Sniper Elite III Review

  • First Released Jun 27, 2014
    released
  • PS4

Shoot to kill.

Whenever I wasn't setting up a shot, emptying my lungs, and pumping a sharp metal bullet through the thick skull of an unsuspecting enemy soldier, I was frustrated with Sniper Elite III. Not because the surrounding mechanics are broken or the levels are poorly structured, as the subsidiary elements of this third-person shooter are, for the most part, serviceable. However, every action building up to you actually pulling the trigger of a rifle feels more like a chore than an interesting setup for the perfect shot. There's an undeniable satisfaction that stems from the glorious slow-motion kills that abound in Sniper Elite III, but missions tend to promote stealthy, silent takedowns rather than the grotesque headshots it does so well.

Fortunately, what the game does best is on full display early on. The level design in Sniper Elite III is more open than previous games in the series, often encouraging shots being fired from more than 300 meters away. Instead of funneling you down a straight path, each of the eight locations in the campaign presents you with a sniping sandbox where creativity leads to better shooting and stronger positioning. Bullishly rushing headfirst into enemy territory is always an option, but the grizzled protagonist crumples to the dirt after just a pair of well-placed shots. Silent steps often lead to better vantage points, and with so many routes to choose from in any given level, the method by which the objective is completed is up to you.

Now Playing: Sniper Elite III - Video Review

That doesn't make this an open-world game, though. There are various side objectives like shutting down search lights or sabotaging the enemy's explosives supply, but there's still a clear path to completion within every mission. An ever-present objective marker reminds you that just 200 meters away lies a folder of intel that could greatly benefit the Allied forces, and all you need to do to collect it is pick off whatever patrolling soldiers stand in the way.

You're not required to kill everything with a heartbeat in order to progress, but the innate satisfaction that comes with long-range marksmanship is almost too great to pass up. After perching atop a sniper nest and locating a viable target, you have the option of steadying your breath and adding an additional red reticle that illustrates exactly where your bullet will drop. Once you fire off that perfect shot, the camera ignores the man behind the rifle and instead follows the round as it leisurely approaches its mark. It's a remarkable scene that all but erases auxiliary threats, letting you enjoy the slow-motion mayhem. The crack of your barrel will likely alert anything with a heartbeat nearby, but in that very moment, all that matters is the journey of a single bullet.

Be vewwy vewwy quiet.
Be vewwy vewwy quiet.

The finale of the shot is pure, primal bliss. A quick X-ray view of a perfect kill shot often shows the lead splintering both ends of the skull, forcing bits of brain to escape from the newly opened flesh caverns. Eyes pop, lungs burst, and yes, testicles rupture as you pump round after round into the opposition. It's the feature attraction of the series, and it's better than ever. You kill hundreds of unsuspecting enemies in this manner, watching as formerly distinctive faces are violently torn beyond recognition. Turning off the drawn-out animations is an option, but this boorish display of bloody precision is a guilty pleasure.

Regrettably, you're more often faced with tedious stealth sections than the extended sniping segments that make the game so captivating. Levels are littered with soldiers who perk up as soon as you fire off a noisy round, and since you're about as flimsy as any single enemy on screen, clearing the map with a silenced pistol or a quick flip of the knife is often the most intelligent route to success. That's not to say that Sniper Elite III is overly challenging, however. If you take the time to spot and tag enemies before firing, you ensure that you have time to relocate to another vantage point immediately after taking your shot. The game rewards you for relocating successfully, though it's too easy to simply backpedal to an area that you've already cleared and then wait for enemies to cool off. If you prefer to stay put, puttering generators and the timely hum of planes flying overhead can mask the crash of your rifle, but these contrived elements aren't enough to fix the core problem that stifles the fun. Sniper Elite III shines when you're looking through the scope, but there are just too many situations throughout the campaign that encourage close-range monotony over the wildly entertaining sniping.

Alas, poor Yorick!
Alas, poor Yorick!

Slowly creeping from cover to cover to keep your heart rate down isn't exactly a thrill, but the locales you'll explore are at least more colorful and distinctive than what we've seen from the first two entries. The drab browns and grays have been replaced by the lush African theater, where beautiful lighting shines through bright green foliage and the jagged edges of sprawling mountains. It doesn't have the graphical pop that you expect from a current game, but Sniper Elite III still impresses with multihued vistas that appear to stretch for miles.

A handful of difficulty settings extends the life of an otherwise stunted campaign, which features one of the most forgettable World War II narratives in recent memory. The deadly serious dialogue and macho posturing aren't the right matches for the often laughably over-the-top death animations, but the story sequences are sparse enough to ignore. The best commentary will often come from a second player, as the cheers and jeers resulting from a brutal assassination are more interesting than anything an in-game character has to say. It's easy to bring a friend into any of the campaign missions for some backup, and while it can be cumbersome to coordinate shots without alerting the guards, adding a second sniper to the mix creates a whole new set of tactics to consider.

Regrettably, you're more often faced with tedious stealth sections than the extended sniping segments that make the game so captivating.

The co-op offerings extend to an asymmetrical mode called Overwatch, which acts as a wave-based alternative to the campaign. The bulk of the action revolves around spotting and downing as many enemies as possible before either supplies or health are depleted, and since shooting guys in the head is the draw of Sniper Elite III, this additional mode is worth a look. However, completing objectives and coordinating kills with a friend in the campaign is a much more interesting challenge than simply popping off as many rounds as your rifle will allow.

Competitive multiplayer is light on surprise and heavy on disheartening deaths. One of the most frustrating ways to die in any online shooter is a surprise sniper bullet to the head, since it's often a sudden end that makes you feel powerless. Those, by and large, are the only deaths you'll encounter here, and you can expect them early and often. Unique modes like Distance King and No Cross are a welcome change from your basic Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, as both encourage long-distance shooting over up-close-and-personal encounters. Still, there's nothing within the competitive suite that demanded my attention for more than a round or two of play.

The imperfect crime.
The imperfect crime.

All of this is assuming you'll even be able to connect to an online game. Of the 30 or so times I tried to locate matches, I found my way into just three games. The other 27 times? I either failed to connect before the game even started, disconnected after a single spawn, or crashed to the PlayStation 4's dashboard. Sniper Elite III's multiplayer is unstable at best, with most of my playtime revealing a mostly broken experience.

I often found myself cursing the more frustrating elements of Sniper Elite III. Broken matchmaking, and half-baked stealth sequences shouldn't be this incessant in a series that's just reached its third outing. But it's almost too easy to forget all of these head-scratching issues when that bullet makes contact with someone's cranium. It's a shallow, crude pleasure, but the delightful disorder that's just around every corner is strong enough to overshadow an otherwise forgettable experience.

The Good

  • Devilishly satisfying slow-mo kills
  • Level design that encourages creativity
  • Colorful vistas are impressively improved over previous iterations

The Bad

  • Dull stealth sequences
  • Uninspired story
  • Broken matchmaking

About the Author

Josiah Renaudin is a sucker for a good sniping sequence, and has patiently sat atop perches in dozens of shooters to set up the perfect shot. He completed Sniper Elite III's campaign and continuously tried to connect to multiplayer games for the purpose of this review.

Fair Review. I love sniping in all shooters and had fun with V2. This IS the best "sniper-centric" series out there. It's better than V2, but it could have been SO MUCH MORE. Did the developers run out of money? Why do they make it seem like they OVER focused on what they are good at (slo-mo bullet cams) and forgot to invest in other parts of the game. I would give it a 7.5 (I don't do whole numbers). Best in series, glad I bought it, but DAMN! I wanted this to be a groundbreaker.

I honestly feel like the open ended structure of the levels in this game worked against its mechanics more than benefited from them. Ok game, but has potential to be so much more than that.

Good riddance then.

Also, you are going to be "done" with other websites too, because they are not guaranteed to please you all the time with their reviews.

I haven't played this game but I'm willing to bet this deserved a 6 just because of what it is.

But this site has gone to shlt, you're right about that. Go to IGN or Gametrailers. They offer more without all the fancy Brits

@Gravity_Slave Yeah IGN isn't even video game site anymore and they praise CoD. Gametrailers is little better, but still full of Xbox fanboys. I consider Gamespot being best of these three.

Fair Review. In fact given the game breaking bugs (for which i'm going thru right now), even a bit generous. I tried to like it but its just NOT Sniper Elite. As the review kind of states, its more like 007. That doesn't mean its necessarilly a bad game, but hell if you're gonna be sneaking behind enemy lines, wouldn't you want to be dressed in a German Uniform or something? A hat and mask during a sandstorm? I mean the character doesn't even LOOK at all like a Sniper. Problem is your stuck with him even on Coop..

Then your spending all your time crawling around killing everybody with your welrod silencer giving you the "illusion" the maps are big, when its really a very linear experience. The AI is laughably bad. The voices are much too loud, they seem to be able to hear a pin drop in an impractical circumstance etc.

The Campaign lags to high heaven and the MP, well, read the Review. Lets face it. Rebellion is just not a very good Game Developer. They hit a home run with its original title a decade ago on PS2. They should just rebuild that very game in HD and call it a day.

@jagdedge124 "That doesn't mean its necessarilly a bad game, but hell if you're gonna be sneaking behind enemy lines, wouldn't you want to be dressed in a German Uniform or something?" he's a soldier, not a spy. If you were caught behind enemy lines in a fake uniform the geneva convention was invalid. You could be executed on the spot as an unlawful combatant. thats why soldiers didn't do it.

Really can't get into this game even though I like the core sniping of it. The main issue I have is that it doesn't really give you enough resources to shoot competently without the aides turned on, and using the red-dot that appears when you steady aim is just boring and entirely ruins the experience for me.

The force of the wind seems mostly random, with no real way to determine how much it will affect a shot before taking it. Example, first level, plumes of smoke rising pretty much vertically, yet the wind knocks off your shot by about an inch from the centre of the scope when aiming over 200m or so, and has no affect when aiming closer... add to that you can't really tell how far away a person is because there is no range finder, and no way to zero in your sights even if you did know the range...

Basically the only way the game can be played without much trial and error is with assists on, and that totally ruins the point of a sniper game with an actual ballistics model...

I honestly dont think the game was a 6. Sure the AI sucks, the assault rifles feel weak, powerless and spray all over and the stealth is meh, but the fun factor is awesome. Story blows chunks, but for some reason i am having a blast. This is the first bad game i played that i am really enjoying. Everything about this game screams mediocre but my fun factor is pushing an 8

The stealth is dull because the AI is dumb as a bag of rocks. They would do better to not even bother with stealth aspects and instead focus on better simulating bullet penetration. It's a great guilty pleasure kind of game. You know you shouldn't be enjoying such gratuitous gore, but you can't help it.

@liquidbutter Sometimes the AI is brilliant, such as when you're in an elevated position, mostly covered, and then the instant you see an enemy then they also see you too and start firing first. Happened to me all the time in the pre-order DLC.

I am playing this game, it is okay. Fun waste of some time, way to easy and the stealth mechanics suck. You move soo slow and as long as you dont run no one can detect if you are not line of site. Since all enemies are on radar regardless of tagging them or not it make it incredibly easy. Game is way to easy but I can still find some fun, review is pretty on.

Also kill cam actually gets annoying, maybe because i only do headshots

I'm having a really good time with SE3. I turn off the slowmo kill-cam, though.

To anyone who jumps into the MP, if you can't get a shot or don't want to give yourself away, mark them, because someone else on your team probably can hit them. So many people never do it, and teams that do get an easy boost to their kill count.

turn off the slowmo kill-cam... what is even the point? This game is at its best when it is simulating bullet penetration. The rest of the content and features are uninspired and boring. You're really of poor taste if you're actually enjoying this game without the killcams. It just becomes a generic shooter without that.

@liquidbutter Well, I'll start by saying thanks for insulting my taste in games. Nice move. I actually like the sniping in the game. There are better sniping sims out there for a 'real' sniping experience but I like playing a different game, and the slightly more casual physics in SE3 I like sometimes. MP is also good fun, though some modes would be nice.

I don't have the cams on because, as much as I have a big stomach for gore and violence, they remind me of seeing that happen to friends insides, and I don't want to watch it.

@MondasM If you do MP, do some spotting. You may not get the kill yourself, but team score is the only one that counts, and too few help out that way.

In the original Sniper Elite, the bullet cam signaled a conquest and, in a weird way, felt like kicking a fifty yard game-winner in Madden. Now I get a sense the series has become "Bullet Cam: The Game". I even chose the least frequent setting in the NZ games because it became rhythm-breaking and cloying.

If the "6" is a glass-half-full appraisal based on this feature almost by itself, that doesn't bode well for the game as a whole, does it?

A 6/10? Eh, I suppose that's a fair score, considering what I've played of the game. I had a blast with both this and Sniper Elite V2 and I definitely think both games are above average if nothing else. What I AM mad about is that it took weeks for GameSpot to review a relatively high profile game like this but still managed to review a bunch of no-name indie titles in the meantime Then again, I trust gaming journalism reviews about as much as I trust a man in an dark, dank alleyway offering me free candy.

@Chr0noid Hey, my name's Josiah, and I'm the reviewer. So, the review was delayed a bit for a few reasons. First, the code we were given wasn't active until the day it released in the U.S., which was last week. I played through all of the content as quickly as possible, but these things tend to take time. Second, I wanted to give the multiplayer a fair shake to see if there were just early issues preventing me from connecting. After all that, we decided to produce a video review, which makes the process a bit more complex.

So, there were circumstances that led to the publish date of the final product. Appreciate you checking it out, though. I enjoy any and all input.

@Lionheart377 @Chr0noid That was just last week wasn't it? Seems I spoke abruptly there. It wasn't weeks, more like A week. I apologize. This review was spot on though and gave fair credit and fair criticism. Wasn't too harsh and wasn't too gracious with its praise either. You were also dead-on about the story. The story wasn't great in V2 as I recall. Same guy who takes his voice acting job WAY too seriously narrating between missions. Rinse, repeat.

So,if they excluded takedowns and silenced pistol the game would be better ? Ok :)

btw you can mask your shots with explosions you can create by planting mines(3 different types),timed dynamite, throwing a grenade or setting on fire/triggering the explosive environment. It does alert the enemies but it depends on how far are they from the explosion. It's more forgiving than a taking an unmasked shot. It's a neat mechanic where, again, the player needs to improvise.

When you combine those with the ones that are already given to the player, you can snipe and you'll never be detected. Those are not stealth sequences, you can stealth through the whole game.

That's how i played it and i enjoyed it. Idk,it's not for everyone i guess.

@SteXmaN It wouldn't be better if they excluded takedowns and silent pistols. However, since those are so heavily relied upon in the game, it would have been better if the pistols were more effective. The pistols are weak, and only effective up to like 15 feet, and boy if you miss the headshot then they are total crap.

Make me use stealth and silenced pistols all the time in a sniper game, I guess I can live with that, but at least make using the silenced pistol fun if that's the case. I think that's what the reviewer was getting at.
