A shift in the tide.

Halo 5: Guardians is fueled by new ideas and propelled by some of the boldest changes to this storied franchise yet. Some of these changes fail, but others succeed, and although Halo 5 falters at times, it whisks us through black holes and across war torn tropical islands at a rapid pace. We can only surrender to its velocity.

With Halo 5, developer 343 Industries comes closer to meeting the many expectations the Halo name carries with it. This is only the developer's second original title, but some facets of the franchise's formula are at their best here. Guardians introduces new player movement, open level design, and an innovative new multiplayer mode, all to great effect. It also implements a new campaign structure, with eight playable characters across two separate teams, as one chases the other across the universe.

Now Playing: Halo 5: Guardians - Video Review

On the one hand, you have Blue Team, comprising the Chief and three of his oldest Spartan comrades. On the other, you have Team Osiris, four soldiers new to the Spartan program, still learning each other's idiosyncrasies. Blue Team's Kelly and Fred speak in short sentences and knowing responses. Osiris is less familiar: Edward Buck's humor often comes during awkward pauses, while Tanaka reveals more about her past than the others asked for.

This learning process aids us well, though, as we're newcomers too. It's fascinating to hear why Vale knows Sangheili, the language of the Covenant Elites. It's intriguing to catch glimpses of Locke's shady past. We're participating in the gameplay, yes, but we are still observers. In granting us these brief glimpses, 343 lends genuine personality to these soldiers.

Halo 5's campaign is best played cooperatively.
Halo 5's campaign is best played cooperatively.

The Spartans' relationships unfold across what amounts to an extended chase sequence: the Master Chief is suspected of war crimes, so Locke and his team are ordered to bring him in. It's a bold thing, turning the face of your franchise into a possible villain. But it sets the stage for what could be an intriguing character study. Sadly, though, it never delivers.

Halo 5 pulls us through this chase as it tries to tell a story about responsibility, the nature of artificial intelligence, and the fall of one's idols. But while there might be a compelling story to tell here, Halo 5 doesn't make use of the opportunities available. Cutscenes fade to black before they feel finished. Character motivations shift on a whim. Halo 5: Guardians spans several beautiful worlds, with chromatic mushroom fields and labyrinthine cave networks, but I seldom knew why I was there.

343 devotes almost 30 seconds to a tangential rant by a ship's AI, but it can't clearly explain where I'm going. The ending is also weak, and although it's the second installment in a trilogy, it still ended during what seemed like the story's climax. Despite the frenetic pace of its gameplay, the campaign loses impact when there's not much story to contextualize missions

Guardians brings us to the Elite homeworld for the first time.
Guardians brings us to the Elite homeworld for the first time.

There are also combat-free environments in Halo 5's campaign, in which you explore small, self-contained areas before embarking on the next mission. You can speak with Dr. Catherine Halsey, the founder of the UNSC Spartan program. You chat with friendly alien grunts as they sing, banter, and argue in their boredom. There are also audio logs scattered throughout the campaign, containing overheard whispers and fleeting conversations that, at their best, help flesh out Halo 5's backstory.

But these sections don't fit. They're added weight to an already disjointed plot. The exploration-based areas and diary entries only serve to slow down the otherwise steady sprint through Halo 5's worlds, and I moved past them in an effort to keep the experience moving.

But in the end, my frustration with the campaign's narrative was offset by how good the gameplay feels. 343 has added several abilities to the usual Spartan skillset, granting new options to the already tight controls. You can ground pound unsuspecting enemies from above. You can dash to one side to avoid that rocket barrelling past your team. The Smart Link--a neural interface that grants a zoom ability with every weapon--lets you hover mid-air as you line up a shot. Now more than ever, I actually feel like a super soldier.

That 343 has introduced these drastic changes to the formula, while still maintaining that responsive Halo feel, is admirable. As a Halo veteran, this feels like I remember, but also adds another layer of nuance to my muscle memory. Halo 5 introduces a new kinetic vocabulary that's not essential to survival, but it certainly helps.

Now more than ever, I actually feel like a super soldier.

You can also finish sprints with a brutal melee smash. While this is useful for depleting Elites' shields, or sending grunts careening across the map, it also opens up side routes through Halo 5's open-ended mission layouts. Gone are the linear pathways of the series' past: these new environments function more as arenas, with varying elevations and avenues of approach. There are also hidden weapon stashes and vehicle depots. If you don't mind the erratic narrative, these missions are worth replaying, just to see them unfold differently a second time.

Halo 5 is best played cooperatively, though, with three friends. The ability to split into two teams, cover each other from different angles, and utilize every weapon possible leads to a wide array of emergent gameplay situations. One of my favorite missions places two players in Forerunner phaeton ships while the other two progress on the ground. The foot soldiers concentrated on enemy ground troops, while the pilots destroyed imposing laser turrets. The juxtaposition of aerial and foot combat, and the interplay between them, is Halo 5 at its best.

Four-player co-op also erases the weight of the ally AI, which fills any spots devoid of a human player. To be fair, the AI performs well at times: after pointing out a priority enemy target, my artificial teammates are quick to focus their fire. But other times, the AI is abysmal. Halo 5 grants you a second chance before forcing a respawn, allowing your teammates to revive your dying character. And this works well in co-op, when two players can provide cover fire as the third rushes to the rescue. But without a human touch, this situation devolves into a train of suicide missions as the AI rushes into certain death, one by one.

Halo 5's cast has just as many female Spartans as it does male.
Halo 5's cast has just as many female Spartans as it does male.

Yet despite the inconsistent AI, and despite its incomprehensible plot, this is a fast-paced campaign with smart level design and fluid gameplay. At its best, the shooter rewards teamwork between four friends, encourages clever use of its new movement system, and unfolds across a variety of gorgeous worlds. By the end, however, it drags us through a convoluted plot with poor storytelling.

But then there's the multiplayer. And here, Halo 5 excels. In fact, this is the best shape Halo's multiplayer has ever taken.

The classic Halo playlists, such as Slayer, Capture the Flag, and the fan-favorite SWAT, eschew the modern multiplayer progression system introduced with Halo 4. Now, instead of earning new weapon options a la Call of Duty, Halo 5 returns to form with universal weapon loadouts, and by scattering power weapons throughout each map, delivers a welcome departure from the tedious unlock system of its predecessor.

You won't develop the necessary competitive reflexes over the course of a single match. Arena will make sense right away, but multiplayer skill comes with practice. When practice feels this fluid, though, and movement this dynamic, acquiring those skills isn't a chore.

This is the best shape Halo multiplayer has ever taken.

While Arena feels great in a tactile sense, and captures the essence of what makes Halo multiplayer compelling, Halo 5's new Warzone departs from franchise tradition several times over. It takes inspiration from the MOBA genre, combining player vs. player tactics with player vs. environment combat. And it's one of the best new ideas in not just this series, but the shooter genre in general.

Warzone spans huge maps, in lush jungles and barren arctic landscapes. Each team has a plethora of options laid out before it, from capturing neutral zones, to killing enemy players, to defeating AI combatants. Several times throughout each match, AI mini-bosses will spawn. These opponents pilot Banshee fighter ships and drive Wraith tanks, and present a greater challenge than the normal AI fodder. These are the objectives in Warzone, and this is a mode that forces teams to make decisions.

Matches are won by accruing 1000 points. Each kill, each zone capture, and each slain mini-boss contributes to that total. Teams must choose where to strike, and when to do so. Warzone is brilliant because, as with the rest of Halo 5, there is momentum here--but this is a force that shifts from side to side with each match. Warzone isn't so much about consistency--it's about adaptability. And the team that can roll with the punches, and punch back at the right moments, will have the upper hand.

After ranking up, and achieving certain accolades throughout Halo 5's multiplayer modes, you'll earn requisition points. These act as currency for three tiers of item packs, each containing random weapon unlocks, vehicle orders, and aesthetic items. And they succeed in changing the way you play based on the equipment available. By gaining energy throughout each match, you burn through cards, thereby granting weapons and vehicles to aid in the battle. These can turn the tide of skirmishes, allowing you to defeat certain bosses when others can't.

Warzone matches can change at a moment's notice.
Warzone matches can change at a moment's notice.

By ordering a Wraith tank, my team stemmed the flow of enemy soldiers to the nearest capture zone. At 950 points, victory was within reach. We established a frontline, held our position, and within five minutes, gained enough points to win the match. Requisitions were helpful, and could provide a rewarding reason to return to Halo 5's multiplayer after the first few weeks--but it's the careful blend of overarching strategy and moment-to-moment tactics that push Warzone forward.

In some ways, Halo 5 is the boldest Halo yet. The franchise's multiplayer is at its peak, with a mode I'm sure I'll return to several times over. But then there's the campaign, which introduces fluid new movement and open level design, yet can't tell a coherent story to match. There are signs of a phenomenal shooter here, but certain narrative aspects feel underdeveloped, holding the franchise's newest sequel back from true excellence.

Like Spartan Locke and his team, 343 is chasing after something bigger than itself, and with Halo 5: Guardians, it comes close. Now if only it could reach out its arm and take hold.

Rented this from Gamefly and I am seriously considering keeping it. The campaign is much more open ended and deep. Love the new weapons and vehicles. Multiplayer is excellent also. I personally couldn't care less about the story in games. Gameplay is far more important. Only downside is no matchmaking for co-op story. 9/10 for me.

You can also count me out...I really like split screen and firefight and none of these exist. I hope Microsoft learns that next generation systems and games should include more, not less...a very poor strategy, sort of the same stupid mistake that pounded on the Xbox One's launch!

I'm one of those abominations that only play the campaign in Halo series :)

I only can say that since the departure of Bungie, the story and campaign really took a dive there. Well it's my opinion only ofc.

On a side note, I usually play the game with my family in a living room. Now without split screen, it's kinda weird to play this game together during family time since if we do that, some of us has to play the game from their bedroom.

Just finished the Halo 5 campaign and really enjoyed it. While lacking as gripping a story as past Halos, the combat had a lot more depth and variety in my opinion. Battlefield areas seems better laid out and enjoyed the team aspect.

All the hate in the comment section is very surprising. Halo 5 by far is the BEST halo game in the franchise and definitely the most ambitious.

Campaign

I personally loved the story. Definitely one of the best stories in a while. This is just my opinion though. I seriously don't think its fair to just straight out say the campaign sucks and rate the overall game low because of this, remember its all opinionated, unless you can PROVE to me the campaign ACTUALLY sucked then I won't take your opinion then anymore then simply an opinion. And like I said before, in MY PERSONAL OPINION the Campaign was the BEST. But i'm not stating it as fact so I don't have to PROVE ANYTHING TO ANYBODY :)And playing as a black guy FINALLY[Black ops 3 offers absolutely no characters of color] was definitely refreshing :)

Splitscreen

I also see that alot of people are pissed over the fact they can't use split-screen, well yeah sorry to break it to you, but the Xbox One is a weak console and too many people were crying over 60 fps and 1080P so 343I built the game from the GROUND UP[NO they can not simply patch it back in] without SC in mind. Come to find out alot of people cared about this, but now its simply to late. Rather or not this is a problem is ONCE AGAIN nothing more then an opinion. For me its not a problem. Because all my real life friends play with me over Xboxlive and we all have our own consoles, internet, gold memberships and we all live in Middle Class families. So i'm curious as to why everyone else can't just do what i'm doing lol, unless you have a wife or a family full of gamers[this description doesn't fit me], I really can't understand why this is such a problem to you. But if that description DOES fit you, then yes I can fell your pain and you have every right to complain about this. And since i'm a competitive gamer who loves good performance and graphics, has friends who play with me over Xboxlive, I don't care for split screen. Its as simple as that.

Microtransactions: Reqs

Ok now when you first read the title, you automatically start to bitch unless you ACTUALLY understand it and the catch that comes with it. In Halo 5 Guardians, the Microtransactions: A. Only affect Warzones in terms of actual gameplay, everything outside of Warzones is just cosmetics. B. Are entirely optional and don't really play any importance at all, me or none of my friends invested a single cent into the game and still kick everyone's asses, including the ones who do invest money into the game. C. Requires a certain rank depending on you are buying, in other words you have to actually play the game for REQS to even work. D. Does not grant you the skill to use whatever items you purchasing. In other words just because you buy lets say a BR for example, that doesn't mean you are going to know how to effectively use that BR. The individual is still going to have to earn the skill and like I said before the RANK to use that item effectively or at all in the latter's case. E. Keep in mind Warzones is aimed towards casuals/the newer generation of Halo. Veterans and Skilled players should play Arena and await Big Team Battle and the other game modes outside of Warzones. And remember outside of Warzones, microtransactions are only cosmetics nothing more. Or maybe you are like me and you are a veteran and skilled player but can still kick ass in WZ without investing any money? LAST BUT NOT LEAST, keep in mind all money from REQS/the microtransactions are going straight to the Halo World Championship, and of course 343I's pockets since they are giving us FREE DLC and are already working on Halo 6. Halo 5 will also be constantly fresh throughout its life cycle and will last a very long time.

Multiplayer

There is nothing to be said about MP in H5 Guardians except one word: Perfection.

If you dislike Halo 5 multiplayer then you are not a skilled player. If you are a veteran I could understand it since Arena is very challenging and definitely the hardest MP experience in a Halo game to date. So you are probably use to a more easy approach. But if you are like me and you have skill then you will have fun :)

Bottom line, whoever or whatever you are, BUY HALO 5!! IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT. ME AND MY FRIENDS RATE IT 5/5. 10/10. PURE PERFECTION.

Ignore AngryJoe he is a fool. Just like every other Halo 5 hater out there. Buy Halo 5 :)

Would you guys at Gamespot mind a whole lot if you just stopped giving you same damn answer with every freaking game? We get it okay, we seriously, freaking, get it. NO GAME in the universe has an interesting and sensible plot in your guys' opinion. Congratulations, you've made that perfectly clear.

But might I suggest you guys actually use your freaking brains for once? Or maybe someone that actually fucking plays the game? I'm sorry, but I've played this, and the campaign is like a gazillion times better than the multiplayer at all, and saying how balanced it is? Is a freaking joke! A serious, humangous joke. Players manage to flank you ever second, even on the end of your own warzone or arena map, some guys have super gear that they bought in those stupid packs, or just stronger shields , or other nonsense. I have a party of friends now, that all played it, and all of them got annoyed by how unfair every single mode is, how easily you just get flanked, killed by your own team mates. there is NO freaking balance. So seriously, thanks for pointing out again how seriously without thinking you guys do some of these reviews, because again bitching about the plot, while obviously no one over there een takes the time to try and follow it, while you seriously think this game is balanced in multiplayer? Well, yeah, congrats on that. At first I seriously thought I could do at least something in this multiplayer, but you just can't, there is no fun, and there definitely is no balance.

@XHawk222: The campaign is short , the plot is rather dumb and flasely advertised, with an unwaranted, sequelbait ending. M'not sure I see your point. By all means, halo 5 underperforms. I can't vouch for MP. I only played the SP.

343 has turned Halo 5 campaign into a complete COD clone for campaign structure and progression, but that's not the worst part! What's worse is they also allow resurrecting by AI players anytime making the game meaningless to play, removing all challenge, completely stripping ALL reason to fight well and not die in solo campaigns. Then they put story Data Pads/Access Points in the game BUT you are nagged to death for simply exploring the levels to discover them as your AI team mates constantly whine about "Come On, Let's Get Going, We Need to GO HERE!"...SHUT UP already and let me enjoy the darn game! Then the constant onscreen prompts to Hit UP on D-Pad for next objective/waypoint, it's pure COD "ring in your nose, leash around your neck" yanking you through the game like we are all mindless fools. I think what really helped me see just how BAD Halo 5's solo campaign is is that I just played the Master Chief Collection from start to finish (campaigns) thinking that would be a great way to approach Halo 5's campaign. Well all I can say is Halo 5's solo campaign is such a boring, obnoxious mess created by 343's commitment to including 4 player co-op as unique characters, it's just depressing, $60 gone for yet another dumbed down pretty game. GONE is any challenge, joy of exploration and meaningful reason to properly manage weapons and ammo, to get better, try different things and do well...it just does not matter any more in Halo 5.

@mrbobbster: They did try different things, plenty of it, and enough worked out for it. And the campaign is actually seriously one of the few things I really liked about this game. Also, because I'm still one that doesn't like overkill hard games, and even now, you can still play it good, or you could like, you know, play it on Legendary if you're really going to cry about the difficulty, sigh... How does that make a game or break it? Seriously man.

And if you really want a challenge, go play the SO well balanced multiplayer, where you just get flanked every five seconds in warzone, and where some no-lifers daddy's spend a million on giving them all the best shit to use in warzone. Yeah, it's TOTALLY the campaign that you should whine about man, totally. I hope you notice the sarcasm in my writing, because I'm sick and tired of games being made annoyingly difficult because of whining like this, while good stuff in games get busted down, but the multiplayer? Oh yes! Always the multiplayer, doesn't matter how bad it sucks, how unbalanced it truly is, just say the exact opposite, because hey, it's multiplayer, right?

Personally I don't care for multiplayer on consoles at least. On handhelds and PC's where I am up close to the screen and have a headset and mic then sure, but console online multiplayer does nothing for me. The most disappointing thing about Halo to me is that it never really evolved in to what I expected it to. Halo 1 seemed to promise a new era of free roam FPS (I remember being in awe of the first Island section and how free you were compared to the corridor shooters of the day) but Halo just became another Sci Fi shooter that is very linear and with the same 5 enemy types more or less. Halo 4 was long, enjoyable and visually impressive for 360, but really by now it should be open world with some sandbox elements, and use physics based gameplay/puzzles like HL2 rather than mind numbing constant shooting. Even the "Plant bomb" mechanics in Halo 4 were just basic "press X" affairs. It should be more than what it is, just like COD. But consumers keep buying the same old thang...

Just finished this game, and I am truly bummed out by it. I hate to say it, but right from the start I had a bad feeling about this game... Halo 4 (done by the same company) seemed much better with a slightly more coherent and more involving story. The news for this game said we were going to have an emotional and personal story, which I saw none of. The game just starts and throws you into.... something. I really had no idea what was going on with the story / plot right from the get go. Story telling for this game was just weak, weak, weak. I was really confused what was going on with Cortana, and why she was doing what she was doing. Halo has never had the most coherent story, but I usually had a vague idea of what was going on. In Halo 5, I really didn't know what the hell was going on story wise. I just knew I was suppose to shoot all the bad guys. Okay, enough said. Also... I don't know if I've been spoiled from Destiny or what... but playing this game actually just highlights HOW GOOD the gameplay in Destiny is. The handling in this game felt really basic, simple, floaty. Was Halo always like this? I use to absolutely love the feel of Halo 3, and ODST, and Reach. This game looks really fantastic, as it should, but I really didn't enjoy playing it. As a huge halo fan, this game was a huge huge let down. Destiny feels more like Halo, than Halo does. I guess that shouldn't be a huge surprise considering Desitny is made by bungie... but I actually really enjoyed Halo 4, so I'm just surprised at how much I didn't enjoy this game. It's sad to see what has happened tot his franchise.

I bet that We have to read between the lines (?) from Mike (MaHardly) being honest there - So, the 8 out of 10 and the "great" mention from gamespot should go to Microsoft; Studio 343 and (Spencer chief) Phil for having ruined our beloved franchise. In short and a piece of advice from a huge Halo fan - just rent the game, don't buy it yet and wait it goes cheaper , that is the best way to go so far.

5½ hour single Campaign, nothing that I expected in story were in the game. As I reached the end I thought I were halfway and then the credits popped. Suppose they focused all on MP. Reach is still the best one. Usually Halo has been all about story and mp wise had atleast coop vs Waves of enemies, didnt see any of that in this game. Well Ive already bought a console to play this game so could just aswell spend hours on warzone farm.

@RabbiSchmuley: But war is like COD, it never changes... in any meaningful ways at least. So is War like a shooter? shooters are like War... This could go on for a while.

started it on veteran, after a few levels switched to legendary, ..restarting it on legendary..

as many Halos since H3, its also best on the legendary and goes epic!! (while on veteran it was ok-ish)

on Legendary, you have real shoot outs/duells with angles and stronger enemies, you use the NPC commando often and regroup them (strategicly) much more, you search for better vantage points and weapons while sniping much more, "cat & mouse" fights develop often, the tenion nearing a checkpoint increases a lot on lengendary etc. .etc. etc..

=> on legendary his this possibly the best Halo so far... and any Halo Veteran, should know, that since H3, Halo's real gameplay have either been on Veteran (H3 & HR) or Legendary (HODST & H4)..., on Legendary, H5's solo campaign is a good 9.0-9.5/10.... (if not even higher)

LOVE Warzone. Love it. It's like a Destiny Strike on steroids with no revives. I like the concept of the REQ system. I like the gameplay of the campaign and the organic 4 player coop.

Here's what I don't like: the multiplayer controls are a little wonky-feeling. The animations of enemies/enemy players gets jerky and weird when they're more than 10 feet away. The Warzone graphics get pixelated. Forgivable. The story isn't bad, it's horrible.

Any gaming website that rates Halo 5 with a score of 8 can't be trusted. Halo 5 is worth 6.5 at best. Halo 5 should have had originality, but it has none; it should have had creativity, but it has none; and so forth. The campaign is really poor in everything except action. Warzone is what matters, but it does not have much content. A score of 6.5 is very generous.

Think this dude is a bit of a fanboy and it isn't for Xbox. Game is stellar. If the story troubles you, it may be because it ties into aspects of the Forerunner saga books.

@cainetao11: Mahardy is actually a huge Halo fan who has read all the novels and is really into the lore, as stated in The Lobby.

@Hondje89: I am aware. I watch the lobby. It was fun seeing the responses though.

@cainetao11: If you think the game is above an 8 you are likely a casual gaming sheep. Baaaaaah

@stevo302: When did I say anything about the score? I read reviews. And say things that you bite on hook line and sinker evidently

@cainetao11: I disagree. The story is pretty bad. Just because someone doesn't give something a 10/10 doesn't mean they're a fanboy of the competition. That's ridiculous fanboy thinking.

@ck02623: Never mentioned score. I disagree. Story is pretty good with interesting take on Forerunner AIs.
