@constantterror Human annihilation will come first and Earth will be fine. We'll be wiped from the planet and she will grow and thrive without us, just like she did for millions of years before our existence.

There are several known types of parasites that alter the behavior of their hosts, often to encourage them to be eaten by the target host in which the parasites can reproduce. (These were alluded to in Resident Evil 4.) What wasn't alluded to was the fact that there is such a parasite that infects humans! Toxoplasma gondii reproduces in cats (and lions, tigers) and will infect the brains of animals eaten by cats (including humans!) and make them behave recklessly so they will be more likely to be eaten by cats. Toxo-infected people have been scientifically shown to have altered personalities, such as men being more aggressive, women being more intelligent, and everyone being more likely to be in car accidents.
What's really scary is that about half of US citizens are infected in their lifetimes (permanently), for example. (90% of French citizens by age 20!)
Risk factors are eating undercooked meat and owning cats (spread by their feces). If a pregnant woman is infected for the first time, the parasite can kill the baby or cause severe birth defects. That's why doctors tell pregnant women to avoid cats!

@InfectX Women being more intelligent?

Intelligence is affected by two factors: genes, and environment (schooling). No infection of the brain can ever lead to an increase in intelligence. Most likely an infection of the brain leads to inflammation of the brain itself and manifests as disorders stemming from psychological to systemic such as disrupted endocrine and neural functioning.

No fungus can lead to an increase in intelligence. I can assure you that if indeed such a fungus can, massive amount of governmental and private research will be invested in understanding this phenomenon.

@beardface21 @InfectX
First of all, T. gondii is a protist, not a fungus.

Second, it has been statistically demonstrated that women infected with T. gondii are more intelligent than those who are not, across all cultures.

@InfectX @beardface21 That's cool.

But the medical community is still not going to jump on gondii thing until more tests prove that it does not have adverse long term effects and any other side effects that were not detected in the small population samples they used.

Until then, this study you've shown, as thorough as it is and informative, still does not paint the this gondii as something that people should willingly get.

There is a very similar video on Vsauce3. It just gives a slightly darker outlook on the possibility of an epidemic.

But to cause aggression in such a specific way it'd fit a "zombie" stereotype would require an extremely complex fungus to only attack specific portions of the brain at slow enough rates. Even if we tried to develop such a fungus, it would be extremely difficult and would take a very long time to do.

@SoulxReaperx366 In the 1980's they also said it would take a thousand years to map the human genome. 10 years later they started using DNA or part of that genome to identify suspects in crimes. The future may not be as far away as people think.

@Halloll There are theories, one is the insane and well known due to the sexy part; this one states that some crazy dudes had sex with monkeys in rituals, religious practices with monkey rituals with monkey blood and stuff etc etc, there's the other one, monkey-phagia (lol) eating monkey meat, monkey stuff and crap from monkey which in many parts from Africa is the daily menu I guess, and theres the third one that imo is the most plausible: Hunting monkeys: imagine how can you hunt monkeys or gorillaz without guns in the middle jungle, I mean old school, is a naughty business, in fact hunting parties send about 4-5 hunters to range the gorilla but theres always 1 or 2 hunters that have to face 1 on 1 the monkey or gorilla to strike him down, that hunter is the one that gets scratched, punched, bit, or in the other words infected by gorilla and monkey fluids and blood, thats how scientist believe the HIV my have made the jump to human species, cause a fact is HIV is native virus in gorillaz,

@Santosmares @Halloll Very good theory but the virus can't deal with the outside world. So it had to be sex. Tribes been living beside them before recorded history highly doubt it was the locals.

@Halloll In some cultures monkeys are considered a food delicacy. The only thing required to pass HIV is bodily fluids. Simple touch probably wouldn't do it, but a veterinarian trying to heal a monkey is another method. Then of course there IS the method you stated.

I appreciate it when authors take some time to do research for a piece, however informal or brief it may be. I had no idea who Daniel Kish was before this video. Thanks!

I don't care if Cordyceps isn't (so far) a threat to humans, the fact that this kind of substance exists naturally scares the crap out of me. I've known of Cordyceps' influence on The Last of Us for some time, but I simply can't get over how Mother Nature can create something so ingenious. It terrifies me as to what else she may have hidden in her repertoire.

@PlatinumPaladin Recent study's show that some plants can communicate and problem solve. watch this it's great lol http://science.discovery.com/tv-shows/through-the-wormhole/videos/cuscuta-parasite.htm

Still I say the most terrifying is the male killing and male castrating wolbachia and Sacculina look up those if you want trouble sleeping at night lol.

Good video.

I've seen that same documentary on the Cordyceps fungus before, and when you think about it is probably the closest real-life thing we have to a mind-controlling virus, and in that same documentary David Attenborough talks about how there are several different strains of Cordyceps, each of which targets a specific species of insect/arthropod in the Amazon in order to keep its population numbers in check, and warns that the more numerous a species becomes the more chance it has of falling victim to the Cordyceps.

Maybe that's why it jumped to humans in The Last of Us- we had become too numerous...

Google Toxoplasma Gondii. It is a parasite that infests the brain and can cause mental disorders like schizophrenia.

Humans get it from cats.

While the idea of 'zombie' like creatures is never going to seem scientifically viable to me (infected or not you are not going to withstand being shot more than anyone else who isn't infected), it is interesting to explore the chance of a mind altering infection hitting us in a way that could mirror the behaviour of zombies.

Something I thought might be brought up by this video but wasn't is toxoplasmosis (look it up). Effectively it is a parasite that wants to be in cats, but infects everything. When it infects a rat it is able to alter the rat's instincts to keep away from cats and effectively increase its chance of being transmitted to a cat by getting the rat eaten. It is also thought to be linked with several mental illnesses in humans showing that a mutation in the strain could possibly lead to psychosis for humans and lead to a zombie like epidemic. Unlikely, but still not impossible :)

I Think Rabies is the closest to classic "Zombie" it causes aggression and delirium and is spread through bites.

The sting of Emerald("Jewel") wasps (Or Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga with spiders) causes the insect to lose it's "Flight or fight" response and be very "zombie like"(so the wasp can lay eggs in it)

The list goes on worms that make insects drowned themselves(Spinochordodes tellinii), bacteria and barnacles that can alter the host's sex and behavior(wolbachia and Sacculina) in my opinion real life has far scarier things then "zombies" but your 100% correct that nothing brings back the dead like in story's.
