Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls Review

  • First Released May 15, 2012
    released
  • PC

Diabolical by design.

What motivates the heroes of Sanctuary to battle the forces that threaten humanity? Is it an unwavering desire to do what's right? Or is it a thirst for more power, more riches, and more stuff? Whatever it is, Reaper of Souls has it. This expansion adds a decent new character class, a great new campaign act, and most significantly, Adventure mode, a devious Blizzard concoction calculated to make Diablo III's existing content more rewarding--and more addictive--than it has been in the past.

The angel of death, Malthael, is the force threatening humanity in the new campaign chapter, and the impressive opening cutscene establishes him as a fearsome adversary indeed, showing us why he's called the reaper of souls. In a bid to end the conflict between angels and demons once and for all, Malthael is slaughtering humankind and adding the dead to his ever-growing armies. He's a terrific and terrifying villain, and it's just too bad that he doesn't show up a bit more between his show-stopping entrance and the challenging boss battle that concludes the act.

Now Playing: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Video Review

Your journey to confront Malthael takes you through the most grim and beautiful locations Diablo III has yet featured. Absent here is any hint of the life and color that sometimes clawed their way into the settings for the first four acts. Instead, you explore the gloomy city of Westmarch on one of the worst nights in its history. Later, in an impressive moment, you stand atop a massive battering ram as it smashes open the gates of the fortress of Pandemonium, and then venture into the eerie ethereal realm that lies beyond. If you like your Diablo dark, you'll be pleased to find that act five starts that way and stays that way. It's also noticeably a bit tougher than the acts that precede it, throwing more swarms of monsters at you more frequently. Malthael is determined to give your clicking finger a workout.

Urzael, one of act five's new bosses, is a fierce and fiery foe.
Urzael, one of act five's new bosses, is a fierce and fiery foe.

Reaper of Souls raises the level cap to 70, giving each class new active and passive skills to unlock. Playing through act five using my demon hunter, I made frequent use of her new vengeance skill, which tremendously increases the amount of damage you deal for 15 seconds. And the expansion introduces a new class, the crusader, a holy warrior who employs a mix of melee and ranged attacks. Crusaders feel weighty and formidable, able to bash foes with shields and cut a swath through enemies with flails, while also making use of defensive skills to manage the danger, like the ability to temporarily blind nearby enemies. They're a fine addition to Diablo III's existing pantheon of powerful heroes.

But the most significant addition Reaper of Souls brings to Diablo III is Adventure mode. Unlocked once you've defeated Malthael, Adventure mode gives you bite-size bounties to tackle in every region across Diablo III's five acts, making it a great way to accomplish something meaningful even if you can play for only 15 minutes or so. Bounties have goals like killing a specific boss or clearing a certain dungeon of monsters, and they reward you with gold, experience, and a new item called blood shards, usable at specific merchants. Completing all five bounties in an act earns you a Horadric cache, which might contain some sweet gear.

The best rewards, however, come once you collect five rift keystone fragments from doing bounties, and can then open a nephalem rift. These randomized dungeons are visually striking for the ways in which they combine tilesets from familiar locations with different lighting effects, and conquering one of these dungeons earns you some quality loot. Diablo III is, at its core, a game about addiction. It tries to keep you coming back by tempting you with increasingly alluring rewards. With Adventure mode, Diablo III now has a way to get bigger, better rewards to you faster than it has before.

Death maidens are maidens who come bearing death. Also, they're really tall.
Death maidens are maidens who come bearing death. Also, they're really tall.

And if you're not happy with a particular piece of loot you earn, there's now a new artisan, the mystic, who can replace one randomly generated property on a piece of gear for you; it's a bit of a gamble, but you might end up with something better. She can also change the appearance of your items, turning your armor into something that looks more stylish or making your helm look like a hood.

If you've played Diablo III before and found that it wasn't for you, the changes Reaper of Souls makes to the game won't be far-reaching enough to change your mind. Reaper gives those who already liked Diablo III more of what they already liked about it. Adventure mode leverages Diablo III's existing content in a clever way, and with its haunting settings and memorable villain, act five is the best chapter in the game's campaign. If you're looking for reasons to keep on clicking, Reaper of Souls has plenty.

The Good

  • New story content features haunting locations and a great villain
  • The rewarding Adventure mode revitalizes Diablo III's existing content
  • Also adds a new class, cool new skills, and a new artisan to the game

The Bad

About the Author

Carolyn spent some time playing as a crusader and exploring Adventure mode on a test realm set up by Blizzard prior to the expansion's release. She played through the new campaign content once the expansion went live. She prefers not to be reminded that she has now spent well over 100 hours playing Diablo III.

And it's not even about the score. The score is irrelevant. I would just like to read a review where the reviewer plays the game for more than 4-5 hours (i.e. bare minimum) before getting paid to opine.

How about putting in a little effort every know and again? Is that so hard to ask? I mean, I know that LAST THING Caro wants to do in her position at GameSpot is actually play and review games, but do you think maybe she could hunker down for once and, like, do her job?

@no_concern Go to IGN man. They still haven't cashed in a review. And if you think this is bad, consider the sites that had a review in within 12 hours of release. Zzzzzz. Gamespot is just one site, and while I agree that this review is a bit of a joke (minimal details for a huge release and a middle of the ground not-too-good not-too-bad score) it IS just this one persons opinion. And if you are worried about this games metacritic and reception, just don't be, it is a well-loved expansion and its metacritic is reflecting that. Burning Crusade got a 91 metacritic and WC3: TFT got an 88. These are two of the best expansions I can think of, and currently RoS has an 86. That is really really good for an expansion.

Notice how none of her screenshots are higher than level 63. How long did you actually play before you phoned in this lazy detail-free review that you got paid money to do? 4-5 hours?

Seriously, how long did you actually play Reaper of Souls and what level your one 60+ class? Did you ever even get to hell difficulty on vanilla D3?

I call shenanigans. Shame on you Gamespot. You couldn't find a reviewer on staff that has put more than 5 hours into the game to give a decent review?

Notice how Carolyn is clever with her words, she mentions the level cap and playing through the new act to get you to think she actually got to level 70 when in reality she probably played this expansion for the bare minimum amount of time it takes to get through the new act then phoned in her review, just like she did with D3 in which she only got to the early 40s.

Her reviews are just so lazy, they fit perfectly with the lazy new integer review system.

This seems like more of a "preview" than a review. There was no mention of the new loot system or the modifiers on legendaries that can greatly change the way your characer plays. There's also no mention of the new enchanting system (?). I'm not sure how you justify the 8 score when you list nothing under the "bad" section. What could have made it a 10?

I didn't like the game when it came out but I definitely do now. So this expansion has very much changed my opinion of the game and I think it would change the minds of others as well if you talked about the new items and how there's actually a pretty deep character customization going on (though it's not immediately obvious) when you factor in the new Paragon system (also not mentioned in the review), the revamped skills (many of which synergize with each other), and some pretty wild legendary modifiers such as Goldwrap which buffs your armor when you pick up coins, or the Puzzle Ring which summons treasure goblins (there are better examples but I can't think of the item names right now).

In my opinion, and as a long time fan of Diablo 1 and 2, they have finally "fixed" Diablo 3 and made it a worthy sequel and a game (like D2) that I expect to keep installed for years to come. My only complaint is that there aren't enough uses for blood shards (also not mentioned in the review).

It's going to be tough to get me to pick this up again. I still hate the character building and the "Disney's Diablo" aesthetic. After playing and experiencing the character building in PoE, D3 just can't compare. The changes do sound great, though. I want to want it, but I don't yet.

I was one that thought having auction house in the game was a good idea. I felt that they should have just gotten rid of the real money auction house and kept the gold one. The problem was that i think blizzard wanted to make sure that people would use the auction house so they made the drop rate bad on the higher level epic loot. Because of this people really only could get really nice loot through the auction. This caused the game to fail for alot folks. The auction should have been and extra tool to get gear and not the main way of getting gear. The game would still been fine if they just had increase the drop rate.

This is one of the biggest turnarounds I've ever seen in a game. I shelved this (original Diablo 3) a few months after release, citing the awful AH as the main culprit. Nixing the AH was the most important step they could have made, and did. Grinding for loot is once again a blast and the bounties keep me playing beyond the campaign. This is what the original attempt should have been. Kudos Blizz!

oh nice im going to try and play the game again from level 1 new character i played the day 1 and finish the unpatched inferno after getting patched got disappointed with the game and stopped kinda annoying how people complaining they could not finish the hardest difficulty on that month its not like you had to finish that part. seems to have improved a lot and the new loot system for those who doesn't want to play many hours which i really need atm... i remember running hours of hours in a dungeon but getting a legendary only once while legendary wasn't really that good at that time anyway

God they caved so hard to the whiners. I started a Crusader, legendary items dropping all over the place. Its just stupid. Half my gear at level 20 were legendary items.

@JRD1912 Actually you mentioned you started a new character. There is increased Legendary drops for characters 1 - 59, that's probably the reason you found more legendaries than normal.

But they didn't "cave" to the whiners, what they did was established what they wanted to be. And that was a more casual game that a lot wider range of people could enjoy no matter how many hours you had to play. And there is enough content to keep people occupied for awhile, if you like these types of games.

That being said, if you are looking for a more hardcore game, I highly recommend you try out Path of Exile.

@JRD1912 Then start moving the slider up on Torment difficulty. The range of difficulty scales is wider than ever. Low difficulties are tourist mode, but moving the scale up on Torment lets you level like you're playing un-patched Inferno.

@vlainstrike @JRD1912 It not just legendary items. I mean I havent played in a year or w/e, but one run on hard with my old chars in the new act and my health went from 50k to 200k. My dam at least doubled. Its ridiculous. The drops needed a bump, not triple everything out there to make people interested again. Too much too fast of anything just makes you burn out that much quicker.

@JRD1912 @g0nz0j03 I put alot of time into D3 originally, and the grind just got boring. So I switched to POE for a while and now I'm back.

Before patch 2.0.1 came out I was actually finding a good amount of legendaries...not sure if they buffed it before that. But the legendaries were plain and boring. You say the legendaries should mean something, but most of the time they did not. It seemed that every item pretty much did the same thing and, unless you rolled something with vit and your primary stat, it was useless.

I love how they added very distinct attributes to certain legendaries to make them feel like legendaries.

And even if the majority of legendaries found suck, I find this grind way more enjoyable than I did with Diablo 3. Since Blizzard did make the change, I'm sure the majority agreed.

Also, new characters are guaranteed legendaries for killing act bosses the first time. But, legendaries under 70 are meaningless anyway so I don't see a problem with it.

@JRD1912 @g0nz0j03 In an attempt to transition to the newer loot they raised the bar. It's still quite challenging to get good loot once you reach the higher levels, at least if you want to play above the normal/hard difficulties.

@JRD1912 @g0nz0j03 I can understand that. I haven't played the expansion at all yet, but I did log in to try out the loot 2.0 a couple weeks ago and was amazed at how quickly I was able to upgrade my wizard's gear (gear that took a couple hundred hours and several million gold on the AH to get), but I wasn't as big of a fan of how the loot system was before.

I played hundreds of hours, saw only two legendaries, none of which were for higher than level 30, and both rolled crappy stats. There's got to be a middle ground between a loot system that makes things totally insignificant and one that just constantly throat punches you with RNG. I feel this is it.

@g0nz0j03 Seems overboard. Legendary was supposed to mean something. I hadnt played in like a year. I had a good barb that was geared pretty damn well at the time. With a lot of life steal. good magic find, good resist all, pair of 800 dam weapons, and about 55k health. I could farm Hell through all the acts, and even solo Diablo.

I just finished first run of act five. Like trippled my health, prob doubled my dam. Found like 4-5 legendary items. They are just throwing shit in your face. Stops meaning much if its just thrown at you.

@JRD1912 @g0nz0j03 I understand what you're saying. My point is that getting more frequent and better itemized gear is great for casuals because it keeps them interested and great for the higher skilled players because it enables them to push the difficulty curve and play a more interesting (in my opinion) version of the game.

So yes, while there were a lot of whiners (when isn't there with a Blizzard game, or anything on the internet for that matter) there was good reason to change the loot system, and I feel it's a great improvement.

Yet no console release which was the only version worth mentioning. The pc release was a total mess and the game a big FUCKING scam. The RMAH is the saddest and most desperate thing Ive ever seen added to a video game and so were the cheaters/authenticator bullshit going on. Even as someone who played Hardcore only where no RMAH existed I got my account hacked and all of my stuff taken in the matter of a single night where I woke up the next day with a empty stash/almost naked WD.

I loved the ps3 version which actually felt like what the game shouldve been in the first place,a console release. The new trend of releasing Betas on PC first is just another cancerous wave of stuff going on in this disgraceful industry that I once considered my most favorite hobby. I swear outside of Nintendo/a few competent devs theres no motivation at following the pollution of cash-grabs going on in the video gaming market. Blizzard was once at the top and now theyre amongst the worst scums of the industry with their half-baked SC2 sad excuses of expansion packs and this.

I might get this xpac in a few years once its released for consoles, this industry has truly went to chaos and streamlined interactive movies and FPSes are all you get to play and Nintendo are out of the business cause casual braindeads and cinephiles are all thats left of the market for what we once called ''video games''.

@gameroutlawzz Console will always be inferior to PC. They have to dumb down console controls, graphics, and content which appeals to a wider market. However consoles do serve a use as they get people interested in gaming and they allow casual fun.

@gameroutlawzz console version has less enemies, worse graphics and a terrible menu system. PC version is fine if you can manage not to bitch about the internet connection. By far the worst part of this game now is the infrequent lag spikes.

I wonder what is the benefit for players who are not as highly leveled or have not finished the game? The new Crusaders sound good to start a new campaign but is there any other benefits for casual players?
