face with my oversized axe or rooting Kung Fu Masters as a spell-slinging Force Master, it was always enjoyable.

One perfectly executed combo can mean the difference between life and death in PvP.
One perfectly executed combo can mean the difference between life and death in PvP.

All this comes together to complement a uniquely rewarding PvP experience, which reaches its zenith in the arena mode once players have unlocked their full range of skills at the level cap. Blade & Soul allows lower-level players to try to rough up level-capped folks in the arenas through normalization--a setting that evens out competitors' stats--but that's rarely wise since the absence of complete skills and their boosts from talent trees presents a monstrous disadvantage. Yet it's not impossible. Skill reigns supreme in Blade & Soul (as does a decent ping), and a smart newbie can still technically take down a veteran. A single arena match provides enough evidence of why Blade & Soul enjoys such a healthy esports life in Asia.

Many NPC enemies use skills that players will use in the arenas, which should make for decent PVP training. The problem? They fight at a snail's pace, and it's possible to simply clobber your way through most encounters if you don't mind chugging a healing potion every once in a while.

As it is, both the single-player and group dungeons amount to little more than short jaunts to forgettable thugs. Even the crafting lacks imagination, as it requires little more than placing an order and waiting for a bit. It also tends to lack the lively conversations (and bickering) of a good MMO's chat channel, though it's not through any fault of the players.

Combat with NPCs can be a bit of a joke, but they can still deal some pain if you miss a counter.
Combat with NPCs can be a bit of a joke, but they can still deal some pain if you miss a counter.

As of the time of writing, it's almost impossible to carry on a conversation in many of the game-wide chat channels as they're crammed with gold spammers hawking their illicit wares. It was initially possible to get past the worst of it by leveling a bit, but now the spammer hordes choke up the lines even several hours in. Presuming you can get in. Several days in, the login queues remain obscene, sometimes even with the premium plan that sorts you into a shorter line.

Yet one of the saving graces of Blade & Soul is that you don't have to pay a cent if you don't want to. Most of the time, there's no need. The cash shop mainly deals in cosmetic outfits that run the gamut from racy to grim, and many of these aren't even as impressive as the ones you can get with minimal effort from playing. Everything else mainly aims to make life a little simpler, such as experience-granting food or inventory expansions. As with the best cash shop models, making a purchase sometimes feels like making a donation.

For all its drawbacks, I nevertheless enjoyed Blade & Soul. But when you're not at the level cap, it's a fleeting enjoyment best suited to short bursts. It tries to leverage combat to shoulder the weight of its other, more cumbersome parts, and in the process, even the combat stumbles after long hours of repetition. Despite the strong foundation, I was struggling to stay interested in Blade & Soul at the end of my journey. It does wonders with the blade, yes. But where's the soul?

The Good

  • Active, combo-heavy combat demands full attention
  • Beautiful environments enrich setting and story
  • Fantastic arena PvP mode

The Bad

  • Quests quickly become repetitive and boring
  • Lacks content from the Asian version
  • Short, boring dungeon sequences
  • Bare bones "crafting"

I feel the game is better than a 6 in some ways, you have to understand that this game is not a full out MMO, its a bit of a hybrid of an MMO and an instanced pvp combat game. Its almost like playing street fighter in full 3d and the ability to move around in towns and dungeons and killing random stuff... and many times i almost felt like a street fighter you have a lot of control of each attack compared to some other mmos which you don't. But even saying that, I feel TERA's combat feels a bit better for myself, except PVP in tera has 0 balance at all and at its current state with the broken Brawler class and the unbalance +15 gear has brought, TERA is not a game you should be playing for a good pvp experience.

You forgot to mention the just awful relentless gold spamming that you have to endure playing this. Its a wall of text that is neverending. You can't even block them because the block list only allows 50 people on it. So having any kind of conversation with anyone in region or faction chat is completely impossible. I can't imagine a person actually wanting to give any of these gold sites money... they are so ignorant and rude the way they spam their garbage adverstising, i'd pay NCSoft whatever more the difference then give a single penny to these horrible spammers.

Also the nicknames you choose for the game are carried across all servers, so there is no chance at all your favourite nickname will be available since even if you make a brand new character on another server, that name won't be available because once a name is picked, its taken up on every single server... the only benefit to this system is later on when they have to reduce the amount of servers, people won't be battling over names since all the names are already reserved across every server together as one.

Reviewer is right though, the quests in this game are mostly garbage and dated and not very fun to do... but mostly every MMO has this.

@Yams1980: The gold spamming was fixed today with a patch that has cleaned it up and increased the block list to boot.

@aaronelwhite: I suppose that it is okay that the developer had implemented this, but I do wonder why they had not realized earlier that gold-spammers are going to be a problem.

@Dexyu: Word filter scripts, for example. Messages which you do not want to see may have terms which give away their intent. Word filters can use these terms to automatically block messages from anyone other than people on the player's contact lists.

While I do understand some of those of you here who are complaining about the score that the better parts of this game has not been focused upon, I would remind you that the author had noticed them, as well as the shortfalls of the game.

Sure, Blade & Soul has great PvP - but if you are suggesting that everything else about the game can be ignored, then you are not exactly the kind of consumers that I would consider to be wise.

To me, you are little different from those blokes who buy Call of Duty titles every year for the multiplayer.

Sorry but there are so many aspects in the game you didnt even mention on this review in a good way and then that 6 when game is easily a mid 7ish game for too many reason i can think of when you clearly didnt mention them at all ... Ah , people try it please dont get discouraged with this review , im telling you game is better than this and there are many elements aside what this critic mentioned for you to have fun with.

@AzatiS: These are reviews by specialist sites, and they are published by people who mainly focus on MMO games.

You are demanding specialist reviews from a site that does not even do specialist reviews.

Well you failed to list even one of those things. This is also one of the worst run-on sentences I've ever seen. Regardless, the game is shit.

@fedor: Here ill give you some listed items :

B&S Vs WoW - PVP in B&S is unrivaled by any current MMO plain and simple, there balancing is incredible and requires tonnes of skill to compete at the highest level. If your looking for story elements then WoW is still king.

B&S Vs GW2 - PVP in GW2 is very good and has a strong Esport presence however when it comes down to twitch reaction there is still a slight advantage going for B&S. From a PVE perspective GW2 offered a much better story element and dynamic questing system that made leveling far superior and probably the best available to date.

B&S Vs ESO - Once again a tight competition as ESO has some major merit for its large scale PVP but at the end of the day its combat system is filled with issues and has never felt right since its release. PVE is again going to ESO, no competition here as there is an overwhelming amount of lore and story to be told.

Honestly I could keep going on and on but the end result is B&S is all about end game PVP and with its balancing and fast paced combat its going to be hard to beat. Where it falls short is PVE, its very generic single line story and questing grind is going to drive some mad. But there are some really well done things.

Dungeon Finder A+

Costumes and Gearing system A+

Crafting System B

Cut Scenes B

There really is more that I could go on about but my intent isn't to smash you with walls of text. To give you an idea about me, I am an exclusive MMO player. I have played every triple A launched MMO and for the most part I have found something great about every one that I have engaged in. I currently and actively subscribe to WoW, SWTOR, ESO, and FFXIV but I can tell you 100% that the majority of my year will be spent playing B&S because I love PVP.

Blade & Soul is not deserving of anything greater than a 7/10 and I think that's all the the fan base is looking for. The review is quite poor and a very short read.

@toxicsix: Oh well , you saved me from writing a wall of text. Thanks for a great input but that guy is the typical hater type , even if you come up with 1000 reasons why you think BnS might deserve a bit more praise he wont even bother.

BnS is a good mmorpg with many flaws but also many cool stuff other mmorpgs missing. 6/10 ? Naaah . At least not out of this review which lacked depth in order to convince me what was really wrong ... let alone all the missing mechanics and games attributes making BnS ...BnS.

Sorry but ill stick to my original statement people. Try it , really do it.

EDIT : And the funny issue with critics when it comes to MMORPGs is that for games like WoW , quest repetition , outdated graphics and various other one of the same mechanics and attributes means nothing ... when it comes to games like BnS everything does. Graphics outdated , questing is boring etc etc ... Oh well . My score 7/10.

Very disappointed to see this review and score because it will impact the game's health by likely driving casually interested players away. I'd like to refute your negative points.

Quests quickly become repetitive and boring: Absolutely untrue. Not a single one of the dozens of people that I play with have complained about "boring" quests. This game has some very inventive and fun quests. Is there some repetition? Absolutely. When you're leveling to 45 or over 100 as in WoW, you're going to get some repetition. That is a part of the MMO genre that can't be helped so grading it down because of that bugs me. The quests are fun and the battle keeps things fluid. They are usually fairly quick too, as is the whole leveling process.

Lacks content from the Asian version: Completely unfair to grade it down because of this. It's a fair criticism of the port but grading a game for not having something is ridiculous. Grade it on what's there. Besides, the same content that has taken years to release in Korea is starting to roll out next week - not even a month after the initial release of the game. NCSoft is doing a great job of initiating new content right as most people are hitting level cap.

Short, boring dungeon sequences: WRONG! With the exception of the annoying Darkglimpse dungeon, the dungeons are not boring. They are quick sessions, yes, but that is the point! Instead of long, drawn out dungeons all the way through the game that slow down the leveling process Blade & Soul has fast-paced shorter dungeons so that at least when you're grinding for that weapon breakthrough item you can get it in a reasonable amount of time and keep moving on. I guess you're calling them boring because they aren't end-game like WoW dungeons, but this game has amazing end-game content like that too. Just because it isn't WoW doesn't make it bad.

Bare bones "crafting": Fair criticism and a matter of preference. I like that they tried something new here. It's a bit TOO simple, though, with not enough impact until the end-game. I love the simplified aspect of not making crafting a huge requirement like other MMOs.

This game is about epic story, visuals, and combat. And that's OKAY. It should be graded based on the experience it is trying to provide and not on how closely it looks like your favorite long-running MMO. It's new, it's fun, and everyone that I've played with can't wait to get back in game and play some more. Giving it a 6 overall is ridiculous.

@aaronelwhite: So why does the game bother to have the simplistic systems in the first place?

I get the impression that you are implying that the good parts of the game should be focused on while the lousy parts can be forgiven.

Not everyone can do that - because that's a kind of bias.

@aaronelwhite: imho the review hit some notes, but missed some too

missing content from the Asia version... that just shows how much the review-er doesn't have a clue of the process and is acting like a spoiled brat; Wanting stuff that has 0 logical and economic sense, especially in a F2P game where the developer isn't the publisher.

But the world is generic. Quests are repetitive and too boring and do not have the impact on the world. You can skip all except of the main quest and you would not miss anything important or change the world (you perceive) in any meaningful way.

The world itself is not an active character in the player's eyes, more of a sandbox playground that isn't influenced by the player(s).

Main story is good on it's own, but is placed in a static world that by itself doesn't provide the player the initiative to make a difference.

Or better to say, the carrot isn't always in front of you which makes the whole experience a chore during the whole leveling process (which is a shame).

The design of the endgame PvE fails to establish a "valid" structure that encourages anything except repetition with incremented stats. Upgrade system relies too much on grind and rng to be satisfying.

Imho, the game is a solid 8 if considered a F2P game, but comparing with other (non F2P) MMOs it's 7 at best.

And that is with my "issue" of the gameplay style, that (imho) relies too much on animation cancellation, invulnerability frames and lack of teamwork (holy trinity), making the whole PvE content something like a competition between individuals (in a party) measuring who has the bigger e-peen (even if played with friends).

But i do think that 6 is a too low.

I actually agree with the review for once. Though I'd give it even less, as the game plays as a generic mundane asian mmo. Even the combat doesn't help it one bit, even if it is marginally better than other asian mmos.

As for those days, standards have gone up. Goldeneye 64 was considered an extremely realistic, pretty game... But it obviously looks like crap nowadays. Unless the game is stylized, it'll age really fast.

I disagree with the review and score. Having playing many Korean, American and Japanese MMOs. To give a general comparison between FF14, GW2 and BnS. The game with the best story is GW2, BnS is a close second. The voice acting is superb! Having said that, the worst story and voice acting is FF14, although heaven's ward did improve the story content.

The side quests in BnS are always related to the main story objectives, yes they are boring but every single MMO has the same tedious side quests that don't do anything but provide extra experience. I don't see how you can say they become repetitive and boring when you can hit level 45 in 15 hours. Whereas in guild wards it takes closer to 80hours and FF takes closer to 100+ on your first run through.

Lacking content from Asian version isn't a valid complaint when it's getting an English patch updates, it's normal for it to be behind. Is this your first Korean MMO?

Most of the Heroic dungeons take 20minute, and are fun to do. I don't know where you got the boring from. The other dungeons are solo or just there to get one item and add story elements, not for you to farm.

What crafting and gathering does this game need? There is ONE outfit and it's ALL glamour. For the style of game, the crafting and gathering is well set up.

---

If you had played the game, you should have mentioned the following:

-Obscene amount of money sellers
-Graphics are a bit outdated
-No real PvE endgame after finishing the story except to collect outfits

7.5/10

I recommend giving this game a try. It's overly easy at the beginning but it gets very fun around level 15+. PVP is one of the best i've ever seen and it is solely based around skill. Unless you're a force master, then you're just foobar'd

@G4mBi7: Sorry but it was hard to read what you posted when you start off saying GW2's story was better than FFXIV.. FFXIV may start kinda slow, but picks up heavy after level 35 and since Heavensward is part of the game now, you can't exclude that. There's a reason why it is considered one of, if not the best MMORPG expansions in recent memory.

Guild Wars 2 story is good. but nothing talking about. At least when comparing with FFXIV.

I actually wouldn't mind BnS however it looks like it'll have the same problem that Tera and even GW2 has.. With GW2 After about level 40, you realize the game isn't changing and if you dont PvP, you pretty much are doing the same old stuff all the time. Teras questing is just flat out boring after realize that it doesn't change its formula.

You have your own opinion, but I wouldn't start your statement with "BnS and GW2 have better stories that FFXIV" when proof across most of the boards show other wise.

@blockbuster: WARNING SPOILER ALERT

FF14 was god awful, the voice acting was is still terrible on almost every character especially Minfilia! The ONLY good part of the story of FF14 is the opening cut scene. Final Coil and now Heaven's Ward. However, with how coil was setup. Most people didn't get to experience coil the way it was meant to be. I never excluded heaven's ward but it's incredibly rushed in terms of story. Nidhogg was such a great setup for a villain and could have been exploited with the defense of ishgard. But we never even got to really participate in the dragon song war so excuse me for saying it was mediocre. Not only that but the last 2 patches ruined crafting and gathering behind time gates that make no sense. Not only that but the new HARD raid is a joke. We cleared it in 2 months. There is no end game anymore, nothing to do but wait for the next patch. So please, i understand you love FF14. I do as well but the game is crap in it's current state. Story wise and game play wise. Why do you think so many people have left to play BnS or Black Desert.

@G4mBi7: Now, I would like to focus on one of the query/remark you mentioned: "Is this your first Korean MMO?"

Having done some research, I had noticed that content delays between regions are a perennial problem with Korean MMOs. For the Western regions, TERA had delays for its class-balancing patches, ArcheAge had delays with its guild castle features, and there is a lag for content updates for Aion.

But here's the issue that I have with the implication of your remark: if you are saying that content delays should be an expected norm for Korean MMOs, I very strongly disagree.

I have seen other game-makers, such as Square Enix, that try to mitigate such regional delays. These delays will cause discontentment among people who do not already accept such a "norm", and discontent among the follower-base is not exactly conducive to the marketing of the game.

In my eyes, accepting this "norm" is keeping the bars of demand low, and that is not good for consumers for there would be less incentive for game-makers to add more value to their products.

Maybe it's a matter of culture, since we are talking about Korean MMOs here, but to me, culture is no excuse for tardiness.

@Gelugon_baat: korean mmo is a strange term, as some things apply to some games that originally came from korean developers / for korean market and some stuff doesn't.

If we take a "usual" MMO game, designed for Korean MMO market we should notice several things:

- lots of grinding (and then some more grinding)

- cash shop implementation that are p2w or very close to it

- more-less regular patches that include variety of stuff (balances, content, item shop, vanity etc)

If you take the same game with a western release (some western company is the publisher), you should notice a "few" changes:

- less grind

- new system are implemented or old are changed to a significant degree

- localization is not just pure translation (even lore can change/story/added completely new system and other balances)

- some have exclusive content for that market

- faster shop items updates (because it's not directly connected with the game logic, mostly vanity stuff, mounts etc stuff that relies on basic systems that usually are not different between west and korean versions)

All of that is because some gameplay habits are different between markets, so the same thing doesn't have the same effect on different markets.

So all those changes take time to be developed, tested, patched, then released at the PTS, then the same process with the feedback and then implemented in the public release.

Now add to that the communication troubles (between west and the korean development team), usual bug fixing (that usually is priority) and time needed relay specifications to the korean development team,

Then is the moment new content comes. All the systems that were changed need to be adjusted to the difference between version (more testing, more adjusting, more feedback etc).

Also there is the thing of milking the content to the max possible degree.

All of that takes time (significant amount) and is the main reason why west version can't implement all the content that is available in the Korean version.

Even BDO (Black Desert Online), which is a rare case when a Korean Dev is handling the West release, has "lag" between the versions (again localization - which isn't just translation, its the whole adjustment to a different market / locale).

If you want a TL:DR:

You have 2 buildings, A with an old design and B with a new design.

Adding floors from the building A to the building B (which are different in design) will certainly cause a collapse of the building B at one point (if they are not adjusted to accommodate to the design of building B). That takes time.

@Gelugon_baat: Square Enix isn't a Korean MMO. I played Rappelz and Aion both of which had the Korean server at least one patch ahead of the NA version. We aren't a priority, just be happy we got the game. The patches will come :) I rather they do a good job on them, especially the voice acting than to get a rushed release.

@G4mBi7: "Just be happy we got the game"? Really?

This kind of thinking is why the likes of NCSoft can crank out regional versions piecemeal and still get customers.

For anyone else reading this, don't be like this. This is one way for consumers to be exploited.

@G4mBi7: regarding the lack of content, it doesn't matter the reason. If there's too little content, there's too little content, and the game is worse for it. Best you can argue is for a second take later on, but I find the defense weak even then, when you consider both of your other examples have simultaneous releases and parity between regions.

@BrunoBRS: @G4mBi7:

I agree. There is no excuse for the delay in implementing the content from the Asian version when Soul & Blade's contemporaries don't do the same. Final Fantasy XIV, which G4mBi7, cited did not have this issue.

Also, before you cite other games to back up your argument, G4mBi7, you might want to think through any counter-points that could be derived from your own citations.

@Gelugon_baat: FF14 is a Japanese MMO not a korean with a heavy focus on Japan and NA, not only that but how quickly you forget the state that FF14 was released in. It didn't even have an auction house! The world was empty. We're not talking about a realm reborn, we're talking about the entirety of the game. If you really wanna talk about issues though. FF14 has huge issues with the main quest and side quests. It's over loaded with tedious junk that has no purpose except to be time consuming. I like the BnS setup because the story is engaging, the side quests are straight and to the point and also in the same region as the current Main story quest.

I really don't care what counter point you make, i'm not having a discussion or argument with you. The fact of the matter is that you're wrong plain and simple. Not even going to entertain the idea when everyone i know most people that have raided end game content with me in FF14 agree with me and most have moved onto BnS until the FF14 dev team stop's fucking up the game.

Just as an example from a developer and a business standpoint. If the Korean Version is on patch 8 which added story content, new classes, etc. There is no incentive to release this on a NEW NA release. Longevity means more money and a returning player base over time. You don't release all of your cash shop items, you release some. Then wait a month or two and release more, this is basic business. You're suggestion that the entire game should be translated and release is stupid when they didn't even know if it would be a hit or a flop. Waste of resources.

You don't know the first thing about development or how to run a business.

@G4mBi7: That's not basic business - that's being exploitative. Stupidly exploitative too, if the game-maker thinks that the consumer base won't compare regional versions.

I would say that you are the one who don't know anything about game development or running businesses. That "basic business" which you mentioned is the kind of mistake made by business runners who think that products can exist in a vacuum.

Also, you are shifting the goal-post by citing the original version of Final Fantasy XIV, when I made a link to Realm Reborn.

Furthermore, your citation of that game's quest designs, followed by statement of your preference for Blade and Soul's "straight and to the point" quest progression, gives me the impression that you are tired of the usual busywork, but instead of demanding something that is more complex and interesting, you downgrade to simpler quest designs.

I don't think that you are the best of persons to make critical statements about MMOs here, if you downgrade your demands of the MMOs that you play.

If you are not going to argue with me further after this, then don't bother. However, as long as you make a response and make any statement, expect rebuttals. Also, don't be thinking that you can make declarations like "the fact of the matter is that you're wrong plain and simple" and think that this can be the end-all-be-all argument. This is just lazy shit.

Finally, I want to say this: I wrote all of the above, despite the fact that you have shifted the goal-posts. The argument was about the differences between regional versions, but you shifted over to some other things like quest designs.
