If I don,t find anything fun why would I waste my time with it ?

The gameplay could be fun, the story can be fun etc

And some game even with all that are just boring, they may lack a soul.

Not so long ago I had a blast playing Horizon Zero Dawn and also Danganronpa and Zero Escape or Mortal Kombat XL. All those games were fun to me for different reasons.

I don't like corridor simulators, so TLOU was pretty much a chore to finish.

Games that aren't that fun but have something special to show, like Spec Ops the Line and Last of Us, are always on my radar. Buuuut if you put some kind of gameplay I hate, like turn-based or floaty combat, I steer clear. Too bad, final fantasy vii really have a great story, but didn't went farther than Barret's flashback.

@malowski3: it was, just it wasn't as other games where fun is central and gameplay didn't evolve much (like, for example, Alan Wake). Wouldn't change a thing about those masterpieces tough.

Do videogames need to be "fun" in the most pure and lighthearted sense? Not necessarily. If not those, they should at least be "fun" in the entertaining, immersing, enthralling, challenging, and/or engaging sense(s). Do we really need a long discussion about that? It's not exactly complicated.

Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. I get cranky when I'm hungry.

@rawkstar007: When That Dragon, Cancer came out, I remember reading a comment on this site saying that the developers were monsters - how could they make a game that would make people feel sad? With ignorant opinions like that, clearly we do need to have the conversation.

@rawkstar007:

"Do we really need a long discussion about that?"

No. This is the problem. We should be going deeper into the topic, discussing how games can be not fun. How games have done it well, how they've failed at it, and what can be improved. But instead of diving into that we get stuck on the initial question "Do games need to be fun?" because a certain demographic of gamers still get very upset every time you suggest these could be more than just a lighthearted joyride. For some reason we always get stuck trying to explain the concept to them. So it ends up being a long discussion just about a basic principle that really shouldn't need this much explanation.

@saturatedbutter: Proving a negative would be a difficult task, let alone one based on opinion. I'm not entirely convinced that having that particular discussion would have enough merit.

I. Need. Food. Someone bring me some saltines. Something. ANYTHING.

There was nothing wrong with the title you guys. Just some extremely touchy little boys that get very angry and political when you disagree with them about their toys. This subject has been going on for a long time, and I think attempts to over-explain it to the "games are toys" type gamers is just holding back the progress of the discussion. At some point you just have to ignore them and go deeper into the topic.

Most of today's video games are not fun , I rather play old retro games on NES, Sega Genesis , Gamecube, Original Xbox, even Atari 2600 they are way more fun then today's games !

@Deathstalker83: I've been playing video games since Sears Pong and even I think you're out of your mind. But I'll admit that I can't play any Road Rash game for less than an hour.

@Deathstalker83: You must care very deeply or you wouldn't have replied at all, much less so defensively.

Based on this brief interaction, I can tell that you're having a difficult time letting go of your childhood.

You might not have stuffed animals on the bed anymore but they're in a nearby closet. That collection of comic books and Mad magazines gets dusty, yes...but only just. Beer tastes "icky" to you but you're always up for a white russian or B52.

It's okay, though. You're okay. You're very special, just like each of us are special.

@hellnawafflecar: Doing something different than everyone else because you enjoy doing it is not a hipster. A hipster is someone who does something different than everyone else even if they don't enjoy it just to be different.

@hellnawafflecar: No, it is not what he is doing. He said he does it because he finds older games more fun. It is you who are confused.

@richipuppy: except he's making a broad statement about games he's never played (unless youre saying he plays them anyway, despite "knowing" he won't like them) to a crowd he knows will disagree with him, in order to set himself apart.

so either he's a hipster, or a troll.

but thanks for playing :)
