Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Review

  • First Released Oct 4, 2011
    released
  • PC

One of the greatest games of recent years makes its way to the PC with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

Last year, Dark Souls was released on consoles. A towering achievement, its treacherous, interconnected realms offered some of the most absorbing exploration a game has ever conjured, and its intense and grueling combat made victory against even the most common enemies a source of gratification and relief. Now, this masterpiece has made its way to PC as the aptly titled Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. This version adds a few new areas, improves on the console versions in one sense, and falls a bit short of its console counterparts in another. But ultimately, this is the same incredible game that was released on consoles, and if you didn't have the option to play it then, you definitely shouldn't let this opportunity go unseized.

Now Playing: Video Review - Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

You are undead, struggling to fight your way through the realms of Lordran on a quest whose final purpose is anything but clear. Where many games burden you with plot and background lore, Dark Souls lets the places you go tell their own kind of story, one lost in time and shrouded in mystery. The stone ruins at Firelink Shrine, the overrun town known as the Undead Burg, the vast marble halls of Anor Londo--these all speak of a once-prosperous realm rich with history, and rather than spelling it out in detail, Dark Souls lets you wonder about what has dragged this land into its current state of miserable disrepair. Item descriptions and brief conversations with non-player characters occasionally illuminate the smallest aspects of Lordran's past, and over time, you may piece together a reasonably fleshed-out picture of the crisis that has befallen the land. But you needn't concern yourself with these details if they don't interest you. The wondrous realms of Lordran are sure to seduce you whether you care to know their history or not.

Darkroot Garden is so oppressively green that you can almost feel the air get warm and muggy around you. Running along the surreal shores of Ash Lake is like stepping into a dream. Locations like Anor Londo and the duke's archives fuse faded opulence with grand machinery in a way that's reminiscent of locations in the classic adventure game Myst, and like the realms of that game, these places have a way of staying in your head even when you're not playing. Terrific sound design is a huge factor in Dark Souls' ability to pull you in. Your steps echo convincingly in vast chambers. A heavy suit of armor clangs with every step you take. The strange noises a feared creature makes may send shivers up your spine before you even lay eyes on it.

Dude, what happened to your face?
Dude, what happened to your face?

From almost your earliest steps in this dangerous world, you're beset by enemies, and you quickly learn to never let your guard down. Even the most common and clumsy enemies you encounter have attacks that can make short work of you if you're not careful. Melee combat is straightforward; there are no elaborate combos to learn, and Dark Souls certainly doesn't need them. With the small assortment of attacks, blocks, parries, and evasive maneuvers at your disposal, the combat in Dark Souls becomes a deadly dance in which each of your strikes that hits its target is a small victory and each potentially devastating attack from an enemy that you narrowly evade offers a new lease on life. Just be aware that poorly implemented mouse and keyboard support makes playing the game that way much too unwieldy; the game demands a controller.

Each new area brings with it challenging new enemies, as varied and memorable in their designs as they are in their techniques. Huge knights slumber in a forest, slowly and menacingly getting to their feet when you draw near. In the painted world of Ariamis, foul abominations with repulsive toxic sacs around their heads threaten to poison you when you deliver the killing blow. And you won't soon forget the first time you're cursed by the big-eyed basilisks of the depths, as your body becomes covered in a crystalline growth and you freeze in a pained gesture as death takes you.

There's a wide variety of weapons to acquire and use, with each type offering a different fighting style. (Some swords are for swinging, and others are for thrusting, for example.) There's also a good assortment of weapon enhancement options. As you progress and collect crafting items, you find that you can have a blacksmith make your weapons more powerful, and eventually imbue them with effects like lightning or fire. Finding a better weapon or making your existing weapon more powerful isn't just a matter of added convenience; it can be the difference between survival and failure. And if you prefer to keep your distance from foes, bows and a diverse assortment of magic spells can be very effective, though you still need to frequently tangle with enemies in intense, close-quarters battles.

There's a wonderful sense of history to Dark Souls' varied, frequently beautiful realms.
There's a wonderful sense of history to Dark Souls' varied, frequently beautiful realms.

The stakes can be high as you venture through Dark Souls, making your determination to survive and persevere that much greater. As you vanquish enemies, you collect souls, which can be spent to level up your character, or to purchase items and services from the few blacksmiths and merchants eking out an existence in certain corners of the world. These souls are a precious commodity indeed, and should you fall in battle (and you will), your souls fall with you. However, all is not immediately lost. If, in your next life, you can make it back to the spot of your previous demise and touch your bloodstain, you regain the souls you had acquired. Perish again without recovering them, however, and they disappear forever. It's a crushing feeling to die, knowing that it means the permanent loss of a significant number of hard-earned souls, but it's precisely that danger that makes the struggle to stay alive so exciting.

In each realm of Dark Souls, there are bonfires that offer your only real sanctuary from the constant dangers you face. It's only at these locations that you can spend souls to level up, and when you perish, you restart from the last bonfire at which you rested. Because they serve as checkpoints on your journey, happening upon one can bring with it a tremendous sense of relief, since you know you won't need to overcome the dangers you faced to get here again. That feeling of relief is short-lived though, because you must soon press on into the unknown dangers that lie ahead.

The sense of trepidation that comes with forging on into unknown realms of Dark Souls doesn't subside after you've played the game for an hour or 10 or 20. It is a sustained feeling that arises out of the fact that you rarely know what lies around the next corner, or if you do, you haven't yet managed to overcome the challenges that await you there. That feeling of dread finds tremendous release in those moments when you finally conquer the boss of an area, and in the discoveries of the many shortcuts that link Lordran's realms in often surprising ways and give you the liberty to bypass long stretches you've conquered at least once.

In fact, few games offer a sense of exploration and discovery as rich and rewarding as that of Dark Souls . There is no hand-holding here, no NPC companion or helpful sign telling you which way to go next. Your discoveries are yours alone, and that makes them all the more gratifying. That's not to say that there is no assistance available for the wandering warrior, though. Players can scrawl messages on the ground that serve as clues or warnings to other players. It's a wonderful system that serves to remind you, as do the fleeting, ghostly glimpses you occasionally catch of other adventurers fighting their own battles, that although you are solitary, you aren't alone in your struggles.

Dark Souls is a shared experience in which each player must mostly fight his or her own battles. However, you can call on assistance in moments of need. Players can leave summon signs, and you can summon one or two of these players to your world to help you take on the boss of an area. (You can also leave your own summon sign, offering your assistance to other players.) These connections are fleeting--win or lose against the boss, players are promptly returned to their own worlds--but the impact they have on your journey can be tremendous. Not all connections with other players are benevolent, though. Under certain circumstances, other players can invade your world with the intention of seeking you out and defeating you. It's terrifying to be deep into a dangerous realm and get the notification that your world has been invaded. It's just another example of the ways in which Dark Souls keeps you constantly alert and a little afraid.

The battle with Artorias is one of the best and most challenging in the game.
The battle with Artorias is one of the best and most challenging in the game.

Unfortunately, summoning and invading are somewhat spottier on the PC than they were on consoles. When attempting to summon other players to your world, you may more often than not get a "Summoning Failed" message. Additionally, the PC version is locked by default at a resolution of 1024x720, though a user-created mod is available that resolves this issue. However, the PC version improves on its console counterparts in terms of performance; where the console versions suffer from severe frame rate drops in the area known as Blighttown, the PC version does not.

Most noteworthy in the Prepare to Die Edition is the added content, called Artorias of the Abyss. This content adds new areas that take you back into Lordran's past and find you going toe-to-toe with figures who loom large in Dark Souls' lore. Like many things about Dark Souls, the way in which you access Artorias of the Abyss is shrouded in mystery, and unless you investigate the world thoroughly and pay close attention to item descriptions (or just look up the instructions online), you might miss it.

That would be a shame, as the content thoroughly holds its own when added to the existing game. The bright forests of the Royal Wood offer an intriguing glimpse at the Lordran that once was, and the enemies who populate this land are as memorable as the rest of Dark Souls' fantastic stable of adversaries. Particularly excellent is a battle with the knight Artorias, a fearsome foe even by the standards of Dark Souls' challenging bosses. His appearance tells its own story; his armor drips with a purple substance that suggests the corruption that has befallen the once-noble knight, while his left arm hangs from him uselessly, a dead thing. He is frighteningly agile and powerful, and vanquishing him is one of the sweetest victories to be had in a game full of rewarding challenges.

Dark Souls is a game of tremendous beauty and unfettered imagination.
Dark Souls is a game of tremendous beauty and unfettered imagination.

Also in this new realm is the Battle of Stoicism, an arena for player-vs.-player battles. Here, you can partake in one-on-one, two-on-two, or four-player deathmatch battles with nothing at stake but leaderboard glory. Sadly, a number of issues make the arena a frustrating place. It's not unusual to have to wait several minutes or more to be matched with an opponent. (This is assuming you're playing the one-on-one battles, which are much more heavily populated than the other types.) Once you are paired up with a foe and dropped into the arena to see which of you can defeat the other the most times in a three-minute period, you can expect lag to plague your battle, as your opponent hops around the screen without animating properly and you sometimes take damage despite the fact that your opponent didn't appear to hit you. The arena's presence doesn't harm the overall game since it's entirely optional, but it doesn't bring much to it, either.

Despite this minor disappointment, Dark Souls remains one of the greatest games of recent years. There's so much to do and to discover in its beautiful and frightening world. You might encounter and join one of nine covenants, each with its own benefits and agendas. You might find that one NPC has murdered another and that you can invade the killer's world as a spirit of vengeance. The genius of Dark Souls isn't just in its environments, or its monsters, its thrilling combat, or the unusual and exciting ways in which players are connected. It's in the uncompromising way it throws conventional wisdom to the wind, dropping you into its dangerous world without guidance, making you fend for yourself, and teaching you to shrug off defeat time and time again to finally earn victory. That this vast and unforgettable masterpiece is now only $40 makes the decision to play it even easier.

I wanted to enjoy this game, as so many others have said, but putting aside the complaints about difficulties with resolution, control-scheme etc., I found myself asking where the story was. Clearly something epic has happened in this world, but one is never allowed to learn about the lore from within the game, other than unsatisfying snippets that are intentionally obtuse. Contrast this issue with the story in a game like Skyrim, and it becomes a glaring example of a missed opportunity. I enjoy learning about characters I meet in RPGs, I enjoy learning about the history of the world I find myself in, and I enjoy seeing fictional communities going about their days, all of which is either totally absent or merely hinted at in this installment of Dark Souls. Of course no single aspect of a game will typically appeal to every player, but to laud this title because it doesn’t “burden” a player with plot and backstory is a real stretch. Who am I? Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing? Who am I supposed to be talking to? What’s happened to bring this place to ruin? Will anything I do fix it? The game teases at hints to the answers, but mostly fails to offer any satisfying account. It’s a frustrating contrast to the impressive world design and combat challenge.

Main caveat to this game is that it is best played with a console type controller. I play PC games, not console games. I expect to be able to play with a keyboard and mouse. I do not want to play a PC game with a controller. I don't think it is too much to ask for a port of a console game to have adequate keyboard and mouse controls. I tried to play the game with K&M and it was totally unwieldy. I see there are some mods that may make it easier to play K&M, but you shouldn't have to use mods to play a game that should have had the capability in the first place.

IS this game a fucking joke? Im not gonna lie, I purchased it on pC becouse I couldnt play it on xbox 360 becouse it was way too time consuming and hard for me with that difficulty, so I thought I use a trainer for the PC version. Then i realized that this game runs on WIN 7 in windowed mode??? and even then it crashes after the logos? And its such a console rip, that they kept the usual console autosave warning indication in the beginning. How the hell did this game received a 9.5???? I actually had to go to pirate sites for help, not that unusual for me, but to get help (useless) from a pirate site only to get this shit run fullscreen ... thats disgusting

@Banyek Ditto here.

Got this from Steam on special for $4.99. First challenge of the game was getting it to actually run. Kept crashing on startup. Read somewhere I needed to remove Games for Windows Live, download a new version, run install as administrator in Windows 7 compatibility mode (on W8 64bit). The damn thing finally started.

Challenge #2 of the game was getting around the controls. It is a straight xbox rip, feels like running an xbox emulator. Equipment management is weird, to say the least. Found a broadsword and a shield, which did not show on the equipment list. Until I realised there is another place where the found stuff can be transferred to the inventory. Why? What’s wrong with stash-left character-right interface, transfer things around as you like?

OK, now that I got the hang of it, I thought I’m going to enjoy a few pleasurable hours a-la-Skyrim. Wrong! Found myself above some dungeon boss who kills me in two blows. And then back to the beginning. It’s Tomb Raider all over again!

The reviewers should really say don’t bother, unless you are grounded teenager on school holidays (or a video game reviewer)!

Right-click, uninstall, forget…

i got this game from my buddy after ive seen all these reviews of how awesome it was. the PC version. when i launched it the game looked weird to me in the menus. but when i finally started it i was like wtf. it is as if they took the ps or xbox version, and printed ''PC'' on the case. i have played a lot of games, but this one is unplayable for me. yes, unplayable. maybe if i had a ps/xbox gamepad, but i dont and and i dont want to. why does this game have such a high score and on THIS site beats the hell out of me, but stay away from this crap. PC version anyway.

Not really, you can use pots but you have be careful so you don't get hit while using it, plus you only have a maximum of 5, 10, 15 or 20 pots since the nearest bonfire depending on how much you have kindled there.

I played Demon Souls and enjoyed it on PS3, as PS3 exclusive.

I then purchased Dark Souls on PC thanks to people - who did not play Demon Souls for most - who said it was so wonderful. 'People' including this review and its so high score.

But the PC port is very lame, to the point of insulting its gamers. Having it not mentioned in the review is more than odd.

And then, it isn't understandable why people frown at people complaining about the port itself. It seems we paid for 'the Xbox playable parts', with lame graphics and lame base resolution. Makes me still wonder why Xbox is a gaming platform, with this shit resolution.

On PC, the game is locked to 1024x720 resolution. Which is damn silly. That's more than a "glitch", it makes the game unworthy.

Even KOTOR, a PC game of 2003 mind you, ten years ago, accepts 1600x1200 resolution and is still playable now.

It's as if they hacked their own game to make it work on PC, and then did not even care to patch or fix it even with 300 000 sales. That's an insult we take at our face.

Now, I'll try these DSfix and other things, hoping to enjoy the game later, but for me it looked as a broken downgrade more than a good sequel, and all this I believe because of this broken port.

If only they would have sticked to PS3 Exclusive! I'll have a shiny Blu-ray with top resolution scenes (the opening scene of Demon Souls movie was so grand). But instead they had to look for Xbox and even worse, downgrade to it, and then make all of us eat this low resolution.

This isn't a suitable review.

I hope the various mods will make me able to enjoy the game.

I heard about this game from some time, finally i bought it when they had discount on steam and i must say i congratulate myself for waiting. If I would have paid 50 bucks for this game i would scream in pain. I saw the review with such a hype about how challenging the fights are. Well, challenging my ass ... the biggest challenge in this game is to position you camera when bosses are so big you can't even see them, see their moves etc. Actually this game is difficult because you have to play it with a controller, and is not designed to play it with mouse, probably because it would be so much easy. The difficulty comes also from performing combination for various hits which on a keyboard are so much easy when you hit a key. The big drawback of this game is that you have to worry more about camera positioning than anything else and this will be the reason you will die most of the time.

The graphics is worse than Skyrim because of the resolution and giving a game a 9.5 with that poor graphic raises a lots of questions about reviewer objectivity. Yes, in this type of games graphics are a big deal. The most frustrating thing is that after one year they still did not fixed the resolution problem

@dexfm So just play it with a controller, it was designed to be played with a controller and the game itself even encourages you to play with a controller. I don't think I've ever died from a camera issue playing Dark Souls with a controller.

I honestly can't fathom how this game caught on. It is easily one of the most ridiculous pieces of trash I have ever had the misfortune of coming upon. The fact that it has a loyal fanbase just makes it all the more frustrating how bad it is.

The PC port is terrible, we all know that. You can fix it with DSFix. Windows Live, yada yada.

The game is difficult, sure, but the difficulty doesn't come from dodging enemy attacks, forming strategies, or picking stats.

The brunt of the difficulty comes from understanding the stats sheet which is so poorly translated into English it is almost incomprihensible. It comes from bad camera angles when you go into a corner and the camera sits behind a piece of cloth. It comes from monsters that respawn repeatedly even after you've killed them because the game arbitrarily throws a huge boulder in your face with no warning. It comes from being unable to play with mouse and keyboard because the default controls are unusable. It comes from help tips and tooltips that don't make any sense due to translation errors or don't work when you follow them in the early tutorial. You're left to pick up the pieces. You're going to die hundreds of times before you even understand the controls and all of its myriad of flaws.

When you do, there is some enjoyment to be had but frankly I appreciate my sanity enough to the point where I don't want to go through all these flaws to experience this supposedly good game waiting for me afterwards.

This deserves a 6.0 at best. I cannot fathom how it could've gotten a 9.5 and a huge fan following. It blows my mind. And I'm not one to shy away from difficult games - I attend Dreamhack WInter for tournaments every year and I get good spots in quite a few of them.

Honest to god, I Wanna be the Guy has less frustrating "challenges" than this game. What the ****, everybody?!

Make up your mind sport. Is it the most ridiculous piece of trash you've ever come upon... or a 6? It can't be both.

Look we get it. You don't like difficult games. You're more of a Call of Duty guy. But why crap all over this game because it's too hard for you?

@TrevorBG @Kunasha Why is everyone telling Dark Souls haters to play COD, or that they are COD kind of guys? Fisrt of all, wether a COD game is difficult or not depends on the difficulty settings that is entirely your decision.(thats an option a decent game used to have) I stil remember the first cod game on hardest, it was almost one shot death. But enough of COD. Lets take me for example.I hate dark Souls too, I think it looks ugly, the game-level design is mediocre, and the difficulty gets to a point, where its just timeconsuming. The character and monster, bosses design is pretty good, but the fight is nothing but memorizing the movements of the enemy, and then be lucky as hell .. The PC port was basically stealing money, but thats technical stuff so lets not get there. The fun in this game is coming from the satisfaction you get when getting trough a section. If youre a player , who likes that sort of masochistic satisfaction then Dark Souls is the number 1 game for you, but if you just like to sit back and relax with some story oriented shooter or RPG, thay the **** away from this crap!

@Banyek Game level design is mediocre ? It seems you didn't get far in the game if you think the level design is mediocre. Most of the levels in the game are interconnected and full of secrets that draw you in. I get why the pc version of the game gets so much hate, but overall the game is great. It may have poor graphics, but in return it offers great art and design.

The storytelling of these game is on a whole other level. All you get is pieces of lore scattered through the world in the form of various notes, NPC conversations and hints in the surroundings. This forces you to read about the game's story and lore outside the game itself or to make your own assumptions during the playtrough. Very few games today keep you interested in them, even when you stop playing.

On top of that the gameplay is pretty fun, even if you have to fight hoards of enemies over and over again, it never really gets boring because they can still smash you to bits if you lose focus for even a moment. After I started playing the souls games, almost every other game seems bland in comparison.

Oh yeah, I forgot the lighting. Your eyes can adjust to bright colors, but not dark colors. So when you randomly happen to look at something slightly brighter than the surroundings, everything else becomes pitchblack. Then you die. Brilliant ****ing camera really is brilliant.

Alright, that's all I'll put here.

Ah Steam Sales. Got this game a few days ago and it is utterly brilliant. I'm about 10 hours in and getting my ass kicked the whole way. I both love and hate this game. The challenge is refreshing and after you actually figure out what the hell you are doing well... it's really just as hard but still, you at least know why you're dying.

Now I'm just day dreaming about how great is going to be to play this with the Oculus Rift.

The PC port is goddamn terrible. And even if you put all those issues aside the game still not good nor interesting enough to have a 9.5. Personally I would give 7.5 score. 6.0 for the PC port.

Best game ever!

The sheer variety and detail in the enemies, bosses and locations is staggering - It's like 2.5 games merged. It reminds me of a action version of the old Dragon's Lair game.

I had this for the 360 and loved every second of it, most people who finish it, myself included, go bad for NG+ and subsequent play-throughs. I bought this at full price and it was best video game deal ever. This game is so addictive. I you loved this and are jonsing for more, and can't wait for DS2 and own a PS3, Demon's Souls is easier, and not as good but still damn fine game in it's own right, I highly recommend these games to anyone who love action RPGs.

Here is the thing, this game is for hardcore gamers who like rpg games twisted with adventure, a high level of difficulty and fantasy, yeah japanese fantasy too. If you explore (this game gives you the opportunity to explore everything) you'll find secret items, hidden areas (a lot), hidden bosses and a lot of shortcuts which connect different levels of the game with each other. You need to be smart when you forge your weapons, when you buy something, trade or when you level up, in every new gameplay you can take different decisions. This game is not for everyone, not for kids for sure and not for first person shooter and action gamers who want explosions, ultimate power in their hands, a direct storyline and straight-through levels. If you liked Castlevania games, Shadow of The Colossus, Ico or Skyrim, you'll love this one. You need to have patience, be strategic and watch your step. The gameplay is unique, the levels are unique, the soundtracks is unique and everything else. So this game is just for a small % out there who like fantasy, unique and rpg games, of course there are kids and noobs who say this is crap, bad graphics, difficult and bla bla, but they're just noobs. If you wanna play it, don't think twice. For me this is the best game ever, a masterpiece for the minority.

I'm about halfway thru this game. And it is awesome. I haven't felt this entranced by a world since Metroid Prime. I'm using a xbox 360 controller plugged into my pc, and it works great. Awesome game, one of the best ever.

"Some PC-specific technical issues" but that is not enough to give it a lower score huh? I mean if the game for pc, for which you reviewed this, doesn't work properly then that's just a minor thing right? pff seriously, do a better (ie. more accurate) and more professional job with reviews please.

Not sure why people say this game is broken and you have to have patches/mods on the PC version. I've been playing the game without having any of the mods or patches and it works fine. Heck I even played the game with the PC controls and they worked fine. Idk maybe they fixed this later on, or maybe most of the people who are having issues just suck at the game, or maybe they haven't even tried it?

Everyone keeps saying that the game is total crap on PC. I wonder how many of those people actually played it... I have about 60 hours played on the Xbox version and about 35 hours played on the PC version. I installed the DSfix mod (which is widely known as being the first thing to do when you get the PC version) and high resolution text mods before starting and I've never had a single problem. The game runs BETTER on my PC than it did on my Xbox, running at 60 fps 1080p instead of 30 fps 720p. For reference, my GPU is a GTX 560 Ti. Anyone who instantly says the game is total crap on PC either never tried it or doesn't have a decent gaming rig.

Awesome Awesome Awesome game. It reminds me of Myst, but with epic fantasy style combat! The controls were super wonky at first. And it doesn't help that the game is notoriously HARD... but please give it a chance to break in. Also, the controls are completely customizable which helps a ton to make keys more convenient to hit. Once your rolling, prepare to enjoy this challenging D&D-esque game that imo is a healthy cross between god of war and skyrim (with a wayyyyyy better storyline obviously)

"Keyboard and mouse are unwieldy", controller not really optional... well what the HECK! If I wanted a flipping console game, I would buy a console.

Oh, btw too. I don't know how Gamespot lists a game as Single Player or Multi Player but Steam at least gave DS:PtDE both single and multiplayer ratings. You should know that even if you thing you are playing the game single player if your character state is Human and you are 'online' you can be attacked by PvP foes. To avoid the multi player PvP foes you can either keep your PC dead (Hollowed) or force GFWL to log you on 'offline' by physically disconnecting from the Internet. Imho this game is _not_ single player--it is multiplayer online only with this PvP element unless you stick to one of the trick methods mentioned above. Have fun...

Gamespot should reevaluate this review of DS:PtDE and give it a 7.0. Some gamers just love that fact that there is no in-game mapping or direction except to travel a path you think you haven't traveled before until totally lost. I strongly suggest drawing your own crude map(s) and read FAST before location names and NPC locations disappear--especially if using a SSD where load times are so fast info pops on the screen for only a few seconds before you are once again lost. If you want to move along with some pace get a guide or walkthrough too. And btw you will just love dying repeatedly and not respawning in some cases anywhere near where you died. It is just a fantastic game of torture! Believe me I have had so many gamers tell me on Steam's forum that all this was by intentional design. Although I finished the game with trying difficulty I have it lined out on my list to remind me not to buy DS2 until it's (once it is realeased) clear you gamers like it a whole lot more then this PtD. For me it isn't the port that was lacking at all--I used a 360 controller--it was simply all the decent RPG design features of a game that were missing. Enjoy! Your mileage must very if you like this sort of gaming misery.

When talking about the PC version of Dark Souls, Yui Tanimura, director of Dark Souls II, said that "a lot of it was not very well done, sort of half-assed,". http://www.gamespot.com/news/dark-souls-pc-port-was-half-assed-says-director-6406838

I think this quote may be enough to attest that Petit just ain't a good reviewer, right? Or at least that this review in particular was half-assed too? I mean, even the developers admit this was a pretty bad port.

@snxx This coming from a culture where, supposedly, if you can't (or won't) do something right, better to not do it at all. They seem to make exceptions for PC ports and speaking English.

@snxx couldn't agree more, bought the game after it got a kick-ass 9.5(should have glanced over the user score)i swear alt+f4 the game after 30 mins it was downright horrible to say the least, the most shoddy pc port ever!!how can this game get more than a 7 let alone the astonishing 9.5??

Anyone that thinks this game doesn't deserve a 9.5 didn't really understand what is so great about this game. It's a game of subtlety of story, feeding you just enough information to make you want to know and seek out more. It's a game with an incredibly complex combat system that has a wide range of possible attacks / defenses. Granted, it's not for everyone and PC people really need to know that before purchasing. I highly recommend renting it for a console to see if it's your style of game before buy the best version (PC) and playing it in HD.

Do you need to have the original PS3 Dark Souls game to be able to play the Prepare to Die Edition? Or it's a stand alone for PS3?

@DiogoLakai I don't have a ps3 but it should be a stand alone like fallout 3 game of the year edition was.
