I disagree. For me, I enjoy the classic RPG approach to games which is what I believe the developers went for here. There's a core story arc that you can plow through or pace yourself with and then there is a litany of side content that is consistent with the narrative focus of the game and builds upon the overall universe that you're exploring/creating. I love this style of game as it allows me to engage the content in way that feels natural. I feel like far too few reviewers appreciated the careful crafting that was required to make this world feel authentic and believable. It's all there. Whether you decide to pay attention to it is entirely up to you.

In my opinion we have plenty of brief heavily narrative focused games that players can get through in 10-20 hours. That isn't what I want from a space based RPG epic. Perhaps I'm in, what appears to be, a narrow subsect of gamers that appreciate ambition and depth. I wouldn't give BotW a 10/10 but I also don't see how MEA is worse than Ghost Recon Wildlands. I guess I'm just a dying breed.

@micnet007: Everyone I talked to thats played it loves it. I really think fans are liking it more than reviewers. And you cant really go by user reviews on Metacritic- really, for any game.

@JEF8484: Oh I wouldn't use the user review section on Metacritic for anything more than an ongoing study of the "hive mind" mentality of the human species. The most common review scores are 10 and 0! People are basically throwing free thought and objectivity out the window to either support a game that they like and/or haven't played or to trash a game that they don't like and/or haven't played.

@micnet007: I think its better than games like Horizon Zero Dawn, which do absolutely nothing to stand out for the AAA pack.

@texasgoldrush: I think that this game's core issue is that so many people are keen to compare to the the first 3. So it's not really an issue of "is this game good?" It's more of a "does this game best our memories of the previous entries?" I think that's why BotW scored so high because the more recent entries weren't that great.

I don't care how intelligent you are how great your memory is, your recollection of the first three games is most likely exaggerated and over flattering. So when you hold one game against your own "best of compilation" from the 3 previous games, it's easy to be disappointed.

I played the 10 hour trial and was thoroughly enthralled with what the game was attempting to do so I bought it and haven't had any reason to regret that decision so far. I'm sitting at roughly 55 hours of playtime with approximately 40% completion and am still enjoying myself. I can see where it's not a game for everyone, but for the traditional RPG gamer I feel like it's right up their alley.

My biggest fear from the overall reception that I've seen is that this new storyline will be driven down the same path as the previous entries which is to say "an action game on broad rails with a heavy narrative focus." Hopefully the developers find a way to incorporate the collective criticism into their current game design, but as a betting man I wouldn't count on it.

Really? This is when game journalists over argue their position. There is indeed filler, but its only 20% of the game. And its not like the other games in the series had filler.

MEA is not that big, its actually smaller than DAI when it comes to world size. But here is the deal that Jess and other game journalists miss about Andromeda. The game is a huge narrative web, where storylines come together and meet constantly, where a mission can deal with three issues at once, and where quest design actually came from story design.

If you want a worse example than MEA, try FFXV. Some how journalists want to ignore its filler content and bash MEA instead. What do you know, reviewers praised its filler. This is why I do not trust game reviewers anymore.

And really looking back, the Mass Effect Trilogy has some very glaring faults, than Andromeda actually fixes, so really its not a step backwards. In fact, I could argue that ME2 was a step backwards to ME1, and that MEA went back to ME1 and expanded on it while keeping the best of ME2 and ME3.

@texasgoldrush: I've never seen so much negative bias towards a game. I think a lot has to do with "priming"- a psychology a term that plays into that over emphasis of the animations. A lot of herd mentality with the reviewers for this game and the negatives were amplified.

Totally disagree with this video because if the maps had been smaller then people would've moaned that they didnt get enough driving time in the nomad. And whats the point in making these planets look amazing if no one is going to take the time on them to explore ?.

@alonzo09:Aside from the fact that squad banter seems to be tied to driving the Nomad, I don't think it (the Nomad) would have been missed if the maps had been smaller but filled with recurring and interesting characters. And wouldn't walking around areas of a planet give more incentive to explore? I almost missed a couple of quests (at the Wind Farm on Kadara for example) because I was driving around in the Nomad and thought it was just some random prefab with no name enemies and random junk.

@Caduceus89: well maybe you didn't spend enough time on the tempest because their was plenty of banter on the ship ? And people asked for the nomad and thats what they got, too many people want to complete the game as quickly as possible and not take the the time to enjoy the game and take it all in.

@alonzo09: I meant when you're actually on different planets with the Nomad. And I think a lot of people were really asking for the return of UNC worlds when they talked about the return of the Maeko.

What a great video. Explains exactly what is wrong with the game. I also can agree with the statement that the game really kicks into gear at the 40-50 hour mark.... I spent a total of 70 hours in the game and got a 96% completion. I am happy to be done with it. I am currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn and it is not even funny how much better the game looks and feels. It is a perfect statement saying that Mass Effect Andromeda is not a bad game but a hollow game with some good experiences mixed in. Not the best effort from Bioware.

Nice feature folks, I like this. Is this going to be a more frequent feature where you guys analyze a particular game design choice that made or broke any given game?

I would love to se more content like this, keep up the great work folks.

The Witcher 3 is constantly referenced in these kind of videos and I think I need to pick it up finally this summer. It seems like CDPR did open world correctly while Bioware didn't.

@asneakypoptart: Indeed amazing game and I highly recommend all to get it, this is a game where there are "layered" quests, the main overall plot, the area has several plots then side quests. The large quests all connect and send you into directions where side quests can get found and it promotes exploring. Story is just brilliant, voice acting is amazing, animations and gfx are amazing.

This would be what EA should have used as a template or example, though they didnt need an example, CD Projekt Red didnt.

EA care more about the money than the person paying the money...

@asneakypoptart: Drop whatever your doing and go get the Witcher 3! Fly you fools!!! It is a truly amazing video game experience. Literally go to the store buy a copy today and start playing tonight. It is one of the best games I have ever played. You need to play it. The quests and sidequests are so beautifully crafted and will raise your standard for story telling in a game. I played through the game and the DLC Twice on the hardest difficulty. Over 200 + hours of glory. You wont regret it.

Wow, finally. Someone who isn't making a big fuss over animations. Animations and glitches can be fixed easily, but the more worrisome thing IS bioware's obsession with bigger.

I recall an article where a dev for DA:I mentioned that Skyrim was an influence for that game. And I think that Inquisition had similar, severe problems as Andromeda: dialogue, meaningful choices, and interesting outcomes were sacrificed for the sake of "big."

Big, as you point out, is also bland and boring most of the time. Although KoToR or Dragon Age Origins were around 15-20 hours of gametime, I replayed those games about 4-5 times, excited to see how different choices would change my experience--and I was never let down.

This is the Bioware I fell in love with.

With Inquisition and Andromeda, I shudder to think of playing them through again; there's too much trekking towards menial tasks with little payback, and hardly any meaningful or rewarding choices to be made.

Thank you, Jess, for putting a highlight on this issue. I'm afraid that Bioware will continually chase towards this Bigger path and thus ruin what made them great to begin with. Im afraid they'll just chalk up Andromeda's rough launch to bugs and animation issues, but not to these vastly different changes to gameplay design and philosophy.

I don't play Bioware games for 100 hours of bland MMO-esque chores in a big zone, but rather for engaging conversations with unique characters and a plethora of meaningful decisions that impact my experience on each play through.

Please, share *this* with Bioware. I'm afraid they'll arbitrarily focus on making the next KoToR reboot BIG, and toss out all the things I once valued with it.

I got so bored of the game that I had to drag myself through the end. The ending is about as lackluster as it gets. The choices in the game don't matter.. Mass Effect, a series about choices, and in Andromeda none of them matter.. There were exactly two times in the whole game that I saw you could push "RT" during a cutscene, one was to hug Cora and the other was something I can't even remember. The game has no soul

Problem with feeling like a hero, was that in this game, you don't start off as one. You become one over time. Devs mentioned this before launch.

Shepard, on the other hand, started as a hero who later became a legend.

*spends six minutes lambasting Mass Effect Andromeda*

"please, don't misunderstand, I don't think it's a bad game."

Why does everyone do this? Can some one ever have the balls to just come out and say "This game isn't very good?" Because Mass Effect Andromeda IS a bad game.

@defiler: The difference between what Andromeda is and what a 4th Mass Effect game should have been is huge. Andromeda can be a FAIR game, a not very good game, a OKAY game and still be a massive disappointment to Mass Effect fans. But if you're comparing it to genuinely bad games, Andromeda has some enjoyable features.

@defiler: Have you ever had your favorite dish at a restaurant and it just wasn't up to par. It wasn't bad, most people would love it, but you're used to it being amazing and it just wasn't.

I'm personally tired of people calling a game a piece of garbage just because of one aspect of it. Some things can ruin peoples desire to play a game but trashing the whole game because of it is a bit childish. Yes game X's controls suck and that makes it tough to play. But what if literally everything else is amazing. Calling the whole game crap is not going to get the controls fixed.

Maybe that's part of the problem. The trilogy set a certain bar to meet and if the next game doesn't meet or exceed what the bar set, then they'll be upset.

@defiler: Rubbish. The game isn't bad, it just isn't as good as the first 3 games. I agree with everything Jess said (I am around mid way through the campaign and played plenty of the mp). Too much of the time I feel like I am pointlessly wandering around and that there is too much of a gap between battles that usually don't last long.

The story and characters are average and the removal of the morale system was a bad idea as I feared. It is probably the most disappointing game this gen.
