Forza Motorsport 6 Review

Sebring it on!

The racing genre has reached that level of maturity where we've lost count of the number of times we’ve driven down the straightaways of Road America and the curves of the Bernese Alps. It speaks to the quality of some racing games that they draw us back to these old roads time and time again. Because it offers substantial new features that bolster the familiar, the arrival of Forza Motorsport 6 is yet another great reason to get back in the driver's seat.

This greatness shines in several areas of Forza 6's design, but nowhere more than Stories of Motorsport, the core mode of Forza 6’s goal-driven single player experience. Neatly organized in sets of five themes, it presents the game’s main racing disciplines in inventive ways that keep you entertained while you get accustomed to different tracks and car class combinations. Forza 6 effectively sells “the journey” of progressing through car classes and eras with appropriate rewards, both practical and superficial, along with a great sense of accomplishment.

You’re surrounded by Drivatars during the first ten seconds of a race. They look less friendly in motion.
You’re surrounded by Drivatars during the first ten seconds of a race. They look less friendly in motion.

Forza 6's Drivatars--A.I. racers that replicate your friends' driving habits--teach you to expect the unexpected. Any given Drivatar can veer off track, just like you might on a bad day. Likewise, a driver in first place can make a dumb move that gives you an undisputed lead for the rest of the race. There's a flipside: a racer could also flawlessly navigate a given track, holding the lead from the first lap all the way to the last, with you in their dust. In situations like this, I couldn’t help but chuckle in resignation when I finished in second place. I was impressed with this latest version of Drivatar for reminding me that there's always going to be unforeseen challenges, and new opportunities to learn from.

One of the reasons why Forza is generally considered a much more accessible racing simulator than say, Gran Turismo, is how it handles penalties. Like the parent who plays the ‘good cop’, Forza 6 doesn’t believe in punishment. Instead, it adds point rewards based on how much you want to challenge yourself, whether it’s turning off assists or increasing the difficulty of the A.I.. Even if you’ve been with the series since its inception but could never get used to turning off assists completely, Forza 6 doesn’t make you feel embarrassed for getting a little help with the controls. It also encourages you to become a smarter and more effective driver through the promise of greater rewards down the road.

The best part of Prague is glancing at a bridge in the distance, knowing that you're going to tear through it a minute later.
The best part of Prague is glancing at a bridge in the distance, knowing that you're going to tear through it a minute later.

This kind of accessibility and motivation pervades Forza's rich suite of multiplayer modes, too. It borrows much of its content from prior Forzas, with standard class-specific races as well as drag race and drifting competitions. Tag (Virus) remains my favorite multiplayer game. The thrill of escaping an infected driver is only matched by the tension of staying still in a hiding spot. While I can only describe my pre-release online play as limited at best, the matches I participated in were free of major performance hiccups. Placing first in your skill level in any multiplayer mode earns bragging rights, though there’s extra prestige in store for excelling in the new Leagues modes. These developer-curated matches operate on a schedule with a Spectator mode in tow. That means increased stakes and pressure from having your matches streamed to large audiences.

Forza 6 also introduces rainfall and night races to the series, and these not only look outstanding, but they offer new canvases for Forza's core gameplay. It is certainly gratifying to gain a level of muscle memory from mastering the grand prix circuit at Brands Hatch, but the addition of rain practically transforms it into a new track, and another rewarding pursuit. The new droplet-saturated cockpit view during a rainy race is even impressive enough that it may win over people who prefer to race with an exterior camera. Of course, these new weather effects introduce difficult driving conditions, such as hydroplaning, but when the view is this nice, you don't mind if your tires have a little less grip--you're just happy to be there. It's worth noting, however, that these conditions are static in their nature. The level of downpour does not vary from race to race, and the puddles in various tracks will be the same size, at the same location, in every outing. Other attractive touches complement Forza 6's realistic flourishes, from the dust specks that get on the camera, to pesky dashboard reflection during sunny races. As with every Forza before it (and Forza Horizon for that matter), you can’t be too hard on yourself for letting a scenic vista or a stunning sunset distract you from the task at hand.

As in real life, rain droplets on your windshield move away from the center based on your car’s speed.
As in real life, rain droplets on your windshield move away from the center based on your car’s speed.

One of Forza 6’s best new features is a modifier system that seems to be inspired by Halo's Skulls, with Mods that offer positive add-ons and reward-driven challenges. Whatever your set-up, Mods add flavor to the routine of gunning for first place. Closing the gap between the leader is tough enough, but activating a Mod that gives you bonus credits with every Perfect Turn is a tempting enough challenge to take you out of your comfort zone. Such multitasking sensations brings unexpected and appreciated depth to Forza 6. Rather than altering the core designs of Forza racing, these Mods complement it. It’s not unlike having another sub-menu of options you can toggle to further personalize your playthrough.

Starting with Forza Motorsport 4, the series' partnership with the Top Gear brand has only enhanced the series’ automotive-fetishization. Things are different this year, however; former Top Gear co-host, Jeremy Clarkson, is no longer associated with Top Gear or Forza. In Clarkson's absence, the familiar James May and Richard Hammond continue to bring their own witty personalities to the introductory sequences of myriad modes and race types. Just don't expect to hear them introduce every one of Forza 6's 460 cars in the virtual car showroom, Forzavista.

Photo-realistic lighting and reflections never get old.
Photo-realistic lighting and reflections never get old.

Forza 6's flaws are few. The pre- and post-race visuals as well as the replays still run at less than 60 frames per second. While maxing out at 30 frames per seconds didn’t hurt the likes of Forza Horizon or Grid 2, going back and forth from the smoothness of a race to the less than fluid scenes at the pit in Forza 6 is off-putting. Then there are the low-resolution liveries, which look great when these designs are tearing up the track at 150 miles per hour, but look less than stellar in the showroom.

As merely the second installment for the Xbox One, Forza Motorsport 6 not only keeps up with the high bar set by Forza 5, it capitalizes on that foundation of quality. The Mod system and the weather effects are reasons enough for Forza 5 enthusiasts to seriously consider this sequel and the abundance of difficulty and assist options makes Forza 6 an immensely accessible driving simulation for newcomers.

The Good

  • Builds off of Forza 5 with the addition of a few welcome features
  • Unpredictable Drivatar behavior keeps races varied and exciting
  • Driving Mods add practical and substantial variety to races
  • Rain and night driving compliment the already great Forza Motorsport experience
  • Comprehensive multiplayer modes offer races for many tastes and skill levels

The Bad

  • Replays still run at less than 60 frames per second

An 8 because replays run less than 60fps? Really?

@lhughey: 8 is "great". Not having that many negatives doesn't mean the game will get 10. Maybe there nothing wrong with it but it's just not that good.

@Arkhalipso: In fact, MGSV has more overall negatives. But it's a better GAME with amazing story, great characters, a lot of satisfaction in events, and the gameplay is very dynamic. The score here isn't an 8 because lowered FPS... The game isn't a 10-negatives lmao.

@lhughey: when are people gonna realize the over enjoyment factor of a game (the score) has nothing to do with the negatives?

This game has nothing wrong with it and deserves a 9 or 10 like any other game but let's remember that GS has their favs for GOTY and they want to space out the 10's so it doesn't look too bad. Let's all remember that GS "collabs" with the opinion of worthless losers from Kinda Funny, who see themselves as an authority and "experts". These hipster d*ck video game pundit wannabes can suck it.

@brostepper: That's what I'm thinking too. They can't give this a 10 because giving too many 10s "look bad"... and we all know it's decided Fallout 4 will get a 10 no matter how many errors/bugs the game will have. Not to talk about the gameplay, it's the same as Fallout 3, but if they say it will be better than Fallout 3, would they ever give it a lower score than Fallout 3? Never in a million years.

@-Vappsen-: Not really? Destiny was overhyped and got a drastic 6... You must be new here then. This game deserves an 8, it's boring as hell.

@brostepper: Just because you feel "nothing wrong with it" doesn't mean it deserves a 9. And just because you think it deserves a 9 or 10 doesn't validate this editor's opinion of it being an 8. There are plenty of games that aren't broken but enjoyment factor can affect a game's score. And enjoyment for every game ranges different from person to person. Stop being so angry over someone's opinion. You'll feel better.

@hippiesanta: Really? Because I see jaggies in games on all consoles. XboxOne, PS4, and the previous generation. Anti-aliasing is expensive on consoles when running at 1080p/60fps. It's a lot easier to do when you're running at 30fps. You get over twice the performance allotments to do things with.

I still have Project CARS to beat so I guess I'm gonna pass on this. Seems more like Forza 5.5 to me, with rain and night being added and some new cars. Not to mention I've always disliked the limited amount of tracks that Forza has had. Campaigns can be a bit long too, only got about half way through 5's before I got bored.

For those FM6 fans in the room, there's a new video posted with the new Logitech G920 wheel for Xbox One. The guys tests it out on FM6 around the Ring (yeah really cool). So if you want to see the wheel in action and want to see how the Ring looks in the game check it out:

This seems like a great exclusive for the xbox one and I am happy for it. Hope you all enjoy it . Sadly , I only have a PS4 so I cannot try this game. Usually I prefer Sony exclusives way more but this sort of sparked my interest. Hopefully, Sony can pick up the pace with racing simulation games.

I think they will now take a little break from Forza. Their goal was to catch the same number of GT games. So, it's now 6/6. Before Forza looked inferior because GT had a higher number next to their name. Now part 7 needs to be really improve and then they will fight to see who and what is the best sim racer this gen.

@razamataz45 think that this game has less cons or the same number of them as MGS5, but this gets an 8 based on nothing really. Basically, the game is great, it's better than the last, nothing wrong with it, but we're gonna give it an 8 and not a 9/10, because we at GS love NERD politics, snort snort, and want MGS6 to be GOTY, a game which will sell under a million copies. lol : The game looks cool but they want to leave the 10/10 for Fallout 4. They don't want ant games with high scores till F4 comes out, because that's already decided on. That game will get a 10 which is already pre0decided, so they want to space out their 9's and 10's.

@Ensabuhnur: The Forza 5 review was a poor review. A good game but it was clearly rushed and F5 lacked content and features. Forza 5 which lacked content and features to make Xbone launch should have never gotten a 9/10 at GS so don't base the Forza 6 review on Forza 5's review.

Forza 5 got a very low 79/100 metascore. GS just overrated F5 and this F6 review shouldn't be based on the terrible GS F5 review.

On the plus side, Forza 6 is sitting right now at a 88/100, it will drop over the next few weeks, but it will definitely best the lowly Forza 5 metascore.

Not that it matters but I believe the reason it got and 8 is "It borrows much of its content from prior Forzas" to get a higher score it needs to bring more new content to the table than rain and night races.

@externalpower43: Nope.

2013's The Last of Us PS3 was a 95 on metacritic and TLOU PS3 got an 8/10 at Gamespot.com.

2014's The Last of Us was remastered for PS4 and included all the DLC and TLOU remastered still got an 8/10 on GS again and the remastered TLOU got a super high 95/100 metascore as well. That's a game that went on to get 200 different Game of the Year awards at various websites and magazines, but was only a 8/10 at GS...

Two different reviewers were involved with The Last of Us (both are fired now).

It's definitely not a PS situation based on The Last of Us's lowballing reviews. Maybe you should look at Metacritic more often instead of relying on one website. The Last of Us was rejected twice by GS judging from the 8/10 scores.

The point is nothing is guaranteed, not Wii U, not PC, not PS4, not Xbone, not 3DS, not Vita...nothing.

----

Forza 6 sits at a 88/100 at metacritic, not anywhere close to a 95/100 that TLOU got and TLOU Remastered also got. If there was a travesty over F6's 8/10 score, it ould be TLOU's 8/10 score as that game won 200+ GOTY awards. Bear in mind, none of us have even played F6 yet....

2013's Forza 5 got a 9/10 at Gamespot.com and that game only got a much lower 79/100 at metacritic (lowest in Forza history) because F5 was a rushed console launch game missing content and features. F5 is a game that was overrated at GS if you are looking for patterns of games getting much higher GS scores than the metascores (not to mention Halo ODST, Halo 4, etc all enjoyed higher scores than their metacritic scores).

Maybe you should look harder at the scores and put the conspiracy ideas down. These are just all people that post opinions of games.

I hope I'm not being rude, but I kind of remember your user name, but I can't recall why or how. I don't even know if we interacted, tbh. You seem familiar with me so I apologize for not recalling how. Unfortunately, a long while back there was either an upset (?) moderator or a strange glitch that deleted a massive portion of my comments from previous articles (and I put a lot more than the typical effort in each of my posts) that I can't even find our encounter if I tried. If you were curious, years ago when it happened and my posts were purged, I did notify admin, but nothing was ever figured out.

Regarding PAX, you are right right. Some of us went to Gamespot's Manager's Conference/Gamestop Expo as well and played Street Fighter 5, indies galore, Forza 6, Halo 5, and other retail games. Definitely should give a shout out to those convention gamers.

Still though, it's nice to get a brief taste of a game early, even surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands of people. That said, it will be nice to get these vidya games home and dissect them as the reviewer was able, lol.

I do appreciate the shout out, if I interpreted your post correctly. :P

It's all coming back now, thank you!

Yeah, unfortunately, Unions were scrapped by the GS redesign, so a lot of great posts and connections were destroyed as well. :(

So 30 FPS outside of actual game play and custom liveries aren't high res? That doesn't sound like an 8 to me. That sounds like a 10, or at least a 9. The review made is sound like it's an example of a great racing simulator.

Eh, whatever...

I don't like the car handle when using a wheel it's just doesn't feel right to me. Most of the cars in the game have speed sensitive steering which makes the cars understeer. Try it in the game pick a corner and go 15 mph turn the wheel 1/2 and in the cockpit view the wheel will only turn 1/4 and that's with the wheel set to 900. I know the wheel animation is only 180 90 degrees left or right but for the first half turn it's one in one. The clutch is a button it's on/off. I know that turn probably feel it not worth it to make the animations match your wheel rotation or have animated paddle shifts or a clutch that's analog because most people that play the game don't have a wheel. I've been play assetto corsa at a friends house with a full wheel and seat setup and I like it so much better. Obviously forza's has the body kits but the number of kits is very low compared to what it used to be. Upgraded parts is nice but in the older forza's titles the car parts played to a strategy etc betters tires for more grip or faster engine. Car part pricing should be closer to the real rice of the parts I mean a aftermarket bumper painted and installed for $100. I'm over the 2 to 3 lap races they should of had a option to select how long you want the races 1/4 of a real race length or full. Over all it is way better than forza 5 and it's ahead of the gt series for now.

So many sony fanboys saying the forza 5 review was flawed, so why cant the Forza 6 review be flawed? It obviously is. When was the last time a racing game had 60 fps replays?

This game must be reallyreally mediocre, for GS to give it only an 8, they always give 10s on Microsoft's games.

Still not bad for retextured last gen racer though, that is exactly the same as the previous one...

Yeah... no. Considering Gamespot only gave like 10 games a 10, EVER, I would say your statement is completely false. lol This year just happened to be a very good year for games. I believe there were 3 10s for 2015. By the way, None of those were Microsoft games.

As sweeping statements go though, that's a pretty good one. :)

lmao I just came here to say this site is the most awful gaming site. they literally have no criteria for game reviews again. I stopped looking at reviews on this site because of how stupid the reviews are. someone on youtube brought this review to my attention. somehow blood borne could get a 9 even with its glitches, but a perfectly executed racing game for xbox one gets 8. boo ! boo ! gamespot worst gaming site ever

@y2kern: No doubt man gamespot is garbage now and has no ideal how to review a damn game. They did the same to Halo MCC.GTA came out and the online was broken yet they gave it like a 9 for the single player.Halo MCC online was broken for a couple of weeks but the single player was amazing and ran perfect yet gamespot game it a 6.Bloodbourne one of the glitch's games ever made and it gets a 9 what a pathetic gaming site this is.Go to ign if you want a real review of Forza 6 they game it a 9 which to be honest it deserves a 10 its damn near perfect

@flames325: Don't worry, gamespot was one of the only places that penalized MCC for the broken online, how that game got an 85 metacritic despite being broken 3 months after launch, I'll never understand.

@y2kern: Well, bloodborne was a better game, and received a higher metacritic score as well, so it's not just gamespot.
