Grabbed this title a few nights ago, let it download, then fired it right up to check it out.
The first thing to say is this: it is very much like Left4Dead but in 3rd person, which is a game series I thoroughly enjoyed, and I'll be comparing it to that series often here.
I haven't finished it, but I've put several hours into it and feel I can give a fair and concise impressions write-up.
GAMEPLAY: Gameplay is usually king for me, so if a game has a crappy gameplay loop, it doesn't matter how fast or pretty it runs, it gets the boot. Thankfully, WWZ sticks very close to the L4D formula— up to 4 players take on episodic levels with waves of zombies attacking while they perform "defend this spot" or "find this item" tasks. The gunplay is competent, though the 3rd person view makes it a little more sluggish than L4D. The gun selection is comparable with a couple of fun Special weapons, like the crossbow or a rocket launcher. Teammates and interactive items glow (even through objects) similar to L4D, and the enemy archetypes are almost identical to the ones seen in L4D (normal, hunters, screamers, brutes, etc.)
Playing online with randoms was easy to find a lobby and worked perfectly fine.
GRAPHICS: The graphics are better than L4D, which is to be expected since it's newer and made for current gen consoles. Frame rates dipped and sound stuttered from time to time, which was disappointing playing on an XBox One X with a fast connection speed.
PROGRESSION: There isn't really a compelling story to keep you pushing through missions, but there's a basic progression system that lets you improve your gear loadouts or class depending on XP earned from playing (and with certain weapons / talents equipped). It's intriguing at first but not enough to keep you playing if you don't really enjoy the moment-to-moment gameplay.
OVERALL: It's a pretty good co-op zombie game and definitely scratches the itch for L4D fans like me who are waiting for Valve's next installment. I'd give it a 6/10 for the average gamer, maybe a little higher if killin' zombies is your main flame. Worth the current $40 price tag? Probably not, I'd wait til it dropped another $10-$20 if you're nervous about this one.
