Feedbackula - Steam Machine Madness!

Valve has confirmed the existence of both Steam OS and the long rumoured Steam Machines. Our commenters weren't sure what to make of either, so Johnny's here to try and make sense of it all.

I find it interesting that this guy really gets perturbed about people talking about some one's sexual orientation but has no problem blurting out some totally asinine statement about the Amish and polygamy. Bad show. If you're going to be vocal about one group but find it simple to slam another, then you're a hypocrite.

I was originally impressed about how you stood up for another's sexual orientation but the lack of respect you have for other groups just shows how thin your statements are. Bad show.

@cyclonebw Build your own ITX box and put it under the TV then. Valve is pretty open.

Well Valve is about to do the worst mistake in their life's. Steam OS is a completely useless thing. Everyone have a pc, they like or not, most of the people don't use the pc only for gaming and its a fact, actually less then half of the world pc users play games! Quiet weird I know but is the true! If you want a dedicate gaming hardware buy a console, and that is the reason why people buy consoles, because they don't want spend to much money to build a pc for playing games, buying a console is much cheaper and don't need build and have additional costs unlike a pc, and you can play almost all games on it.

@WillyWynn A Steam Machine is still a PC, you can do anything on it. The Steam OS focuses on games but it doesn't mean it will lock you down solely to that activity, we'll have to wait and see how flexible it is once its released, but its free so who give a shit. Valve's reason for doing this has been very clear with Gabe's statement on Windows 8 and Microsoft's direction in general.

Criticizing Steam OS without the damn thing even being released is just foolish and shows you're just a fanboy.

Well, sounds interesting, but I don't think that this is going to be successful in some way, because PC is not used for gaming only, people will more appreciate the flexibility of windows, linux etc. operating systems and a lot of useful programs, you know.

But maybe this can be installed into the HDD as second OS for a Windows or Linux based PC-system, so if you want to go play games with SteamOS, you just restart the PC and hit the desired OS you want to boot with. So, no problems using both operating systems.

So essentially it's a somewhat open-source xbox... it's not a PC by any means, there's no way they'd allow users to mess with the hardware side of things, which is major point for PC gamers. Do we really need another console out there? Somehow I doubt it... they should instead work on miniaturization of current hardware, let us put our PCs in the living room and that's all we need... well, it would also be nice to have a company who makes gaming PCs and doesn't charge your first newborn for it (I'm looking at you Alienware).

it needs to be good, very good and it needs to be affordable. if it is both of those then it stands a chance, and i will be happy to get one to run alongside my aging pc, rather than upgrade.

To me, the SteamBoxes just seem like the Wii of the PC gaming world.

Think about it: Nintendo targeted the super-casual gamers and non-gamers with their "fun" motion sensing console and moved a lot of units. Then inevitably, the casual/non gamers stopped buying as much software because the trendy hip factor wore off and they went back to doing whatever they did before pretending to be gamers. Because Nintendo did not do enough to court the Hardcore segment of the gaming community *(the people that BUY software CONSISTANTLY), they were left with dwindling game sales, which translated into less hardware sales, which in turn led to less developer support *(You know where this is going). Which forced them to release the WiiU in response to the overwhelming dominance from the BIG 2 to underwhelming sales numbers and general apathy from the gaming community.

Now Valve has somehow theorized that the time is ripe to cash in on a whole new crop of "Casual" gamers with dedicated set-top box that is easily accessible to people who don't want to build a gaming PC or buy one of those absurdly expensive pre-built gaming PC/Laptops and uber-trendy for those folks who don't want to own a mainstream gaming console because they find that far too Passé` for their highly refined tastes.

Will history repeat itself; or set a new precedence?Only time will tell.

Nice Feedbackula, keep it up!

SteamOS may be the next big thing, but as a console junkie I'm not particularly interested. I ditched PC gaming years ago because I got sick and tired of upgrading. Who needs yet another thing which needs to be fed new audio and graphics cards on a regular basis to survive. It's much easier to take care of fish in a tank, and a bit cheaper, too.

@webhunter "Who needs yet another thing which needs to be fed new audio and graphics cards on a regular basis to survive" -- Oh I dunno, maybe the millions of PC gamers out there? Some people are perfectly happy with their little living room box and game picture that looks like myopia smudged all over the oversized screen, and some of us like to push the graphics until every last strand of hair looks perfect... until the game world can actually fool the user into thinking it's real... take a look at some of the high quality screenshots of BF3, Aerofly, Project Cars, and many other current gen titles, they look like photos... this type of quality is WAY beyond what consoles are capable of. Then there's modding, some 10 year old + games still have active communities because they're constantly updated through mods. So going by your reasoning, who wants a box full of myopia and stunted non-features?

I think this is for the people who don't want to build their own pc, and that is all. Controller is great i think, because it is revolutionary, but other than that i don't know what is new really.

Hmmm..

I'm still confused as to who it's trying to target. PC gamers have their super-rigs whereas console gamers are usually happy with what they've got anyway - hence not making the leap to PC.

The choice to go over to Valve's tech is cool an all, but can it provide the exclusives only available on consoles? No, likely not. It's the Uncharted's and Halo's etc. that have kept me a console gamer the past two generations. Steam gaming may look to be good, but on a personal level I probably wouldn't be as pleased with the games on offer.

I wish Valve well, but meh... It's likely not for me.

(p.s. doesn't an open platform also increase the likelihood of players cheating via mods and hacks?)

@warhawk-geeby Regarding cheating, I don't think it would be that big of a difference: the vast majority of cheats are software level--which means it doesn't matter if the platform is open. I can't really imagine any way you could cheat by modifying your rig on the OS level.

You know this will actually have to be a pretty beefy machine before many actual gamers will even take notice. If they build a box that sports something like a Core i3 processor and a GeForce GT 640 or something, that would handle casual gamers quite well, but folks that want to play Battlefield 3 or Crysis 3 on highest settings won't get very far on a system like that. I like the specs on the PS4 myself but for serious PC gamers to really turn their heads Valve needs to put something together that at least goes neck and neck with the PS4 and as is standard Steam fashion do it cheaper than the competition.

If Feedbackula is going in a new direction and all that Johnny should get a new haircut. I think he should shave the top of his head and let the sides and back grow out this time. You know the opposite of the haircut he has now.
