It generally comes down to 3 factors, the quality of the game itself, the total amount of available content, and the rate and quality of new content being introduced via patch (not including paid expansions). If an MMO can succeed in these three areas a subscription model is the best choice for the game. If one of these 3 are weak however the game will not be able to sustain itself with a subscription model.

I think if the fees were in the range of 5 dollars a month I could understand, but 15 a month is just crazy. Generally in MMO's, especially starting off, there is not enough content to ask for that amount of money.

@Gaimgenie Pretty much what I was going to say, the fees need to come way down. I don't know if that's feasible, I don't know the margins in the MMO business, but I think a lot more people would be willing to pay if the fees were much lower, like $5 or less.

Of course, as time goes on, if more and more MMOs keep going free to play, then more and more of the market will expect that. Maybe subscription fees will die out, but if those fees could be reduced enough it could at least keep it alive a lot longer.

zorine can teleport. she's a warlock.

on topic, i paid 60 bucks for GW2 and they never charged me another dime, and the game gets biweekly content drops. saying "pay 15 dollars every month to keep playing my game" is a huge turnoff for me.

@BrunoBRS Yeah, I don't understand why GW2 is the only big one that has been able to do this successfully. I'm sure there is a reason others don't follow, aside from greed. Well, I hope so anyway.

@drysprocket @BrunoBRS i honestly think that might be it. greed. because so much of the MMO community is used to paying monthly (hell, a large group defends the practice), they figure they can just get away with charging it. then the game fails to retain users, moves to a no-sub model, and keeps on running, despite not having the oh-so-necessary funding from subscriptions.

@BrunoBRS @drysprocket It has nothing to do with greed, i shouldnt have to explain this so do yourself a favor and compare ffxivs various major patches that have released since launch with the type of "content" GW2 provides..

@ThreeVo @BrunoBRS @drysprocket i've seen them. isn't the latest one the addition of realm VS realm, something GW2 had from launch?

i'd pick GW2 updates over FF XIV's any day, sorry.

@ThreeVo @BrunoBRS @drysprocket you're right, i'm sorry. liking a game is an objective thing. how dare i pretend i like GW2 better when FF XIV is factually the better game?

@BrunoBRS @ThreeVo @drysprocket oh by all means you can like whatever you want, what is not subjective is that GW2s updates are less robust and full as compared to XIVs

@ThreeVo @BrunoBRS @drysprocket i'll take quality over quantity, thank you, and so far GW2's updates in 2014 have all been of really high quality. and since quality is subjective, i get to say that i find GW2's updates better than FF XIV's.

now excuse me, i have a certain game to go back to.

@BrunoBRS I agree. That was the problem for me with ESO. I'm not in control. Of my game. The one that they want me to buy and then pay more to have access to. My game. Then I have to play in their schedule not mine. But, it's an extremely boring, buggy, unfinished game so I'm not missing out on anything.

@Shielder7 They basically have a model that punishes early adopters. Fans of the game will insist that Zenimax is improving the game & will continue adding content. As an early adopter, they are basically funding a bad game in the hope that it will be better in the future. As a consumer you are actually better off if you jump in a couple of years down the line once improvements have been made & more content is available.

It's pretty ridiculous how games like ESO can charge full price for entry & then continually charging you to play the game. For $15 a month on Steam, I could play so many different games with so many different experiences, play styles, stories, genres, mechanics etc. I don't care how much additional content anyone's favourite MMO is giving them, I bet they could get a lot more value putting that budget to Steam, GOG or any other PC storefront.
