I love Destiny.

But I'm only getting about 50% out of the game. I don't have 5 people to Raid with :( (I've still not done VoG). I've tried looking in forums etc, but I don't have a mic, and nobody really wants to carry a casual through a Raid at this time.

It's frustrating, 'cos I have plenty of exotics and I'm lvl 29 and etc. But I feel like a big chunk of the game is denied me :(

@tom_cat_01 You can find a group by asking around and using destinylfg. I just had a group of 6 we randomly threw together on Sunday. Granted, we did have 4 of us for starters scheduled to be on at the same time. All of us were first time Vault of Glass players and got all the way to Atheon. We even had 2 people with NAT issues that couldn't talk. The only reason we didn't finish is because it just got too late, but if we would have had more time I know we could have finished. Vault of Glass isn't that hard to be honest, it just takes some time to learn if its your first time. But once you understand what to do, its not that bad. But maybe thats partly because I used to play WoW and thought those 40 man raids were way more of a test back in the vanilla days.

@tom_cat_01 The raids are fun but sometimes they take quite a bit of time to put a raid group together. I did one last night and it took about an hour to get 6 people together to do a raid.

@tom_cat_01 You should really save up for even a cheap $20 mic because raids are a huge part of the Destiny experience, and destinylfg.com is one of the easiest ways to find a raid group. Most of my raid runs have been through forums with randoms but I've made quite a few new friends this way and had a blast. Now I just need to find some spare time to do Crota's End.

Jump off the deep end and join one of those groups. Even if you suck the first time you'll never see those people again and you will learn the raid for your next group.

Pluss, get a mic, it's not expensive on ebay, save up if you have to. It makes the game even better chatting with peeps.

Why are they still wasting their time with this game? The game was a commercial success, but failed miserably as a game. Move on and let it die.

I think these hardcore players don't realise how hard it is for normal players to reach 31. What normal player was keeping glimmer and hoarding marks to get new gear and upgrade exotics? I'm not even lvl 30 yet and I probably clock 4 hours a week.

The only thing that annoys me is trying to get radiant materials - to upgrade one piece of Crota Gear to the max you'll need around 22 shards. That means about 4-5 run throughs of Crota's End. Too much grind of one element.

Easy fix - make VoG produce radiant materials also.

@DarkFrankhs I can't believe people are stupid enough and desperate enough to grind through these same missions over and over, when they weren't exciting in the first place.

This will always be a problem in MMOs and games where the focus is around personal progression.

When the hook that keeps your players going is seeing their character grow in power, you have to keep the steady increase in stats going. Not too slow that they lose interest, but not too quickly that players end up hitting the cap too soon and get bored waiting for new content.

This is why you end up with mechanics designed purely as time sinks, to waste the player's time by grinding content they long lost interest in for a piece of gear, only to have it made worthless soon after.

The enduring success of games like Counter-Strike and the Battlefield series have shown that people can and will play games obsessively without the need for a metaphorical treadmill to give the illusion that you're actually achieving something by playing the same raid or multiplayer map 100 times over.

@GreenMan Actually battlefield (esp 3 and 4) is full of grindy unlocks for gear and especially with 4 where the battlepack system has introduced a random element to the upgrades. Although I concede i never played battlefield for the unlocks, it s actually possible to be competitive with very basic gear, as long as your teamwork is effective. While destiny does have elements of teamwork ie for the raids, mostly people are paying for personal gain (loot).

Yeah fair point. I should have mentioned that I was referring to the early Battlefields such as 1942 and BF2.

I just feel that games have increasingly become more mechanical and transparent with their systems, more cynical with the way they hook their players and keep them going. I almost have this image of the developer's studio being powered by gamers running endlessly in a wheel with a twinky dangling just out of reach.

Normally I wouldn't mind because I can just experience the content I want, maybe run some raids a couple of times for fun and then not bother, but if the grind becomes a requirement and the only way to get your money's worth is to join the rest of the masses in their wheels then the game is ruined in my eyes.

There must be a better way to design an MMO (or online games with similar tropes like Destiny).

@GreenMan I felt like Guild Wars 2 struck a nice balance for an MMO. It never felt too grindy and I basically just played it as a SP adventure game and had fun with it at my own pace, joining in with some larger scale PvE or PvP gameplay when I felt compelled to do so. Games like this though, or most end-game MMO content, or even something like Diablo 3 to some extent, they get way too repetitious and demanding with their grinding requirements just to get ANYTHING out of the game.

I hate how we're seeing those same mechanics bleed over into other genres, specifically recent shooters like CoD and BF games where there's an endless stream of unlockables. I never needed such things when I enjoyed the first CoD and older BF games, and now those mechanics just get in the way of the weapon, or attachment, or customization option I want... of course they give you real money options to works around that in some of these games now... :(

eeeehhh... the whole gear treadmill, "the set you worked hard to get will become worthless by the next release" (and by consequence, all the content previous to that release will be obsolete) mentality that so many MMOs carry is just stupid, and i don't get it. i understand the race to constantly improve yourself, but not if there's no upper limit.

at least my MMO of choice doesn't do that stuff, so i'm good. still, a bit annoying that even a game like destiny would fall to such trappings.

@emptycupofgames wrong. an MMO is like any other game, if you aren't having fun and your progress keeps being taken from you, what's the point?

just because it (somehow) has been the genre standard for a long time doesn't mean it's the best way to handle it. again, the one i play focuses more on horizontal progression. reaching the stat cap is easy, but it's not the point.

So they are going the MMO route xcompletely and they screwed it allll up. See its the level aspect that ruins it. 31 and 32 for a new raid? Just made the previous raid like they said worthless. Least wow keep everyone 100 but a new set of gear makes running and doing things easier. No story making, player's work trivialized.

I think people are pretty starved for games if they need to play this desperately. it looks like that desperate.

For example, why doesn't this game have a 12v12 multiplayer (at least 12v12. Not like the game is amazing looking or 60fps)? Why isn't there a Horde Mode like multiplayer where your gear matters? Why aren't there Sparrow racing where you can bet items/glimmer? Why are they releasing a pathetic amount of strikes per *expansion* when its essentially recycled story missions/patrol environment with a Boss at the end?

What is their problem? Trying to create the less amount of content possible and charge a premium or what? So much potential and all *******

Very True.

I just want more! There isn't enough, and their needs to be more stuff. "Stuff" as in everything.

Bungie is also trying to appeal to casual/hardcore players. Really, I think they should just make up their mind and pick one, (preferably hardcore, there seems to be more hardcore players rather than casual players in Destiny)

As soon as they get their whole target audience figured out, then they should work on content.

They're moving in the right direction, but for a huge game developing company like Bungie, I feel that they should of been way past these issues.

I like Destiny, but it needs more improvement and content.

@gregglle I like the game for what it is but not for what it has, if that makes any sense?

What I'm trying to say is basically, that I like it to the point where I want more! I just wish Destiny had more.

I'm not in denial, I KNOW that Destiny isn't good. Bungie didn't advertise it right (We had way different expectations), they showed content in trailers that wasn't in the first game, there was no story, there isn't enough content to support the game as a whole, the leveling system needs work, etc.

But for some reason, I (along with lots of other people) are still playing the game. I am enjoying Destiny at its core, but it still needs more improvement.

I care about it enough that I want the game to improve and hopefully it will by Destiny 2.

So much about Destiny doesn't make sense to me. Before the expansion my leveling stopped when I got to 25 or so, not because I wasn't willing to grind, but because there was no match-making for the nightfalls and weeklies.

Speaking as someone whose friends aren't into Destiny or are on other systems, I appreciated the chance to get to 31 through vendor gear, which is what I'm working on now. Since this opens vault of glass to me for the first time, I'm tempted to go through the community to find people to do it with, but now that there's no point unless I'm desperate for a mythoclast, it seems like more trouble than it's worth. Hardcore raiders have had their gear devalued and now that the rest of us are able to attain the necessary level we have no incentive.

Bungie should never have put obstacles like this in the way of players who don't have a ready-made community to go raiding with, it just seems so dumb. I guess they think they're forcing people to build relationships through their game - it's the only explanation I can think of - but I dunno if I can be arsed. I haven't bought the expansion and I'm probably going to pack it in for good now since I'm getting Dragon Age for Christmas. Too many other good games are around to excuse this kind of sloppiness.

I find it annoying that one of the commentators thinks that it's the hardcore players who've gotten the shaft. No, it's the casual players who've gotten the shaft with the whole of Destiny, as so much of the game is hidden behind various walls, much of the higher end content is beyond difficult and delves into the realm of tedium and monotony, and there's far too much repetitious (and lacking) content. It's primarily hardcore players who have and will continue to endure the above kind of nonsense in this game.

A way to keep the raids about sort of forming your own team to stay organised, but also add matchmaking would be if you had a fireteam of 3, you could matchmake so that 2 teams of 3 would be put together. That would be perfect I think

The expansion is exactly why I didn't play the raid over and over, because I had a feeling the new gear would make everything obsolete. I finished it 4 or 5 times, and didn't get any of the gear and gave up on it.

The fundamental problem with their complaints is that Bungie clearly DOESN'T want everyone to experience the Raids because if they did then they'd implement matchmaking. As it stands I'll never get to experience them because not all of my friends even own the game and even if they did it wouldn't be possible to coordinate schedules to all play at the same time. I like the look and the feel of the game, but other than that you'd think this is Bungie's first time creating a game the way everything else has been so poorly executed.

My main gripe is there is absolutely NO diversity in the missions or strikes. I mean, the dark below was a chance for Bungie to introduce new elements to the game.

How about areas you NEED a specifice weapon (like a sniper rifle) to progress?

Or how about a huge Boss who can only be take down in vehicles?

How about puzzles in the actual missions?

How about adding a new planet instead of recycling 90% of the game world?

How about sections you have to complete in a time limit?

How about missions where you have to protect an emissary or convoy?

How about having to kill enemies in a certain order?

HOW ABOUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN REPETITIVE SHOOTING???? Hell, i could design a destiny mission, just throw a bunch of bad guys in a linear path, shoot them, and then shoot more while the ghost does something. YAY!

I was hoping the dark below would have some cool variety, mine-cart sections, huge bosses, maybe even some more stealth sections in missions - but its just the same crap over again.

The entire point of Destiny should never be the raid. Not everyone wants to play the game at it's hardest difficulty. I don't mind that aspect of it but I have no desire to play anything that doesn't have matchmaking nor anything where I'm going to have to mash buttons on my controller for 3 to 5 straight hours.

It's time for Bungie to pull their heads out of their asses and start putting some work into all aspects of this game, not just some cut and paste bounties that have you grind for a week for a useless set of gauntlets...I'm looking at you Eris.

Another case in point...look at this months Iron Banner. It serves no purpose at all. Why grind for a couple of pieces of gear that are exactly the same as what the vendors sell except for maybe 67 discipline instead of 66? And the 2 weapons being offered are worse than vendor weapons. Most people are going to be saving glimmer to upgrade all those exotics instead of forking out 11k for junk.

I don't see how this new lazy, slacker Bungie is going to be able to pull this sorry ass game out of it's tailspin. They don't have the talent nor the work ethic. They do just enough to get by and nothing more.

@Martyr77 GS reviewers, they might have been paid for that. By Activision. You know.

Rest of us, yeah. After reading that the game story was butchered after main writer has left the team, I have completely lost any interest to play it anymore. Realising that we have received only the shell of what the game should have been is all but motivational. I just cannot understand why did they decide to scrap almost fully fleshed out story instead of postponing a game while finding new writer to tie the lose ends. Lack of care about what is being served to customers is really... bewildering, to say at least. Insulting, to be frank.

I played destiny a TON when it released. September basically had no games and I just played destiny. That grind fest isn't even appealing to me anymore and I'm happy I didn't get the DLC prelaunch. That's ridiculous that you would expect the DLC to monumentally change the game. It's always going to be more of the same.... duh
