Leave out cheap nasty DLC that seems so popular nowadays.

Bioware did the right thing with DAI hopefully the trend will continue.

Mass Effect RPG Elements weren't more menus and such, something this article failed to explain.

It was the dialogue, the lore inserted into the game and such.

ME1 had the most RPG elements (exploration of the universe), ME2 had a balance of RPG & action (focus on space crime syndicates/find the enemy), and ME3 had more action and a darker story (the enemy is known->reaper war).

Every ME game had its flaws, every game had its positive things.

And despite ME3's failures, it is still a very good game.

WHY ME3 FAILED (SHORT ANSWER?)

1) EA as a publisher pushed Bioware to finish game sooner. As a result, ME3 suffered in many ways

2) Main writer of of ME1/ME2 and his team (mr. Karpynsky) is pulled out of ME3 to focus on Star Wars MMO story. Story loses focus, culminating in the bad ending (the point that all should be explained)

3)Day 1 DLC (Prothean DLC)

What a failure here! An NPC super-integral to the main story (almost the entire series are about Protheans) is at a DLC. Talk about cheap way to make money. You lose way too much stuff about the story if you dont buy that DLC.

3)Arrival DLC of ME2

When you start ME3, you learn that Shepard has destroyed the entire Batarian System to hold the Reaper invasion.

300,000 batarians dead (almost the entire Batarian race) gets barely a mention from the Council.

Not even a small cutscene in ME3 to explain this. Again you lose major story stuff by not buying the ME2 DLC!

4) TOO FEW PARTY MEMBERS.

ME1 had Shepard & 6 characters (total 6 party members, counting both Ashley/Kaidan)

ME2 had Shepard+12 characters! (total 13 party members, counting both Morinth/Samantha)

Zaeed is free in shop from the 2 DLC choices (Kasumi, Zaeed) is free. So total free 12 members (+1 from DLC)

people dont like Jacob, but with 13 choices you cant blame Bioware, and Jacob serves a purpose (Miranda's ally)

In contrast, ME3 has Shepard+8 characters (total 9 party members, counting both Ashley/Kaidan).

Javik is the Prothean DLC member. So total 8 free members.

James Vega was voted worst ME party member. In reality he is not that bad, he is there to insert new players into the ME universe. The main problem is that we have few party choices already.

5) More Stuff to prove that ME3 is rushed.

Tali picture is a stock picture from the internet (<< LINK REMOVED >>)

Winter Galaxy Ending picture is a stock picture from the internet (<< LINK REMOVED >>)

5) End of ME story/Story of ME3 in general

Where is the Harbinger? why he didn't do anything to stop Shepard?

How Anderson is at the Citadel? Why the Star child explanation of the plot is so bewildering?

Remember the 3 same colored endings and the outrage of the fans in the Bioware forums?

Remember the indoctrination theory in the internet that explained the ghostly kid Shepard was seeing?

IN THE END, Bioware had to produce NEW ENDINGS to explain as a free DLC complete with sliding pictures 3 months after shipping the game. Maybe if they had more time, it would come to this.

WHAT HAPPENED TO BIOWARE AFTER ME3:

Both Bioware creators (Myzuka, Zeschuk) left from the game industry, many Bioware developers (trent oster, Banner saga devs plus some others) left Bioware, and even Casey Hudson, ME head director left in 2014.

Things now are not looking very good for Mass Effect, especially now that EA has tasked Bioware to focus on Star Wars games.

OTHER GAMES THAT EA HAS RUSHED/HANDLED POORLY:

1) Dragon Age 2 (had a production time of only 9 months, which is very short for a game of this caliber, it was negatively received by many gaming sites/people)

2) Whole Madden fiasco (EA got sued because of some price fixing in regards to their competitor 2K)

3)Army of Two:Devil's cartel (poorly received, studio is now in shambles)

4)NBA Live 2014 (poorly received, << LINK REMOVED >>)

5) Battlefield 4 server problems (<< LINK REMOVED >>)

6) Simcity Online server problems (<< LINK REMOVED >>)

PS: For those people who dont know, Dragon Age inquisition would also be rushed.

You would ONLY play as a human character (like Dragon Age 2). Fortunately EA was convinced to give more time.

(<< LINK REMOVED >>)

So, maybe you will understand what happens to games that are rushed..

@Geogyf: i've seen a few people posting this picture and talking crap but did you actually research the author or it's date of production? could very well be someone's rendition of the ending shot from Mass Effect.

it wouldn't surprise me if they took the cheap route and just copied it though after the rest of the game felt so cheap and dumbed down my 1st playthrough. i played through again last year with all the DLC content and though it(DLCs) did add 20 or so hours of play for me the whole game still felt like a lot of dumbed down filler compared to 1 & 2. still worth playing to find out the ending(if you pick the original option), and i did really enjoy the Leviathan story.

I honestly just sort of wonder how they will top the Reapers and their 50,000 years cycle in terms of dire importance. I suppose this is why I was not hired as a Mass Effect 4 writer ;)

Sort of like how the Death Star destroys single planets...oh yeah? the Sun Crusher destroys entire systems (Star Wars novels)....how do top that?

@Delston: Solution: Don't try to top it. ME universe is a rich place, where they can explore more than galactic threats. Make something more personal, that isn't about the fate of the whole galaxy, or anything that isn't trying to be like Shepard's trilogy, only bigger. Bigger isn't necessarily better and things get out of control pretty fast, turning everything into a repetitive boredom of bigger threats trying to top each other. Just scale down the scope of the plot. but make sure the universe still huge and rich for us to explore.

@Delston: The Reapers were copied out from the Wraiths of Stargate:Atlantis.

The Wraiths are an ancient race, and they are the hidden observers of humanity (as the Reapers)
The Wraiths also influence humanity's technological paths in the ways they so desire (as the Reapers)
The Wraiths allow humans to breed, then they consume them when they are enough in numbers (as the Reapers)
The Wraiths leave some humans to reproduce (the Reapers leave the non-advanced races)
The Wraiths harvest (cull) humans every 10,000+ years (the Reapers harvest every 50,000 years)
The Wraiths have a hive ship that observes the human worlds (the Reapers have the Sovereign Reaper)
The Wraiths are a human/bug hybrid (the Reapers are a human/machine hybrid)
The Wraiths ships are semi-organic (as the Reaper ships)

@Geogyf@Delston: Mass Effect always was a collection of several Sci-Fi universes elements, only with their own ME twist. there's references everywhere. The Quarian Flotilla is Battlestar Gallactica Humans trying to survive after being almost extinct by the Cylon (the Geth), The Rachni plot in ME1 is basically Aliens, The Krogan homeworld is ME own take on pos-apocalyptic stories, Spectres are basically Jedi without the force, which find it's representation in biotics. I'm not familiar with star trek, but I'm pretty sure there's a lot of it hidden there.

ME is a pretty unique universe build with pieces of other universes, so there's a lot you can point out and say that it's basically something that they got form another franchise.

@leandrombraz@Geogyf@Delston: Exactly i agree with you 100% percent.

Most of the side missions are from Star trek (TNG, DS9, Voyager) actually.

Asari are inspire from the Orion slave girls from Star Trek 1966 series.

For names, check this youtube link. << LINK REMOVED >>

Its quite good and funny (Mark Meer, the voice of Shepard voices it)

And what is that is so good about Mass Effect.

Even it is not something completely original, it is a magical series and still holds a place in our hearts.

@suppaphly42@Geogyf@Delston: I disagree about some stuff

The Wraith were much more thought out than the Reapers.

Consequently, the Wraith logic doesnt have flaws

(they need humans to live, but at the same time most wraith need to hibernate because if they don't they will eat themselves because they are too many -which eventually happens in the course of the series)

On the other hand, Reaper logic has many flaws

(organics vs synthetics-> it is based on the assumption that all synthetic intelligence will eventually destroy their organic creators.

So the Reapers allow races to flourish in order to make them extinct. Flawed Logic.)

Mass Effect is one of my favorite games, but that doesn't mean i cant point out its (silly) mistakes.

Also Mass Effect is cheesy & corny too. (that's why we like it anyway)

@Geogyf@suppaphly42@Geogyf: how to approach this? hmmm

ok so all i can say is real life is stranger then fiction because fiction has to make sense -mark twain

what i mean by this is the fact that it does not make sense is why it is way more believable then the star gate stuff (don't worry i have watched them all )

and the only thing cheesy & corny in mass effect is "blasto" the big stupid jellyfish

As for me i can say that Mass Effect is one of my favorite games ever, although i can say have many favorite games & series (Final Fantasy series, Baldur's Gate, Suikoden, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Wars etc)

In short, too many!

@Geogyf: I'm not intending to be combative here, but after a few google searches, the Wraiths seem to have been first introduced to Stargate Atlantis in Season 1, 2004-ish. Mass Effect 1 was announced in October of 2005. One can reasonably assume that they started on the game even before that with a basic storyline as one of the first catalysts to development. I would say the same for the Stargate show, but imagine they have a shorter development cycle than a game does.

My point is it seems that these may have been two very similar ideas conincidentally developed in isolation, only seeming to be copies due to development time (ME1 releasing in November 2007, or somehow the concept was brought from ME to SG:A (reverse of your claim). Perhaps someone jumped ship from BioWare and brought the concept with them.

Just a thought with about 5 mins of googling behind it.

@<< LINK REMOVED >>

One of the things I worry about is the corner that the series backed itself into with the 1-of-3 endings approach which led humanity into three different directions; rebuilding after the destruction of the Reapers, rebuilding with the help of the Reapers, or everyone joining with technology and essentially becoming Reapers.

The only ending that made any sense to me was to destroy the reapers. I choose it every time. The entire plot was going in the direction until the sharp left turn Star Child Surprise. The other two endings are not my ending, so either one appearing in a new Mass Effect would make me uneasy about buying the game.

No matter which ending someone picked, they can be seen as so huge and different, there's no way they wouldn't change the entire galaxy for Mass Effect. In one ending, Shepard is still around and controlling the Reapers and so the Reapers are still a character and so is Shepard. In another ending, everyone is one with the AI. Or everything in the universe is in ruin and it's time to rebuild from the husks of the Reapers. It's not like the Hero of Ferelden where you either die, or not, during the battle with the ArchDemon, and make a cameo in a future game. With Mass Effect, everything has changed pretty much forever.

Plus, none of that crap makes any sense anyway. "We built AI to come and kill you so your AI won't will you."

shouldn't have cover based combat, this is not Gears of War.

shouldn't sell out and change the original ending with DLC because some kids cry about it.

shouldn't have multiplayer.

@suppaphly42: i understand any shooter should have cover as an option but when every stage is designed with a crouch here, crouch here, crouch here linear setup like ME3 it's just cheesy. i avoided cover as much as possible and tried to stick to open area fights but 75% of the stages were all designed the same way.

that's sad if the majority of the audience can't understand the original intelligent ending.

all i heard was "kids" whining about how they couldn't understand the classic sci-fi themed ending, that there wasn't enough pomp and flash at the end, and that the other characters didn't have enough of a role in it.

hate to inform people but the majority of good sci-fi has very subtle, very thoughtful themes the same as ME did. most does not end with just a big explosion, boss fight, celebration, or loud music. people just didn't get the 3 games worth of intelligence vs artificial intelligence, feeling vs instinct, and the path it was all leading towards? the point was him being a hero and transcending on passed what he was to improve the situation of the state of the galaxy.

i dont have my hopes up for the next Mass Effect but there is always a slight chance it will stick to the roots of the game and the genre and be a good release.

@suppaphly42: as your comment is disagreeable.

the conversation has come up many times over the passed few years and i haven't heard anyone that really cares about games or any intelligent form of art complain about the original ending of ME3. just kids posting on the internet how there wasn't enough flash and the other characters weren't involved.

that was the point the artists intended. after all the drama about intelligence and artificial intelligence, emotions and instincts through the games it was a big deal with a lot of poignancy that Shepard decided to leave the physical plane to make a difference for all.

it's the same as taking a great book and releasing a new ending months later because the pop-culture idiots didn't get it.

Lucy's hair style is the same one as the default female character in Inquisition ;o

Well there was an official survey Bioware did some while ago and I already told them what I want :]

What I can do without are the looooooooooong loading times. Judging by how Inquisition was though, long loading times aren't going anywhere.

I know an SSD HDD might help, but still, other big games like Skyrim and Watchdogs load much faster on my PC.

@meedokicky: The load times are actually a result of the animation. The game doesn't let the game proceed until the animation is complete. There's a mod on NexusMods that replaces them with static cards.

In Inquisition, there are some sort of cards in the loading screen, which you can swap for different information, so I thought you mean "that" kind of cards lol
