Ryse: Son of Rome Review

  • First Released Nov 22, 2013
    released
  • XONE

You are not entertained.

Ryse: Son of Rome is huge in scale, but small in scope. For all the stunning spectacle it throws at you--the sight of a hundred-strong army laying bloody waste to a barbarian horde, the march of a legion as hulking great fireballs rain down from the sky--your part in it all is that of an outlier, a lone wolf single-handedly trying to save a crumbling empire. What you're left with, then, are the scraps: small melee battles against a procession of mindless opponents who you slaughter in painfully shallow third-person combat.

What initially seems like an impressive system based on precision and timing, largely thanks to some nice visual cues and elegant slow-motion animations, quickly becomes an exercise in mind-numbing tedium--and with just a sword and a shield attack on offer, it's hardly surprising. Sure, there are blocks, dodges, and counters to help things along, but when you're faced with opponents whose repetitive moves you'll have seen in their entirety after the first hour of the game, it's not long before you've experienced everything the combat system has to offer and figured out a sequence to repeat ad nauseam.

Now Playing: Ryse: Son of Rome - Video Review

Even the gruesome stabs and bloody dismemberments of hero Marius' quick-time finishing moves do little to ease the banality of it all. Blood is spilled with such ferocious regularity in Ryse that what was once shocking and impressive is soon reduced to just another repetitive sight to endure. Killing enemies is less and less satisfying every time you lop off another limb, and for a game that's all about the combat, that's a really big problem. It's not as if you can avoid the bloody finishing moves either, with bonuses such as health regeneration and experience boosts tied to the attacks.

And so battles quickly blur into one another as you're endlessly marched from one small group of opponents to another, spilling litres of barbarian blood along the way. The odd turret defense mission and sections where you march a small legion towards a tower--raising shields to avoid a flurry of fiery arrows along the way--do their best to mix things up, but these moments are short-lived and so painfully easy that you feel like you might as well not be in control of the game at all. Even the moments when it seems like the game is drawing you into the larger fight offer only the illusion of control. You can bark orders at the Kinect to unleash a flurry of arrows, or choose where you want to station your archers while you fight, but all you have to do is play such battles a few times to discover that your choices have little bearing on the battle at large.

Ryse is all sizzle and no steak, a stunning visage paired with a vapid personality.

It's a good thing that stream is there, because Marius will need a bath after this battle.
It's a good thing that stream is there, because Marius will need a bath after this battle.

That you're funneled into these battles along tightly controlled paths without any sense of exploration hammers home the fact that Ryse is a graphical show pony for the Xbox One, rather than a fully fleshed-out experience. Incredibly detailed cities and huge, beautiful vistas with impressive draw distances lure you into thinking that this is a living, breathing world, but as soon as you try to venture off the beaten path to explore it, you're sent crashing back to reality. Sure, many games put up invisible walls in an effort to keep the narrative and action flowing, but Son of Rome does little to disguise its limitations. You can climb up a huge towering wall one moment, only to have the savior of the Roman Empire stopped dead in his tracks seconds later by a small plank of wood. It's simply maddening.

With brain-dead combat playing such a large role in Ryse, it falls to the story to keep you ploughing through the battles. The trouble is that the hackneyed tale of murder and revenge is so full of cliches and iffy dialogue that it's hard to take it seriously. That I actually laughed out loud when Marius was asked to "put on this hat" to take his place as a centurion speaks volumes about the script here. Things pick up a little later in the game, particularly when you meet the wonderfully acted and thoroughly despicable sons of Emperor Nero, but for the most part, the story--like the combat--serves to showcase impressive visual touches such as the eerily good facial animation, rather than flesh out the game.

The online arena co-op mode mirrors the campaign's problems. The impressive-looking Colosseum is filled with spikes and obstacles, and it's there that you perform mindless missions like knocking over a cauldron to burn a catapult, or--in a wonder of originality--knocking over a cauldron to burn a pit of barbarians. It doesn't help that you're stuck using the same monotonous combat system as in the single-player game to fight off the waves of barbarians hurled at you, the only tweak being that you must choose a single bonus power such as health regeneration or strength boosts, rather than have access to them all. It's a mode you'll play once, and then never touch again.

Ryse 2 will be a buddy comedy.
Ryse 2 will be a buddy comedy.

Ryse is all sizzle and no steak, a stunning visage paired with a vapid personality. Everything from the leveling system that's so painfully easy to complete (and so devoid of any impact on the game that it might as well not be there), to the story that does little to flesh out its lead characters beyond puerile notions of revenge is a testament to how little Ryse can back up its gorgeous visuals with anything more than a shallow set of fisticuffs.

The Good

  • Wonderful visuals
  • Some fantastic vocal performances

The Bad

  • Combat is shallow and repetitive
  • Lays the gore on so thick that a severed limb quickly becomes yawn-worthy
  • Often laughable script
  • Bland multiplayer modes
  • Tightly controlled paths stop you from exploring the beautiful scenery

About the Author

Mark loves a good action game, having reviewed the likes of DmC: Devil May Cry and God of War: Ascension. He somehow willed himself to play Ryse through to completion, and spent an evening hammering through some multiplayer on Xbox Live.

"Combat is shallow and repetitive" "Often laughable script" " Tightly controlled paths stop you from exploring the beautiful scenery". Oh man, it's sounds like a COD game all the way! Could someone explain why COD gets an 8 instead of 4 despite the same flaws? Would be nice if review sites had some consistency.

@slowion I'll I agree totally with you it's worth a 3. The graphics for the backgrounds are gorgeous and detailed whereas the people have a kinda cartoony look to them. The facial expressions make me laugh because everyone looks stoned out of their skulls and the movement in battling is jerky and not very fluid. The killing is realistic but gets boring very quickly. I'm glad I have a platinum edge card because if you don't like the game within 3 days you can take it back for a full refund of store credit at EB Games.

In all honesty, I just cant take Gamespot seriously anymore. The worst reviews I have read this year have basically all come from Gamespot. I could understand giving this game a 6, even tho I personally consider it a 7.5, but to give it a 4, lol. This is as bad as the Ducktales review. I expected a bad review, but this is nothing short of comical.

If Gamespot gives a bad review to Knack, they are biased against PS4.

If Gamespot gives a bad review to Ryse, they are biased against Xbox One.

Conclusion: buy the new Zelda game on the 3DS.

@advocacy Yeah, people saying they can't take Gamespot seriously because of harsh reviews is even more laughable than this game's script. I can't take those people seriously when they're so obsessed with scores. When I play a game I don't think "Is this a 7 or 8?" and when I talk about games with others I never rate them, but instead I say what I liked and disliked. Even if people all thought the same, saying a game is 5/10 or 9/10 is such a shallow way to describe it.

IGN and EGM rated it higher. If they didn't, I'd have been really disappointed. As it is, I'll still be giving this one a look.

Ok.... I just finished Ryse. I haven't the slightest idea of where that review score came from. Anybody that likes action brawlers, like God of War, will like this game. Not only is it gorgeous and controls flawlessly, it's also very fun. Not only do you upgrade your character, but you also upgrade the executions your guy performs.

While the review says that this is a linear game (that they take off points for), it is not without exploration. There are numerous collectibles to find through-out the world. There are plenty of opportunities to venture off the beaten path. Not every game needs to be an open-world game. How can you detract points because it's not open-world? Is God of War open world?

I started out playing Assassins Creed 4 and popped in Ryse as a change of pace. I played Ryse straight until I beat it. Because I am a person that looks for the collectibles (around 70 total in the game), I don't just run through the main story as quick as possible.

If played on the easier of the 4 difficulty levels, there's not much challenge with the rank-&-file bad guys. But if you play on the tougher 2 levels, it can be extremely tough. At the most, you'll have 6 guys surrounding you at one time. Trust me, you do not want anymore than that.

The game also switches things up by having you man a mounted cross bow, using archers to cover you, and puts you in phalanx formation with other soldiers.

Obviously this site is littered with whiny PS fanboys, but for the X1 gamers... don't be afraid to pick this up based on this bullshit review. I almost was and I'm so glad I didn't.

Now that I've finished Ryse I'm even more convinced that a hint of bias is involved in this review. If reviews weren't so subjective the 4.0 score would be criminal. I found Ryse to be fantastic. Gorgeous graphics, engaging cinematic story, great voice acting, a fun co-op multiplayer, and gameplay that may be repetitive but that works very well within the flow of things. I love Ryse & while I can see someone not being completely in love with the gameplay, I can't see any justification for a 4.0!

@keith7198 Really? You just said it yourself, reviews are subjective and that is the whole point of them. Reviews are only good if they are subjective interpretations of the game and nothing else.

I can't see any justification for anyone complaining over the score in someone elses review.

If you want to give the game an 5/10 instead of a 4/10 you are free to do so, but we already have that exact number in Metascore. There really isn't any point in doing a review and give the game a score based on what the average person would think about the game.

"Reviews are only good if they are subjective interpretations of the game and nothing else."

Exactly, which is why this review is dog shit. It was given a crap score because he doesn't like the XB1. It should have been a review of the game and nothing else; whether he likes the platform it is played on (or not) shouldn't have been a factor.

What is the reviewer thinking? Is he insane? Ryse is gorgeous, and I am having too much fun playing it. I think the reviewer doesn't like hack and slash games. This game deserves at least a fair review of 7 or above. Bashing the game will not earn respects for many gamers that are enjoying the quality of graphics and vivid colors.

@Clavera I correct myself, my bad you are right the reviewer is not insane, but dumb as in dumb and dumber. Totally moron like the morons that like to bash Hack N Slash games and then give a higher ratings at first person shooter games. This person entirely gave that game a bad rating just because he or she or it doesn't like playing these kind of games. The good about this game as he mentions are the graphics along with the colors. The bad, there is nothing bad about this game. Oh and yes it is repetitive sword slashing etc... but so is shooting with a gun.. I WON!!

@atown16667 @Clavera @Bionicle5000 Metacritic users gave the game a 5/10, not much different from 4/10. I just don't see what the fuss is about anymore, if people want to see the average rating they just have to go to Metacritic instead.

@Clavera @Bionicle5000 however it is unjust if that the staff rating comes from a biased perspective due to the fact that many people when deciding to purchase games go to these websites to help persuade their commitment to purchase. To quote a line from peter parker's uncle: with great power comes great responsibility.

'Amazingly enough', they're not, only 9 out of the 39 other critics on metacritic are on the 'same page' as Mark. So not 'every other reviewer'.

29 out of 40 critics gave the game 6 out of 10 or higher. Walton's review being the second lowest score.

I don't know why trolls are rejoicing about this. If he can't produce a review of a game on the console we all know he hates in a professional manner, then how can any of you trust his opinion of games played on other platforms?.

It may not be the greatest game out there, but believe it or not, it can be quite fun. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Multiplayer ain't half bad either. It'd just good mindless fun. Should have got a 6 atleast.

Sometimes you just have to try things out for yourself and stop listening to others. Make up your own mind after playing it.

I think it's time to bring on Mass Effect 4. I can't wait for this game.
